Thomas Hornsby Ferril, 1896-1988, was a major figure in literary circles of the American West for nearly half a century. Winner of the 1926 Yale Younger Poets award for High Passage, and honored by such poets as Carl Sandburg and Robert Frost, Ferril created poetry that is musical, metrical, and meant to be read aloud. Westering was Ferril’s second collection of poetry, originally published by Yale University Press in 1934 and reprinted by Ahsahta in 1986. Ahsahta Press also brought out Ferril’s 1983 book Anvil of Roses, his sixth and final book of poems.
In Search Of Humanity, William Rewak
In Search Of Humanity, William Rewak

What is it that unifies our common enterprise here at Santa Clara? What makes it a common enterprise? We live in a pluralistic society and such a question is therefore hard to respond to with any assurance. Any attempt at unity is difficult: we've been struggling with it at least since Plato first tried to figure out how the many and varied aspects of reality proceeded from one source.
But I think it's a good question, and we ought always to be searching for the answer. There are, of course, various ways of answering it. We can talk about the …
Responses To Charles Kingsley’S Attack On Political Economy., John C. Hawley
Responses To Charles Kingsley’S Attack On Political Economy., John C. Hawley
English
In 1850, Charles Kingsley lightheartedly told a friend that "The 'Christian Socialist' sells about 1500, and is spreading; but not having been yet cursed by any periodical, I fear it is doing no good."(l) Writing under the pseudonym 'Parson Lot," this young enthusiast did not have much longer to wait for that token of "success." Just two years later, in his defensive Who Are the Friends of Order? Kingsley acknowledged that the Christian Socialists were now besieged on all sides, and had "to hear Edinburgh Reviewers complaining of them for wishing to return to feudalism and medieval bigotry while Quarterly …

A Study Of The Relationship Of Three Different Oral Revision Activities And Expository Rewriting, Terryl Friberg Anderson
A Study Of The Relationship Of Three Different Oral Revision Activities And Expository Rewriting, Terryl Friberg Anderson
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
As theorists and instructors of written composition come to understand writing as more than a product of putting thoughts on slate, paper, or screen, oral revision techniques such as student-teacher conferences and peer editing groups are increasingly being used during the process of composing. Recent reports indicate use of these and other speaking activities in the writing classroom, as pre-writing procedures and as revision techniques, for example. Yet, the call continues for more research in both the teaching of written composition and in speaking/writing relationships. This research was designed to determine the effects of using three different oral revision techniques--peer …
[Introduction To] Fifty Caribbean Writers: A Bio-Bibliographical And Critical Sourcebook, Daryl Cumber Dance
[Introduction To] Fifty Caribbean Writers: A Bio-Bibliographical And Critical Sourcebook, Daryl Cumber Dance
Bookshelf
The beginnings of Caribbean literature lie hidden In the folklore of the plantation era and in the prim, condescending travelogues, the exotic novels, and the apparently naive slave narratives - often authored by Whites - that began to appear as early as the eighteenth century. Francis Williams, the classically educated Black poet of 18th century Jamaica, used conventional Augustan poetics to protest racism and assert the common humanity of mankind. The vision draws from Caribbean life. By the 19th century some black poets began to write of their own concerns and experiences, some writing in the local vernacular.
The essays …
“The Greatest Human Travail”: Faith And The Context Of Rhetoric In Zora Neale Hurston’S Dust Tracks On A Road, James Cameron Hall
“The Greatest Human Travail”: Faith And The Context Of Rhetoric In Zora Neale Hurston’S Dust Tracks On A Road, James Cameron Hall
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Zora Neale Hurston was a controversial in the Harlem Renaissance. Her little studied autobiography could be helpful in resolving many of the unanswered questions. However, critical responses have mostly been negative. Critics have questions her portrayal of social reality, particularly black/white relations. If the autobiography is examined in terms of the internal dynamics of the Harlem Renaissance and the political situation of blacks during the Second World War, with special attention paid to the development of Hurston’s religious faith, a different interpretation is possible.
This thesis examines Dust Tracks on a Road as Hurston’s apologia, an autobiographical defense of faith. …
Four Voices Of Pound In Cantos I-Xvii, Malcolm D. Childress
Four Voices Of Pound In Cantos I-Xvii, Malcolm D. Childress
Honors Papers
Between 1922 and 1924, Ezra Pound completed the first sixteen Cantos. He had published three Cantos in 1917, but suspended work on them shortly thereafter. It was not until 1922, after he had moved to Paris that he resumed work on the Cantos, piecing together what now stand as the first sixteen by the summer of 1924. This places the creation of Cantos I-XVI at the same time as the writing of Ulysses and "The Wasteland." Cantos XVII-XXVII were published in 1929. In July of 1922 Pound wrote of the first Cantos in a letter: "The first 11 cantos are …
Visionary Excitability And George Eliot: Judeo-Mythic Narrative Technique In Daniel Deronda, Barbara Stufflebeem
Visionary Excitability And George Eliot: Judeo-Mythic Narrative Technique In Daniel Deronda, Barbara Stufflebeem
Honors Papers
Readers of Daniel Deronda have long noted the tension in the novel between the so-called "Jewish" and "English" halves, and understandably so. Not only are the lives of Gwendolen's carefully drawn psychological portrait contrasts strongly with the air of myth and prophecy in Deronda's discovery of his heritage and destiny. Critics, following Leavis in The Great Tradition, have considered Deronda's story vastly inferior to Gwendolen's, an unbelievable moral fairy-tale peopled with flat characters. But if we consider the novel, ans the Deronda story especially, as constructed with an awareness of a characteristically Judaic narrative style we can see both as …
