The Ethnographic Component In Chicano/A Literary Discourse, Hector A. Torres Jan 1990

The Ethnographic Component In Chicano/A Literary Discourse, Hector A. Torres

English Language and Literature Faculty Publications

Postmodern ethnography is the model of the Humanities I trace in order interrelate the inheritance of the erasure mark by contemporary Chicana and Chicano writers. These writers write under erasure because they are aware that too much politics can spoil the story but so can not enough aesthetics. Steering between the exigencies of politics and aesthetics, these contemporary writers are producing a literary discourse that contests Anglo America's narrow understanding of the Chicano/a experience: its attempts to distance itself from the socioeconomic and linguistic reality the Chicano/a experience presents and represents to it, not to mention its historical complicity in …

Genre, Gender, And Mestizaje: The Politics Of Aesthetics In The Work Of Gloria Anzaldúa, Hector A. Torres Jan 1990

Genre, Gender, And Mestizaje: The Politics Of Aesthetics In The Work Of Gloria Anzaldúa, Hector A. Torres

English Language and Literature Faculty Publications

I take mestizaje as my point of departure for this critical study of Anzaldua's literary production. Through this ideological practice she calls mestizaje or mestiza consciousness, Anzaldua pens a body of work that negotiates the question mark punctuating the politics of identity in multicultural America at least since the political activism of the 1960s.

Mestiza Consciousness And Dialect(Ic)S: Gloria Anzaldúa's Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza, Hector A. Torres Jan 1990

Mestiza Consciousness And Dialect(Ic)S: Gloria Anzaldúa's Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza, Hector A. Torres

English Language and Literature Faculty Publications

As represented in Borderlands, the dialectics of Mestiza consciousness contest the promise of security offered by the Western prescription that a term, proposition, or state of affairs must be either true or false, that it cannot be both simultaneously, or that once it holds one value it cannot carry the other. Here, it is worth noting that the premise of the challenge is not that identity and non-contradiction are not useful but that they are too narrow to account for the diversity and heterogeneity of human life experience. From such a point of view, the Western logos is not …

The Other Of The Other: Topology And The Ideogrammatics Of American Imperial Practice, Hector A. Torres Jan 1990

The Other Of The Other: Topology And The Ideogrammatics Of American Imperial Practice, Hector A. Torres

English Language and Literature Faculty Publications

In this essay I trace what I will here call a cultural pathology in American history and historiography. This cultural pathology certainly stems from the Puritan dilemma of colonial, but it might also be said to have no unique location or site of origin. Rather than locate a unique site of origin for this cultural pathology in any period of American history, I shall argue for its location in the subject of discourse. If Hardt and Negri are right when they claim in Empire (2000) that the United States begins to practice a new mode of political sovereignty after the …

Syntactic Change From Old Into Middle English With Special Reference To Ancrene Wisse, Hector A. Torres Jan 1990

Syntactic Change From Old Into Middle English With Special Reference To Ancrene Wisse, Hector A. Torres

English Language and Literature Faculty Publications

In the introduction to their Early Middle English Verse and Prose, Bennett and Smithers make the point that: "To distinguish and characterize the local varieties of English (spoken or written) is not the be-all and end-all of ME studies. It is more important to ascertain the major structural characteristicsof the main varieties of ME, and to understand how and why these characteristics came into being" (emphasis added, 1968, xxiii) .

Since even by the ninth century Old English already alternated between SOV and SVO word order patterns (Bright 93), their point raises at least a couple of questions: (i) …

Disturbances, Elio Emiliano Ligi Jan 1990

Disturbances, Elio Emiliano Ligi

Ahsahta Press

Raw language and a sense of reality, at times disturbing, set the tone for Ligi’s Disturbances. Paul Fericano says, “his poetry is likely to be noted for a certain special riff, an extra glide, a kick where none is expected, and a beat for which there is no notation.” In the early Sixties Ligi’s work attracted the attention of poets such as Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and perhaps it was for what you’ll find on these pages—poems ready to jump forward and reveal, unveil, surprise and sometimes shock.

Milton And The Fascists, David Boocker Jan 1990

Milton And The Fascists, David Boocker

ln August 1925 the Italians placed a memorial tablet honoring Milton on the wall of the Paradisino at Vallombrosa, where he is said to have stayed during his tour of ltaly. Actual evidence that Milton was at Vallombrosa is scant; all we really have are lines 302-4 of Book I of Paradise Lost. Nevertheless, the Italians did place the memorial tablet in his honor. The question is why.

"Dark Lady And Fair Man": The Love Triangle In Shakespeare's Sonnets And Ulysses, Michelle Burnham Jan 1990

"Dark Lady And Fair Man": The Love Triangle In Shakespeare's Sonnets And Ulysses, Michelle Burnham

English

The article discusses the novel "Ulysses" by the Irish author James Joyce, and argues that he used sonnets by the dramatist and poet William Shakespeare suggesting love triangles between the poet, a dark lady, and a young man as a model for the love triangle between the characters Leopold Bloom, Molly Bloom, and Blazes Boylan. Joyce's interest in adultery as a literary theme is also touched on.

Use Of Storytelling By Iowa Elementary Library Media Specialists, Frances E. Lachance Jan 1990

Use Of Storytelling By Iowa Elementary Library Media Specialists, Frances E. Lachance

Graduate Research Papers

Seventy-five percent of 41 randomly selected Iowa public school library media specialists who answered a storytelling questionnaire in November, 1990, indicated that they used one or more storytelling activities with students in grades prekindergarten to six. Eleven of the 12 storytelling activities were used more with students in grades three or below than they were with students in grades four to six. Just 22% of the library media specialists indicated that they taught students to do storytelling, and this activity was done about equally with upper and lower elementary students.

Seventy-three percent of these library media specialists had participated in …

Gender And The Search For Identity In Gwendolyn Macewan’S Julian And Noman Stories, Anne Marie Martin Jan 1990

Gender And The Search For Identity In Gwendolyn Macewan’S Julian And Noman Stories, Anne Marie Martin

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis looks at the theme of gender and the search for identity in three fictional works of Canadian poet and novelist Gwendolyn MacEwen. The works considered are her first novel Julian the Magician (1963) and her two collections of short stories Noman (1972) and Noman’s Land (1985).

The thesis examines the way self-identity is characterized and considers the way gender is presented in relation to the self. The work shows the development of MacEwen’s idea of self from a creative eternal force equivalent to the Christ image in Julian the Magician to an eternal force that finds its expression …

Frowning Babe Or Brightening Glance? Blake And Yeats's Particular Uses Of Metaphor, Daniel Muir Jan 1990

Frowning Babe Or Brightening Glance? Blake And Yeats's Particular Uses Of Metaphor, Daniel Muir

Honors Papers

The first significant evidence of Blake's influence on Yeats was the three volume edition of Blake's works published by Bernard Quarich and edited by Richard Ellis and W. B. Yeats in 1893. Within the history of Blakean criticism, the volume is unique. It is the product of Ellis and Yeats's occult viewpoints combined with enthusiastic but imperfect scholarship. The first two interpretative volumes of the edition, entitled "The System" and "The Meaning," include extreme restatements of other nineteenth-century interpretations, as well as several disposable ideas that reveal more about the editors' viewpoints than Blake's own. Among the most outlandish is …

Gravity's Rainbow: Modernist Discourse Vineland: Postmodernist Discourse, Ted Mouw Jan 1990

Gravity's Rainbow: Modernist Discourse Vineland: Postmodernist Discourse, Ted Mouw

Honors Papers

To locate Gravity's Rainbow as a postmodern text within modernist discourse is probably sort of an odd thing. Obviously, the books' thematic depictions of linguistic colonialism and discourse of control (capitalism), suggest the inscription of power relations into formulations of truth and rationality, and a postmodern analysis of discursive operations and hierarchies. Yet, I want to stress here the ways in which we have been oriented to access and reproduce the text through modernist discourse.

"As If She Had No Secrets": Approach, Recognition, And Coming Of Age In Alice Munro's Lives Of Girls And Women, Catherine Laura Sweeney Jan 1990

"As If She Had No Secrets": Approach, Recognition, And Coming Of Age In Alice Munro's Lives Of Girls And Women, Catherine Laura Sweeney

Honors Papers

Munro's fiction contains these two elements at odds, in tension with one another, but they are, for her characters, part of the same process of reckoning with the world. Munro's protagonists, once inside the deep cave, find the familiar linoleum--and the cave itself becomes more mysterious because of this paradoxical discovery. Meanwhile, Munro herself seems to go through a similar process in the act of writing. Her likening of art to a pattern of approach and recognition is applicable to her work, and perhaps, to the work of many writers. Writers go into secret places, hoping to come out with …

The Fiction Of Truth: Intergenerational Conflict In The Life And Works Of Flannery O'Connor, Elizabeth Reed Jan 1990

The Fiction Of Truth: Intergenerational Conflict In The Life And Works Of Flannery O'Connor, Elizabeth Reed

Honors Papers

Aside from the fact that most of Flannery O'Connor's works are set in the South where she lived nearly her entire life, her idiosyncratic characters and the consistently horrifying fates that they meet could not seem further removed from the widely accepted image of the author herself.l This image, instigated by her loved ones and perpetuated by critics, is of a witty, intelligent, and above all else devout Catholic who was stoic in the face of a crippling disease that cut her life short. Despite the limits placed upon her by illness. O'Connor is described as having been socially receptive …
