Harold Godwinson, King of England for nine months in 1066, was undeniably an assertive opportunist - albeit a brave one -and perhaps a traitor; Edward the Confessor was a misguided monarch -or at least a bad judge of character-and William of Normandy was a righteous conqueror, a ruler asserting his legal right to the English crown. This, at least, is the interpretation of historical events presented by the Bayeux Tapestry, the late eleventh-century embroidery that Otto Pacht has called the ‘earliest work of secular art on a monumental scale which has survived from the Middle Ages.’3 In this study, I …

The paper that I am presenting is a bit unconventional. It is a narrative and historical piece which tests many of the theoretical claims I have been studying over the past two years. I took three courses important to this work: one on the women pioneers who settled the American frontier, another on the relationship of gender to genre, and I am currently studying the creation of self in autobiography. After studying different theories on women writers and the experiences of women pioneers, I decided to test the things I had learned by writing my own story.

My diploma proved I knew English; my teaching certificate proved I knew how to teach it. Armed only with these and a head filled with idealistic visions of myself as the next Mr. Chips, I landed my first teaching job. As a mid-year graduate, I was lucky to flnd any high school job, so I jumped at the first, and only, offer. I started work on January 3, taking over for an established teacher who at mid-term had gone on permanent disability leave.
The Treatment Of Voice In Some Of The Works Of Some Women Writers Of The Harlem Renaissance, Patrick Steven Bernard
The Treatment Of Voice In Some Of The Works Of Some Women Writers Of The Harlem Renaissance, Patrick Steven Bernard
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This study examines the relation between the quest for identity-formation that characterized the Harlem Renaissance and the treatment of Voice by the women writers of the period to define their feminine identity. The concept of voice as used in this study refers to the method of self-expression and self-articulation to define the feminine subject by the women writers of the period. The importance of the Harlem Renaissance as a period of black self-determination is the main principle that is used here to particularize the feminine quest. The study looks at the Harlem Renaissance mainly from the perspective of the women …
Paired Reading : An Investigation Into Using Parents As Tutors In One Mainstream High School, Miguel R. Fernandez
Paired Reading : An Investigation Into Using Parents As Tutors In One Mainstream High School, Miguel R. Fernandez
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Contemporary research on reading has investigated the use of parents and peer tutors in assisting schools to improve reading accuracy and comprehension. Some of the techniques that have been used are Hearing Reading, Paired Reading, Shared Reading, Relaxed Reading, Pause, Prompt and Praise and Direct Instruction. Of these techniques, Direct Instruction and Paired Reading have been shown to be the most effective programs using parents within the primary school setting. However, many studies in Paired Reading research have lacked experimental data using parents as tutors in high schools. The aim of this paper was to assess the impact of Paired …

A Study Of The Linguistic Semantic And Sociolinguistic Components Of The English Modal System, Jeffery Hutcheson
A Study Of The Linguistic Semantic And Sociolinguistic Components Of The English Modal System, Jeffery Hutcheson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In this thesis I examine the linguistic, semantic and sociolinguistic components of the English modal system and the difficulty the system presents to both instructors and learners of English as a second language (ESL). The purpose of this study was to determine what these components are and how they affect communication. I begin by defining what modality is and how it is manifested in English. The focus is upon the one-word modals and not the phrasal modals; however, some phrasal modals are explicated when a contrast exists between the meaning of the one-word modal and its phrasal equivalent. After the …

Romancing Visual Women: From Canon To Console, Roberta Sabbath
Romancing Visual Women: From Canon To Console, Roberta Sabbath
English Faculty Research
This dissertation juxtaposes the romantic modal treatment of powerful, admired women which canonical male authors and feminist authors and critics construct with those constructed by contemporary women for the visual mass media of video, broadcast television, and computer. The discourse of the former produces the figure of a fragmented woman who is rare, supernatural, marginalized, and impossible. The discourse of the latter produces the figure of a psychologized woman who is typical, natural, mainstream, and possible. To examine the discourse of impossibility, I use three canonical works: Augustine's Confessions; Chretien de Troyes' Perceval; and Dante's Divine Comedy. I also survey …

Strategies In Theodore Dreiser's Trilogy Of Desire To Resolve The Division Between The Material And The Spiritual, Claas Riese
Strategies In Theodore Dreiser's Trilogy Of Desire To Resolve The Division Between The Material And The Spiritual, Claas Riese
Dissertations and Theses
A study of strategies and attempts in Theodore Dreiser's novels The Financier, The Titan and The Stoic to resolve the conflict between the material and the spiritual. The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate that conflicts in Dreiser criticism reflect unresolved conflicts between these issues in his "Trilogy". Having outlined and shown the division in the literary criticism of the "Trilogy", in the first chapter of this thesis, I will discuss the three main themes, finance, art and women, which can be seen as strategies to bridge the division between the material and the spiritual. I will attempt to …

Revising Lives: Bernard Shaw And His Biographer, Sarah Wadsworth
English Faculty Research and Publications
Shaw's galley revisions of Archibald Henderson's 1932 biography, Bernard Shaw: Playboy and Prophet, reveal a unique collaboration between biographer and subject. The result is a subversion of biographical conventions, in which the assumed voice of the biographer lends credence and authority to the disguised voice of the subject.

We Wretched Of The Earth: The Search For A Language Of Justice, John C. Hawley

"In the beginning was the Word," writes John-God's revealing utterance that "was made flesh and lived among us." This incarnational character of the Word, this "living among us," has demanded of Christians in each age a reinterpretation of its original and ongoing meaning. If the protean nature of God's self-expression has seen a continuing "translation" in each age, though, it is becoming increasingly evident among church members that a similar task is also required in each ethnic milieu. The "us" among whom the Word lives is made up of many communities of discourse, and a logocentric theology like Christianity must …

I may be hard put to classify the latest work of noted poet, historian, literary critic, linguist, and Africanist Kamau (Eddie) Brathwaite, but I have no problem describing it - compelling, riveting, unforgettable! Begun when Brathwaite received the devastating news that his wife Doris (his Zea Mexican) was dying of cancer, it is a paean to her, a record of his efforts to deal with her dying, death, and absence, an account of their relationship, and an autobiographical confessional. The Zea Mexican Diary includes diary entries, letters, memorates, an epigraph, expressions of sympathy, confessions, autobiographical narrative, poems - but whatever …

Jesse B. Semple And The Black Press : The Voice Of Black People, Mary A. Massey
Master's Theses
Black newspapers play a vital role in keeping people up-to-date with what's happening in the Black community. This study will show how Black newspapers play a vital role in reporting news and comments from an Afro-American perspective. It will provide a historical overview of Black news as well as a close examination of Langston Hughes' columns and his character of Jesse B. Semple within the context of the Black press, particularly the Chicago Defender.
The results of this study will reveal the joys and concerns that Afro-Americans shared with each other through the Black newspapers and show how the character …
