The Use Of Obsessions And Delusions As A Tragic Device In The Major Plays Of Eugene O'Neill, Ruth Bartlett Thomas

This introductory chapter contains definitions of obsessions and delusions, and examines the validity of these ideas as tragic devices. It discusses obsessions from the point of view of Freud and Jung.

The major plays of Eugene O’Neill have been divided into three psychological types: the first type we shall call the statement-of-the-problem plays; the second, the simple anima plays; the third, the complex anima plays. These terms and divisions will be explained as we proceed.

In this thesis I have given summaries and characterizations of the women characters in Eugene Gladstone O' Neill's plays of more than one act in the order of their writing. At the close of the summarizations and characterizations of the individual plays I have attempted to classify the women characters according to their personality types and their moral traits. All the plays with the exception of six, Bread and Butter, Servitude, Second Engineer or The Personal Equation, Now I Ask You, Ancient Mariner, and S.S. Glencairn are included in this study. An estimate of Noel Coward's contribution to the comedy of manners necessitates an understanding of: (1) the nature and the place of the comedy of manners in modern drama, (2) Noel Coward's background, and (3) an analysis of Noel Coward's formula for the comedy of manners. We find in the material relating to modern drama. little discussion of the comedy of manners. Occasionally plays may be mentioned as comedies of manners, but there is no discussion as to the specific nature of the comedy of manners in modern drama. I have endeavored in this thesis to create a greater appreciation for the artistic vales found in the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. I have attempted to accomplish this by first presenting a background which consisted to the lives of the two great collaborators, Sir Gilbert and Sir Sullivan. My next step was to relate the stories of the operettas and interesting information concerning each. As a final step I took the important dramatic elements which should be contained in a good drama and showed how they were applied in developing the librettos.

Within the last half dozen years there has been a revival in the writing and production of historical plays. The purpose of this thesis is to show how theatre-critics react to the outstanding plays of this type which, incidentally, nearly monopolized the boards for this period. Thomas Moore started writing at an early age. His parents were extremely interested in their son's education and consequently had sent him to school as soon as possible. At the excellent grammar school which he attended young Thomas was well-versed in the fundamentals of grammar and of writing besides being taught and reminded never to neglect the habit of rhyming. To these practices he was ever afterwards indebted and before his fifteenth birthday two of his lyrical verses were printed in a popular Dublin magazine.
