In The Margins: Thresholds Of Text And Identity In U.S.-Mexico Border Literature, Allison E. Fagan
In The Margins: Thresholds Of Text And Identity In U.S.-Mexico Border Literature, Allison E. Fagan
Dissertations
My project links discussions of U.S.-Mexico border literature's emphasis on marginalized identity with the growing textual studies interest in the marginal, often-invisible processes which aid the production and shape the reception of books. The dissertation not only calls attention to textual instability, or the places where the differing and even opposing intentions of authors, publishers, and editors often become strikingly clear, but also focuses on the political, racial, ethnic, and social instabilities inherent in publishing the work of borderlands writers. It advocates and advances a sustained attentiveness to the conditions under which border literature can and does get produced. Authors …

The Art In Teaching Writing, Sally Helene Tooley
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of the study was to determine how exceptional writing teachers utilize visual images in their teaching of writing. Specifically, the researcher was interested to discover how drawing might be used as a learning tool in the various stages of the writing process. Nine elementary teachers - recognized as exemplary teachers of writing, completed a detailed questionnaire in reference to their writing instruction. All of the teachers surveyed value visuals highly and recognize the potential impact that drawing can have on writing. However, not all of these teachers are utilizing drawing or visual strategies in their writing instruction on …
Storytelling Through Brushstrokes: Minerva Teichert's Visualization Of The Mormon Pioneer Experience And Messages To Her Audience, Amy L. Williamson
Storytelling Through Brushstrokes: Minerva Teichert's Visualization Of The Mormon Pioneer Experience And Messages To Her Audience, Amy L. Williamson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
"We must paint the great Mormon story of our pioneers in mural decorations so that 'he who runs may read,'" remarked Minerva Teichert. When she created her pioneer panorama, Teichert attempted to do something different; whereas other Mormon artists had drawn on their personal pioneer experiences or sought inspiration from Church-approved publications regarding the trek, her visual inspiration came from the oral narratives she heard as a child. Because she used these narratives, Teichert portrayed the Mormon pioneer experience from a woman's perspective and voiced their experiences to male and non-Mormon audiences. Not only did Teichert offer a counterpoint to …

Bloudy Tygrisses: Murderous Women In Early Modern English Drama And Popular Literature, Alexandra Hill
Bloudy Tygrisses: Murderous Women In Early Modern English Drama And Popular Literature, Alexandra Hill
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines artistic and literary images of murderous women in popular print published in sixteenth and seventeenth-century England. The construction of murderous women in criminal narratives, published between 1558 and 1625 in pamphlet, ballad, and play form, is examined in the context of contemporary historical records and cultural discourse. Chapter One features a literature review of the topic in recent scholarship. Chapter Two, comprised of two subsections, discusses representations of early modern women in contemporary literature and criminal archives. The subsections in Chapter Two examine early modern treatises, sermons, and essays concerning the nature of women, the roles and …

Visual Communication And The Map: How Maps As Visual Objects Convey Meaning In Specific Contexts, Amy Propen
Visual Communication And The Map: How Maps As Visual Objects Convey Meaning In Specific Contexts, Amy Propen
English
This article reports the results of a case study of two maps, produced by the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Natural Resources Defense Council, and their involvement in a federal court case over the deployment of the Navy's low-frequency active sonar. Borrowing from Kress and van Leeuwen's (1996) approach to visual analysis, Turnbull's (1989) understanding of the map, and Latour's (1990) understanding of how visuals work in social contexts, the article offers an analytical approach to studying maps as powerful visual, rhetorical objects.
The Relevance Of Feenberg's Critical Theory Of Technology To Critical Visual Literacy: The Case Of Scientific And Technical Illustrations, Kathryn M. Northcut
The Relevance Of Feenberg's Critical Theory Of Technology To Critical Visual Literacy: The Case Of Scientific And Technical Illustrations, Kathryn M. Northcut
English and Technical Communication Faculty Research & Creative Works
Andrew Feenberg's critical theory of technology is an underutilized, relatively unknown resource in technical communication which could be exploited not only for its potential clarification of large social issues that involve our discipline, but also specifically toward the development of a critical theory of illustrations. Applications of critical theory help strengthen our discipline by forcing us to delineate extant approaches and consider whether democratic goals are being achieved through those approaches. If a critical theory of illustrations can be built from Feenberg's critical theory of technology, it should be useful for classroom instructors and researchers as well as theorists.

Digital Storytelling: The Application Of Vichian Theory, Karen Pierotti
Digital Storytelling: The Application Of Vichian Theory, Karen Pierotti
Theses and Dissertations
Storytelling is often looked at as something archaic or something that simpler cultures engage in. However, in our sophisticated and highly technological world storytelling swirls about us though we may not always recognize it. This thesis looks at the phenomenon of digital storytelling that functions to create community on the Internet. In order to ground this phenomenon in theory, I examine the works of Giambattista Vico, the 18th-century Neapolitan philosopher/rhetorician, who lived on the cusp of the Renaissance and the Age of Enlightenment. Furthermore, as a teacher of rhetoric to youth, Vico admonished young people to study the arts of …

Bringing Her Fist Down On That Wholeness: Rewriting Gendered Narratives In Zoeìˆ Wicomb's Fiction, Rachel Heicher
Masters Theses
This thesis situates South African writer Zoë Wicomb's fictional work within a critical context of current feminist theory, exploring Wicomb's response to a central problem for poststructuralist feminism-how can we deconstruct femininity while simultaneously conserving a platform for feminist political activism; how can we assert. on the one hand, that there are no "women", and then, on the other, continue to campaign on behalf of "women's" rights? Wicomb's two novels to date, You Can't Get Lost in Cape Town (1987) and David's Story (2000) serve as test studies for a model of gender that fluctuates and purposefully and constructively embodies …

Girls’ Literacy In The Progressive Era: Female And American Indian Identity At The Genoa Indian School, Amy M. Goodburn
Girls’ Literacy In The Progressive Era: Female And American Indian Identity At The Genoa Indian School, Amy M. Goodburn
Department of English: Faculty Publications
The Progressive Era (1870–1930) is marked by several forces that shaped U.S. girls’ literacies, including the success of the common school movement (and coeducational high schools in particular), the progressive reform movement (especially in terms of progressive educators), new technologies of literacy and print media, women’s leadership in social welfare legislation, and the proliferation of women’s clubs and civic groups. All these forces shaped girls’ reading and writ ing practices in both constraining and empowering ways. In this chapter, I examine girls’ literacy experiences in the Progressive Era within the context of one group of American Indian girls who attended …
