The Pursuit Of Fulfilment: Desire In Peter Carey's Illywhacker, Jonas Byford Jan 1992

The Pursuit Of Fulfilment: Desire In Peter Carey's Illywhacker, Jonas Byford

Theses : Honours

This paper is a close textual analysis exploring the different levels at which desire is manifest in Peter Carey's lllywhacker. It attempts to show how desire, and the expectation of its fulfilment, have the effect of propelling the narrative and implicating the reader in the text. It is also the aim of the paper to argue that, despite aU Ilfywhacker's gestures to the contrary. and its expectation of fulfilment, at no level is this desire realized in the novel. It should be stated that this is not an evaluative judgement...

The Portrayal Of Interracial Families In Children’S And Young Adult Fiction Books, Judy Mitchell Jan 1992

The Portrayal Of Interracial Families In Children’S And Young Adult Fiction Books, Judy Mitchell

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of the study was to analyze the content of children's and young adult fiction books which portray contemporary interracial families. A checklist was prepared to address how the structures of these families are being presented. Three hypotheses were rejected. The first hypothesis stated that the majority of the interracial families portrayed would include on African American and one caucasian parent. The data showed that only forty-one percent of the families fit that criterion. The third hypothesis stated that the majority of interracial families would encourage their children to accept both sides of their heritage. The data, however, showed …

Categorizing Professional Discourse: Engineering, Administrative, And Technical/Professional Writing, Barbara Couture Jan 1992

Categorizing Professional Discourse: Engineering, Administrative, And Technical/Professional Writing, Barbara Couture

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Rhetorical categories can and should be developed by scholars of professional writing to identify how values held within professions constrain the ways discourse is interpreted in organizational settings. Empirical research (conducted by the author and others), discourse theory, and pedagogical practice in professional writing strongly suggest that at least three categories of professional writing exist: engineering, administrative, and technical/professional writing. The author demonstrates this claim and distinguishes the characteristics of these three categories. Engineering writing is shown to respond to professional values of scientific objectivity and professional judgment as well as to corporate interests. Administrative writing reflects the locus of …

Expectations As Character Development In Chaucer's Clerk's Tale, Kevin Gorham Jan 1992

Expectations As Character Development In Chaucer's Clerk's Tale, Kevin Gorham

Masters Theses

The Clerk of Oxenford in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales is often maligned for lacking development as a literary character. Frequently, the Clerk has been dismissed as a stereotype or an ideal rather than a multi-dimensional character. The Clerk's character, much like the meaning of his tale, is concealed from the reader and veiled behind expectations.

Chaucer manipulates readers by exploiting expectations associated with fourteenth century clerks. These expectations derive from historical and literary stereotypes which constitute the General Prologue portrait of the Clerk. Because Chaucer's description of the Clerk is populated with stereotypes, the reader expects the Clerk to tell a …

Chaucer's "Nether Ye": A Study Of Chaucer's Use Of Scatology In The Canterbury Tales, Brook Wilson Jan 1992

Chaucer's "Nether Ye": A Study Of Chaucer's Use Of Scatology In The Canterbury Tales, Brook Wilson

Masters Theses

Chaucer's use of scatology throughout the Canterbury Tales offers a new frontier for Chaucerian research. To this date, no book-length work dealing exclusively with the scatological elements found in his works exists. Too often, the serious and artistic effects of scatology become lost in the great comedy the device generates. Furthermore, many readers and scholars seem to find themselves somewhat "squaymous" when confronted with the "nether ye" of Chaucer. While Chaucer employs scatology perhaps less frequently than Swift or Rabelais, his mastery of this device remains unquestionable.

Recognizing that the uses for scatology extend far beyond creating humor, Chaucer instead …

Tolkien's Unnamed Deity Orchestrating The Lord Of The Rings, Lisa Hillis Jan 1992

Tolkien's Unnamed Deity Orchestrating The Lord Of The Rings, Lisa Hillis

Masters Theses

The epic world created by J.R.R. Tolkien in the Lord of the Rings trilogy is one in which secular and religious elements are intertwined and the relationship between the two is intentionally kept vague. Within this created world, known as Middle Earth, good and evil are apparent, but the standard by which they are determined remains undefined. The free creatures living in Tolkien's world appear to have an intuitive ability to discern between good and evil, and each being generally exercises its free will in pursuit of one or the other though some personalities do combine the qualities. This innate …

Rhetoric In Fiction: A Fantasy-Theme Analysis Of Conrad’S Heart Of Darkness, Thomas S. Caldwell Jan 1992

Rhetoric In Fiction: A Fantasy-Theme Analysis Of Conrad’S Heart Of Darkness, Thomas S. Caldwell

Masters Theses

This study meets three primary objectives.

First, it demonstrates how rhetorical theory and Iiterary criticism are compatible fields of study and explains how Ernest Bormann's rhetorical theory based on "fantasy-theme analysis" can be used as an appropriate method for the analysis of literary works.

Secondly, this study identifies a trend in late Nineteenth Century "adventure stories" in which travel to foreign lands and European influence on the cultures of those lands is portrayed as "good" and "philanthropic."

Finally, this study concludes with a fantasy-theme analysis of Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness which reveals that Conrad's adventure fiction breaks away from …

The Portrayal Of Characters With Behavior Disorders In Fiction Books For Upper Elementary Children, Sue Pedersen Jan 1992

The Portrayal Of Characters With Behavior Disorders In Fiction Books For Upper Elementary Children, Sue Pedersen

Graduate Research Papers

Our society perceives childhood as a time when children are happy and carefree, learning and growing. For many children, however, childhood is not carefree. In the national school population, 1.2 to 2.0 percent of the students are behavior disordered (Haring, 1987). "Behavior disorders" is used as a term rather than "emotional disabilities" because the State of Iowa has mandated the use of the former term.

This research focuses on the ways in which children's literature portrays the behavior-disordered child. Books with accurate descriptions of the behavior-disordered condition in children help adults and other children understand the disorders.

Error Patterns In Research Papers By Pacific Kim Students, Chris Crowe Jan 1992

Error Patterns In Research Papers By Pacific Kim Students, Chris Crowe

Faculty Publications

By looking for patterns of errors in the research papers of Asian students, educators can uncover pedagogical strategies to help students avoid repeating such errors. While a good deal of research has identified a number of sentence-level problems which are typical of Asian students writing in English, little attempt has been made to consider the specific problems which a long research paper presents. Of these problems, Asian students have the most difficulty integrating sources from research and developing transition, unity, and cohesion. These problems stem not necessarily from different thought patterns or primary language interference, but from the challenge of …

[Introduction To] New World Adams: Conversations With Contemporary West Indian Writers, Daryl Cumber Dance Jan 1992

[Introduction To] New World Adams: Conversations With Contemporary West Indian Writers, Daryl Cumber Dance

Bookshelf

In these interviews, held in the early 1980s, with twenty-two of the major writers of the English-speaking Caribbean, Daryl Dance brings together what is much more than just a valuable source book for readers of West Indian writing. The interviews are highly readable - by turns probing, combative and reflective and always absorbing. Daryl Dance brings to the interviews a rare breadth of knowledge and empathy with the work of the writers interviewed and the openly avowed insights of an African-American woman.

The writers interviewed include Michael Anthony, Louise Bennett, Jan Carew, Martin Carter and Denis Williams, Austin Clarke, Wilson …

Burning Beauty: Violence And Splendor In The Writing Of Annie Dillard, Frederick David Hucke Jan 1992

Burning Beauty: Violence And Splendor In The Writing Of Annie Dillard, Frederick David Hucke

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

After reviewing the criticism on Pulitzer Prize winning American author Annie Dillard's writing, I offer a close analysis of the imagery in these of Dillard's early works: Pilgrim at Tinker Creek (1974), Holy the Firm (1977), and Teaching a Stone to Talk (1982). The analysis reveals how Dillard employs oppositions to expose the contradictions inherent in nature and, therefore, in God. Each of the three chapters covers one volume. In Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, Dillard's spiritual quest manifests itself in a study of nature. For Dillard, learning to see requires being prepared for visions of violence and horror as well …

Tied To Tradition: The Silenced Rage Of The African Woman In Selected Novels Of Buchi Emechata, Marie Giselle Martine Raphael Jan 1992

Tied To Tradition: The Silenced Rage Of The African Woman In Selected Novels Of Buchi Emechata, Marie Giselle Martine Raphael

Theses : Honours

In addressing the myths of past and present social and familial structures and hierarchies. Post-Colonial Literatures are forced to confront complex assertions of identity, evolved through an inheritance shaped by both traditional and foreign influence. In a study of Buchi Emecheta' s novels, The Slave Girl, The Joys of Motherhood and Second Class Citizen, a tension is thus seen to emerge within the African heroine, between “her communally bred sense of herself as an African, and her feminist aspirations for autonomy and self-realization as a woman" (Frank, 1987, 45). Though the female protagonists of these narratives are placed within different …
