"The Bride Of His Country": Love, Marriage, And The Imperialist Paradox In The Indian Fiction Of Sara Jeannette Duncan And Rudyard Kipling, Teresa Hubel
Department of English Publications
Introduction:
For many literary scholars and general readers, the expression 'Kipling's India' neatly delineates the imperialist society that existed on the Indian subcontinent in the late nineteenth century. The phrase, however, is deceptive in its simplicity. It does not reveal, or even imply, the internal workings behind what is certainly a vast imaginative construct, a construct that involves a specific political ideology, various cultural myths, and an extraordinary emotional investment. In the words of one critic, Kipling was "a mythmaker for a culture under protracted stress" (Wurgaft xx). He voiced the bewilderment and memorialized the tragic — and sometimes pathetic …

The Image Of The Adolescent Girl In Recommended Romantic Fiction For Young Adults, 1979-1989, Judy Elaine Mcclure
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this content analysis was to investigate how realistically novelists portrayed the image of the teenage girl in fiction written for young adults. The researcher analyzed twenty-two books with copyrights from 1979 to 1989, novels identified in Booklist which had one additional review and were. still in print at the time of the study. A checklist adapted from Offer's Self-Image Questionnaire was used in analyzing the psychological self, social self, sexual self, familial self, and coping self.
With the use of the checklist the following hypotheses were accepted:
1. The majority of the romantic fiction of the 1980's …
For A Sociolinguistics Of Literature: The Question Of Style, Hector A. Torres
For A Sociolinguistics Of Literature: The Question Of Style, Hector A. Torres

It is neither my intent in this essay to deconstruct the internal-external distinction so central to generative grammar nor to favor one side of the debate over the other, since in fact I want to favor both sides. My objective is to explore Jacques Derrida' s insistence that the concept of the event be placed in the gap of the competence/performance distinction (Linguistics 53). The event, as Derrida calls it in philosophical language, is the moment of utterance in an exchange between interactants, the content of the illocutions, the illocutionary forces that affect and modify these illocutions, the interactions …

Part 1 of the book Approaches to Teaching the Metaphysical Poets, edited by Sidney Gottlieb. The chapter is not an attempt to settle the implicit argument between those who (in the words of one colleague) "most certainly do not believe in using an anthology of seventeenth-century poetry" and those who, for one reason or another, choose to use an anthology. Nor is what follows a comprehensive list of all available editions and anthologies or a fully developed critical review of them. It is, rather, a brief description of those texts mentioned by respondents, including enough information to help …

Realistic Depiction Of Symptoms And Consequences Of Parental Problem Drinking In Young Adult Novels, Teresa A. Bunday
Graduate Research Papers
This research was a content analysis study of young adult novels that contained a parent with a drinking problem. The researcher wanted to determine the level of real ism regarding the characterizations of the child of an alcoholic, the drinker, and the spouse of the drinker. The hypothese predicted that a majority of the books would include: 1. three or more consequence of drinking on the child, 2. four or more consequences or symptoms on the drinker, and 3. one or more consequences suffered by the spouse. A checklist that listed known consequences and symptoms of alcohol abuse was developed. …
