Arthur Davison Ficke and Witter Bynner were American poetry's first Surrealists, preceding Breton and his founding of Surrealism, with the publication of its first manifesto, in France in 1924. Though the creative merits of 1916's "Spectra: A Book of Poetic Experiments" are many, most scholars and critics regard it as a hoax intended to mock Imagism and the like. But Ficke and Bynner, using the pseudonyms Anne Knish and Emanuel Morgan, respectively, blazed trails no poets had priorly dared to venture down.

Christian creators now can look to their example while writing their own works of art. Currently, Christian fiction is in a sad state, known for mediocre romance novels that hardly portray faith in a moving or truthful manner. Sir Nicholas: Chivalric Tropes And Dickens's Critique Of The Aristocracy In Nicholas Nickleby, Erin Quinn

Honors Theses

One of the most prominent themes in Charles Dickens’s 1838-39 novel Nicholas Nickleby is the theme of class. In particular, Dickens highlights the tension between the middle and upper classes through the contrast between the middle-class titular protagonist and the novel’s two aristocrats, Sir Mulberry Hawk and Lord Frederick Verisopht. In this thesis, I argue that Dickens foregrounds this contrast through his consistent deployment of tropes of chivalry and knighthood to describe Nicholas and his friends despite their middle-class status. I analyze the application of chivalric language, concepts, and characteristics to the actions and attitudes of the middle-class characters and …

This literature review examines the role of rats in picture books and juvenile literature. Twenty-three books in total are reviewed. Seven of which are picture books. They range from the years 1908 to 2021. These books are reviewed under four categories: Positive Attributes, Negative Attributes, Illustrations, and the Cruelty and Exploitation of Rats. I have found that rats are depicted in a multitude of ways. Negative depictions of rats are brought up in almost every book including a rat character. This brings me to believe that rats are viewed negatively in children’s literature. Throughout this essay, I discuss each category …

This essay begins from the premise that acts of thinking and writing are shaped immanently by corporeal need. Accordingly, my aim is to sketch a vision of composition pedagogy that acknowledges the moves and modulations of the thinking body. The route I take to get there explores four works of critical prose that mobilize form and content toward a radical re-orientation of body-in-space and body-in-writing. These texts—by Eleni Stecopoulos, Robert Kocik, William James, and Eli Clare—are to varying degrees experimental, demonstrating a manner of textual difficulty that signals the visceral difficulty implied in any act of writing. In this article, we argue for an expanded conception of language assess-ment based on the principles of James Moffett and centered on outfitting teachers with useful information with which to guide their practice and optimize student learning. Importantly, we begin the article by demonstrating that Moffett’s interest in assessing language growth occurs much earlier than previously thought. Reconstructing Modernism: How Literary Experimentation Created Outlets For Faulkner And Toomer To Reinterpret The American South’S History, Jack Cattie

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

An era of literary and artistic experimentation known as Modernism began in the 1920s allowing authors to reinterpret history and society. American Modernist authors William Faulkner and Jean Toomer used a variety of innovative literary techniques to depict post-Civil War Reconstruction (1864-1877) and its aftermath. Faulkner’s Absalom, Absalom! and Toomer’s Cane examine themes of race, violence, and the Lost Cause by manipulating time and perspective, shifting genres, and introducing new sentence structures. This article situates these novels alongside contemporary historical monographs and articles including works by Eric Foner, Deborah Gray White, Joe William Trotter Jr., and David Blight to demonstrate …
