Austen’S Attractive Rogues: Willoughby, Wickham And Frank Churchill, Lynda A. Hall Jan 1996

Austen’S Attractive Rogues: Willoughby, Wickham And Frank Churchill, Lynda A. Hall

English Faculty Articles and Research

"Marianne, Elizabeth, and Emma needed a meteor to burst through the mist of their own self-delusion. What is it about the Willoughbys, Wickhams, and Frank Churchills of the world that continues to attract us? We understand that Marianne is easily fooled, but what is it that deceives and attracts Elizabeth and Emma?"

Medicine & Literature (Spring 1996) (Whitman College), Robert D. Tobin

Syllabi

This course was taught by Robert Tobin at Whitman College. Professor Tobin worked at Whitman for 18 years as associate dean of the faculty and chair of the humanities, and was named Cushing Eells Professor of the Humanities.

"In World Literature 390, I want to examine from a literary perspective medicine and medical discourse. How do authors use metaphors of sickness and health, illness and cure, disease and well-being in their literature? How in turn do these literary and rhetorical metaphors affect everyday understandings of these basic concepts?"

Evidence For The Unseen: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Spiritualism, And The Quest For A Scientific Religion, Andrea Williams Jan 1996

Evidence For The Unseen: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Spiritualism, And The Quest For A Scientific Religion, Andrea Williams

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

Nineteenth-century scientific discoveries changed forever the way that reality and truth were defined by placing empirical models foremost not only in the scientific community, but in society in general. This led to the questioning of traditional Christianity, and consequently to the development of spiritualism, a belief in the scientifically verifiable occurrence of communication with the spirits of the dead who provided guidance to those still embodied. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was deeply involved in spiritualism, and himself serves as an example of the controversy because he found his scientific training incompatible with Christianity. Spiritualism drew from both science and religion, …

Contemporary Sports Writing In Creative Non-Fiction: A Study Of Madeleine Blais' In These Girls, Hopeis A Muscle, H.G. Bissinger's Friday Night Lights, And Tim Keown's Skyline, Sheila Eldred

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

My thesis defines the role of contemporary sports writing in creative non-fiction. I found the three works I studied to be precendent-setting examples of the genre. In examining the historical aspects of creative non-fiction, I found a direct correlation withthe new journalism of the 1960s. My second chapter discusses these roots of creative non-fiction in-depth, involving the works of Tom Wolfe, Gay Talese, and other 1960s authors. My third and fourth chapters are devoted to describing the journalistic techniques and fictional techniques that are used in creative non-fiction. The three works I studied are examined in detail. In my conclusion …

Feminism And The Postmodern Impulse: Post-World War Ii Fiction., Magali Michael Jan 1996

Feminism And The Postmodern Impulse: Post-World War Ii Fiction., Magali Michael

Faculty Books

Michael analyzes the intersections between feminist politics and postmodern aesthetics as demonstrated in recent Anglo-American fiction. While much has been written on various aspects of postmodernism and postmodern fiction and of feminism and feminist fiction, very little attention has been given to the postmodern aesthetic strategies that surface in post-World War II feminist fiction. Feminism and the Postmodern Impulse examines ways in which many widely read and acclaimed novels with feminist impulses engage and transform subversive aesthetic strategies usually associated with postmodern fiction to strengthen their feminist political edge. The author discusses many examples of recent feminist-postmodern fiction, and explores …
