The Allegorical And Symbolic Modes Of Representation In W. Wordsworth's Poems Of The Fancy And Poems Of The Imagination, Irena Nikolova Nikolova Jan 1993

The Allegorical And Symbolic Modes Of Representation In W. Wordsworth's Poems Of The Fancy And Poems Of The Imagination, Irena Nikolova Nikolova

Masters Theses

The present study focuses on the controversial issue concerning the differentiation of Fancy and Imagination in the context of S. T. Coleridge's and W. Wordsworth's Romantic aesthetics. Wordsworth's theoretical and poetic discourses lead to an indeterminacy in the attempts to distinguish between the "lower" poetic faculty of Fancy and the "higher" poetic faculty of the Imagination. The present investigation proceeds from the assumption that the two poetic modes can only be defined accurately as complementary rather than distinct. They engender an unstable perspective upon the external world which allows for transmutations of the visible into the visionary, of the act …

The Journey Between: Liminality And Dialogism In Mary White Rowlandson’S Captivity Narrative, Michelle Burnham Jan 1993

The Journey Between: Liminality And Dialogism In Mary White Rowlandson’S Captivity Narrative, Michelle Burnham

English

In the introductory segment of her captivity narrative, before the story becomes structured into a series of "removes," Mary Rowlandson succinctly states her purpose: "that I may the better declare what happened to me during that grievous Captivity" (121). Throughout the succeeding twenty removes, this middle-aged Puritan woman-the wife of a minister and the daughter of the wealthiest original landowner in Lancaster, Massachusetts- records her experience during the eleven weeks and five days she spent as a captive among the New England Indians. Her narrative begins with the extraordinarily violent Indian attack on her home, a scene she describes with …

Gerard Manley Hopkins And The Christian Imagination, John C. Hawley Jan 1993

Gerard Manley Hopkins And The Christian Imagination, John C. Hawley

English

The role of poets is to get their anchors caught in many such monasteries, to shimmy down the entangling ropes, and then to record the marvelous resistance that caused them to stop in the first place to notice. But those in the monastery, putting in their time, must not too quickly conclude that such accidental tourists, dropped from some ethereal realm, are likely to drown if we do not distance them from the world we consider mundane. In both situations, that of the sailor and that of the abbot, the question of how we envision reality, of what our shaping …

Turning Wine Into Water: Water As Privileged Signifier In The Grapes Of Wrath, David N. Cassuto Jan 1993

Turning Wine Into Water: Water As Privileged Signifier In The Grapes Of Wrath, David N. Cassuto

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

I will argue that The Grapes of Wrath represents an indictment of the American myth of the garden and its accompanying myth of the frontier. The lever with which Steinbeck pries apart and ultimately dismantles these fictions is a critique of the agricultural practices that created the Dust Bowl and then metamorphosed into a new set of norms which continued to victimize both the land and its inhabitants. Both nineteenth-century homesteading (based on the Homestead Act of 1862) and agribusiness, its twentieth century descendant (born from the failure of the Homestead Act), relied on the (mis)use of water to accomplish …

Review Of Shelley’S Goddess: Maternity, Language And Subjectivity By Barbara Charlesworth Gelpi, Diane Hoeveler Jan 1993

Review Of Shelley’S Goddess: Maternity, Language And Subjectivity By Barbara Charlesworth Gelpi, Diane Hoeveler

English Faculty Research and Publications

When the hero of Ferdinand von Loeben's 1 808 novel Guido sees a sample of handwriting in Sanskrit he remarks, "languages have always seemed to me to be lost holy children who cover the whole world in search of their mother" (p. 62). Guido's observation could stand as a paraphrase of Percy Shelley's lifelong interest in language, mediated as it was by his equally compelling obsessions with maternity and subjectivity. And we are fortunate to have these three concerns brought together by Barbara Gelpi's Shelley's Goddess.

The Muses And Creative Inspiration: Homer To Milton, Kathleen Potthoff Mchugh Jan 1993

The Muses And Creative Inspiration: Homer To Milton, Kathleen Potthoff Mchugh

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Tracing the influences and references to the Muses in written language from Ancient Greece through the end of the English Renaissance, I discover transformations and revivals in their usage. There are shifts from dependence on deified inspiration to the development of personal insight. Also, there appears to be a conscious substituting of the Muses with the beloved and Cupid or Apollo. But the Muses' religious significance returns in Paradise Lost.

The first part of this thesis focuses on the early Greek writers: Homer, Hesiod, Pindar, Plato, and the Latin writers: Ovid, Virgil, Boethius. The second part addresses the English poetic …

07. Sacred Clowns: First Complete, Edited Draft (Titled: "The Death Of Valuable Men)., Tony Hillerman

Sacred Clowns Manuscripts

This is the first complete and edited draft of Sacred Clowns. At the time of this draft the title for this novel was "The Death of Valuable Men", which foreshadows the plot of the novel. This edition is lightly edited by Hillerman and, in some cases, he includes notes to remind himself of information he wishes to add for plot for consistency. Additionally, the names of secondary characters appear to not have not been finalized in this draft.

Supplementing The Binding Theory: On The Question Of Proper Binding, Hector A. Torres Jan 1993

Supplementing The Binding Theory: On The Question Of Proper Binding, Hector A. Torres

English Language and Literature Faculty Publications

In this essay I want to propose that the phenomenon of proper binding is relevant to the theory of grammar and suggest that, if allowed to play a part in the writing of a generative grammar, proper binding can serve as an interface between the form of the grammar and its use in discourse pragmatics. With the term proper binding I refer to the prescriptive and descriptive statement requiring that anaphor and bound pronouns agree with their antecedents with respect to person, number, gender. In this vein, proper binding relates to the theory of grammar in the same way that …

Laws Of Internal Composition. Poems With… Problems!, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

For me, Florentin Smarandache’s appearance in the Romanian literature – I tell this from the beginning and with all my conviction –, is worth a real event. […] Not his character’s exoticism is interesting, nor his fabulous and dangerous “diligence,” but the excellent value of his unusual struggle-in-unknown that is becoming an Oeuvre.

Kingdom Of Lost Waters, Sonya Hess Jan 1993

Kingdom Of Lost Waters, Sonya Hess

Ahsahta Press

Hess’s strategies for revelation vary from the Roethkean contemplation of “little” events, to assuming the myths of native Americans, to direct contemporary narrative. Many of these poems read like meditations, where little presupposition is imposed upon landscapes or objects. Hess’s careful imagery allows the grasshopper, the cloud, and even the artist Rubens to speak to the reader. The power of the Western landscape and the human heart coalesce in Hess’s verse.

Loopholes Of Resistance: Harriet Jacobs' Slave Narrative And The Critique Of Agency In Foucault, Michelle Burnham Jan 1993

Loopholes Of Resistance: Harriet Jacobs' Slave Narrative And The Critique Of Agency In Foucault, Michelle Burnham

English

Located in the exact center of Harriet Jacobs' i86r slave narrative, Incidents in the Life of a Shve Girl, is a chapter entitled "The Loophole of Retreat. " The chapter's title refers to the tiny crawlspace above her grandmother's shed, where Jacobs hides for seven years in an effort to escape her master's persecution and the "peculiar institution" of slavery which authorizes that persecution. This chapter's central location, whether the result of accident or design, would seem to suggest its structural significance within Jacobs' narrative. Yet its central location is by no means obvious, for "The Loophole of Retreat" goes …

Say What I Mean: Metaphor And The Exeter Book Riddles, Sarah L. Thomson Jan 1993

Say What I Mean: Metaphor And The Exeter Book Riddles, Sarah L. Thomson

Honors Papers

The Exeter Book riddles are a heterogeneous collection, and at first glance it seems they have little III common beyond the riddle format and the final teasing challenge, "Say what I mean," or "Say what I am." The riddles range in length from a few lines to over a hundred, in tone from the religious to the mundane to the obscene; their subjects can be as specific as a butter churn or as broad as creation itself. One crucial similarity, however, does unify the riddles: all (well, almost all) are built around underlying, unstated metaphors. These metaphors-- such as a …

Spaces Between: Towards Depolarized Readings Of Incidents In The Life Of A Slave Girl, Bethany Suzanne Schneider Jan 1993

Spaces Between: Towards Depolarized Readings Of Incidents In The Life Of A Slave Girl, Bethany Suzanne Schneider

Honors Papers

Harriet Jacobs' Incidents in the Life of A Slave Girl is a text which, written in a culture divided between polarities of race and gender, has continued in the 130 years of its reception to traverse a landscape of mutably yet continually divided racisms and sexisms, changeably yet continually cloven raced and gendered identities. The text itself, due to the legally and socially constructed polar ontologies of race and gender in 19th century America, is tom between what can be said and what can't, what is true and what is false, what is black and what is white. The "tears" …
