Storytelling: A Guide For The Novice Storyteller, Phyllis Gray
Graduate Research Papers
"Once upon a time, in a place long ago." Thus begins many of the stories that have delighted children and adults all over the world. These words are signals that let people know they are about to enter a world of enchantment. Having entered this strange and wonderful world, people are enthralled or horrified by the sights and sounds that they find there. No matter what the listeners' initial feelings, they are always willing to return to a place long ago with the help of a storyteller. In order to get a better understanding of storytelling events and to improve …
Bosom Buddies And Lonely Hearts, Daryl Cumber Dance
Bosom Buddies And Lonely Hearts, Daryl Cumber Dance
English Faculty Publications
In Ossie Davis' Purlie Victorius, Ol' Cap'n nostalgically reminisces about the good old days when he enjoyed what he recollects as close loving relationships with Blacks. He recalls to Gitlow "how you and me growed up together. Had the same mammy - my mammy was your mother." And Gitlow responds, "Yessir! Bosom buddies." Despite the satire and irony with which Ossie Davis consciously invests this scene, it suggest to me another irony - one which Davis certainly did not intend - and that is that one of the images of the Black woman which has frequently been shared by …

The Ghostway Manuscripts
This appears to be an early typed draft of The Ghostway and could possibly be the first draft due to the apparent difference of word processing between chapters. The editing is very light and mostly is notes from the author in places where he feels that he should explain details in greater depth.

Time In John Cheever's The Housebreaker Of Shady Hill, Charles M. Elliott
Time In John Cheever's The Housebreaker Of Shady Hill, Charles M. Elliott
Masters Theses
The problem of time is a central concern in John Cheever's short story collection The Housebreaker of Shady Hill. The characters in these stories--upper-middle class suburbanites--live in a sometimes chaotic and disconnected world in which they find it difficult to attain some sense of continuity in their relationships with time. In trying to come to grips with their time and space, many of Cheever's characters express an immoderate devotion to their past, present, or future and neglect to see the bits and pieces of their experiences as interrelated. The characters who are happy and whole in these stories, however, …
"Training" And Twain's Discovery Of Its Role In His Major Novels, Gary Dale Ervin
"Training" And Twain's Discovery Of Its Role In His Major Novels, Gary Dale Ervin
Masters Theses
Twain's career as a novelist began with The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Before that time he wrote pieces for newspapers and magazines and short stories. The success of Tom Sawyer inspired Twain to write further novels. The Adventures of Huckelberry Finn took seven years to compose, During that time, Twain was forced to face several pitfalls that often confront a writer. One of those pitfalls was a concept he called "training."
The training of an individual in effect is the raising of that individual--the instillation of values and beliefs in a person as he is raised. The process applies …

Why Write Fantasy? A Mythopoeic Conference Xiv Panel, Robert Cowan, Marion Z. Bradley, Diana Paxson, Stephen Donaldson, Evangaline Walton, Paul Zimmer
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
The purpose of this panel is to examine some of the underlying reasons why Fantasy literature is written and why it is worth writing. Many of us, probably most of us, as readers of Fantasy, have been tempted to try our own hand at writing Fantasy at one time or another. The panelists here today will hopefully be able to give us some direction for those story ideas we feel we must try to get down on paper. Our honored guests are Marion Zimmer Bradley, author of the Darkover series and the Mists of Avalon; Diana Paxon, author of …

Real People Tell The Whole Story: Dialogue And Characterization In Malory's Morte Darthur, Anne Woehrle
Real People Tell The Whole Story: Dialogue And Characterization In Malory's Morte Darthur, Anne Woehrle
Honors Papers
Ever since Eugene Vinaver published his edition of the of Sir Thomas Malory (generally known by the title apparently given it by its first publisher, William Caxton), critics have disputed the interpretation that governed his editing. Vinaver based his edition on the "Winchester Manuscript," discovered in 1934, contending that Morte Darthur was written as a series of eight separate "tales" and has therefore nothing that resembles the comprehensive structure of a novel, a play. or even a simple romance. He based his argument on features of the manuscript, such as explcits and decorated letters marking tale divisions, and on inconsistencies …
