The Interplay Of Language And Music In Machaut's Virelai 'Foy Porter', Phyllis Brown, William Peter Mahrt Jan 1997

The Interplay Of Language And Music In Machaut's Virelai 'Foy Porter', Phyllis Brown, William Peter Mahrt

English

Scarcely anywhere else in the repertory of lyric poetry is the identity of the poet and the composer quite as apparent as in the works of Guillaume de Machaut, the foremost French poet and musician of the fourteenth century (d1377). His works with music should be approached confidently as integral lyrics, as composite works of poetry and music, because he wrote about the process of providing music for poetry and writing texts to be set to music. Furthermore, he specified the sequence of his own compositions- narrative and lyrical, poetical and musical - all in a single book.

when she was 24 years old (or so she claimed) and the beautiful toast of London literary circles. Her first novel. The Confessions of the Nun of St. Omer, was written when she was eighteen (or 28, depending on what biographical source one credits) and in the grip of an infatuation with the excessive gothicism of Lewis' The Monk} Dacre's novels by 1809 were ridiculed as "lovely ROSA's prose" by Byron, who went on to mock the novels as "prose in masquerade/Whose strains, the faithful echoes of her mind,/Leave wondering comprehension far behind" (English Bards and Scotch Reviewers, 756-58). Anne Hutchinson And The Economics Of Antinomian Selfhood In Colonial New England, Michelle Burnham Jan 1997

Anne Hutchinson And The Economics Of Antinomian Selfhood In Colonial New England, Michelle Burnham

English

If American literary histories so often begin with the New England Puritans, it is because histories with such a starting point are able to tell an appealing national story of coherent community and religious freedom. So, at any rate, suggests T. H. Breen when he notes that beginning the national narrative instead with John Smith and the Virginia colony would require telling a far less pleasing tale of American greed, domination, and exploitation. Philip Gura has likewise wondered how Sacvan Bercovitch's model of an "American self," formulated from exclusively Puritan New England materials, might be complicated by John Smith's mercantilism. …

Science Fiction: Rhetoric, Authenticity, Textuality And The Museum Of Jurassic Technology, Jeremiah Dyehouse Jan 1997

Science Fiction: Rhetoric, Authenticity, Textuality And The Museum Of Jurassic Technology, Jeremiah Dyehouse

Honors Papers

About two years ago I became interested in museums as rhetorical entities. I took a course at the Allen Memorial Art Museum where I got a sense of how arguments are created through the techniques of visual display, the socalled "informatics" of museum exhibition. In an art museum, however, these informatics are always bound into a relationship with the aura of the art object as artifact. In the context of a cult of art (an art museum?), the physical fact of an art object's existence can never be rhetorically negotiated. Even if nothing else is fixed, its physical presence acts …

Aboriginality And English : Report To The Australian Research Council, Ian G. Malcolm, Marek M. Koscielecki

Research outputs pre 2011

The relation of aboriginality to English has important implications for communication between Aborigines and other Australians, and especially for the education of Aboriginal and other Australian children within a context of reconciliation.

The investigation of which this is the final report derives from the assumptions that Aboriginal English has been maintained at least in part because of its function' as a bearer of aboriginality and that, by exploring the nature of the distinctiveness of this dialect and the historical circumstances of its formation and ongoing development we may better understand how to provide appropriately for the communicative and educational needs …
