George Eliot- Bbc2 Night School, Ruth Harris Mar 1994

George Eliot- Bbc2 Night School, Ruth Harris

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

It is said that Napoleon interviewed his prisoners at three o'clock in the morning when their powers of resistance were at their lowest ebb. My video recorder saved me from testing his theory between the unearthly hours of 2.00 and 4.00 a.m. on Thursday 10th March when BBC2's Night School presented its resource material on the life, work and times of George Eliot. If I had had to stay awake, however, then I think that Professor Rosemary Ashton and her able colleagues would have overcome my powers of resistance with Napoleonic skill. The material was attractively varied, and concentration was …

Review Of Romanticism And Gender By Anne K. Mellor, Diane Hoeveler Mar 1994

Review Of Romanticism And Gender By Anne K. Mellor, Diane Hoeveler

English Faculty Research and Publications

"Does Romanticism have a gender?" Anne Mellor poses this straightforward question at the beginning of her latest book, a valuable and most welcome addition to the burgeoning field of English Romanticism and gender studies. Her affirmative answer, supported by examining twenty of the most influential women publishing between 1780 and 1830, allows her to claim that "a paradigm shift in our conceptual understanding of British literary Romanticism occurs when we give equal weight to the thought and writing of the women of the period" (p. i). Indeed, Mellor's response to her initial question succeeds in complicating our understanding of the …

Points to the differences between Barrie’s original Peter Pan, and Disney’s animated version of 1953. Contends Disney did the most damage to the character of Mr. Darling and thus “disregard[ed] Barrie’s primary motive for creating Peter Pan.”

Breaking The Pattern: Alan Garner's The Owl Service And The Mabinogion, Sarah Beach

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Examines how Garner’s The Owl Service reflects events of the Mabinogion in modern terms. Pays particular attention to issues of parental possessiveness, control and expectation, and the need to break “deterministic patterns.”

Censoring The World Riddle, Tim Callahan Jan 1994

Censoring The World Riddle, Tim Callahan

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Detailed examination of the efforts of Christian fundamentalists to censor fantasy films and books. Asserts that “one must give up the right to control as the price of entry” into Faërie. Fundamentalist ideologies do not allow for that “suspension of judgment” necessary to confront the World Riddle, or Faërie.

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Uses “Jung’s theories of anima as a critical framework [...] to demonstrate that Sexton’s poems [...] critique the psychology of romantic love that informs the Grimm Brothers’ tales and the impact of that ideology on women.”

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

NOTE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

It’s a great pleasure in this new edition of ORTS to introduce William Webb and Roy Bricknell, who are now responsible for its production. Different editors and production artists instinctively brand something of their personality upon what they are producing – such is the uniqueness of creativity. For this reason I look forward to this new phase of ORTS existence. A myriad thanks to our previous editor, Nicholas Bolton, who performed an excellent job both in layout and content.

Orts: The George MacDonald Society Newsletter

Some members of the Society enjoyed a sunny afternoon in Hastings on the 24th. September, viewing the places where MacDonald lived and one or two associated with him and his family. If the numbers were few, that made it easier for Edward Preston of the Dickens Fellowship to guide us and even read extracts from relevant material without holding up the passers-by. Mr Preston had worked hard getting his information together and checking doubtful assumptions by previous writers, (which tend to be repeated indefinitely if not corrected). His kindly guidance was much appreciated.
