Imitations Of Greek Tragedy In English Literature, Janet O'Neill May 1932

Imitations Of Greek Tragedy In English Literature, Janet O'Neill

Bachelors’ Theses

In the pages that follow there has been no attempt to cover the entire subject of imitations of Greek tragedy in English literature. Four prominet literary works, considered as imitations of Greek tragedy, have been selected for discussion as to their imitative qualities. The guiding principles for this discussion were gathered from a perusal and analysis of the works of Sophocles, Aeschylus, and Euripides. Much valuable information was also gained from The Tragic Drama of the Greeks, by A. E. Haigh.

The Dramatic Monologues Of Robert Browning, Vernon H. Erbstoeszer Jan 1932

The Dramatic Monologues Of Robert Browning, Vernon H. Erbstoeszer

Bachelors’ Theses

It shall be the purpose of this work so to study the Dramatic Monologues of Robert Browning that a true understanding and a sound evaluation of their significance may be obtained. To this end there are treated hereinafter such groups of monologues, and such individual poems in each group, as are sufficient to suggest Browning's range of subject matter, to hint at his high ideals, to show his unusual knowledge of and interest in mu.sic, art, and obscure history, and finally,to demonstrate thereby the worth of the Dramatic Monologue. Because of obvious impossibility, and for the sake of avoiding repetition, …

A Study Of The Cluster Novel As A Development In Contemporary Fiction, Mary Salber Jan 1932

A Study Of The Cluster Novel As A Development In Contemporary Fiction, Mary Salber

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

By 1929 and 1930 the popularity and the increasing use of the cluster form caught the attention of most careful readers of fiction. Its original adaptations, its unique technique, its clever appropriation of the best in the novel and in the short story forms, its use by leading novelists, its suggested similarity to age-old literary methods, and it's very apparent possibilities - all these make it a subject worthy of some detailed study.

It shall be the aim in this discussion to search out the very early traces of fictional forms similar to the cluster type, to attempt to account …

Evolution And Development Of The Sentimental Comedy, Mary Mina May 1931

Evolution And Development Of The Sentimental Comedy, Mary Mina

Bachelors’ Theses

The writer has purposed in this essay to trace the rise, development, arid evolution of the comedy. of sensibility, from about the year 1700 to 1177. The movement was one, intricated with not a few interwoven trends. The fusion of sentimentalism into the comedy through social, moral, philosophic, literary, and historical factors has, in part, accounted for the intricacy of the genre, known as the comedy of sensibility. Few authors have considered it worth while to devote much time to the amassed dramatic productions of the eighteenth century. Thus, the complexity ·of the problem is increased.

Eugene O'Neill And His Prize Winning Plays, Joesph Flynn Rice Jan 1931

Eugene O'Neill And His Prize Winning Plays, Joesph Flynn Rice

Bachelors’ Theses

Eugene O’Neill has ever walked alone and seemed a stranger to those about him. In his photographs you will see a mask of arrogant disdain. The tortured dreamer’s eyes, the tossed black head with its streaks of white, the scowling, thunderous face glimpsed at some formal dress rehearsal, escaping from praise, seem to confirm the legend.

Virgil And Tennyson: A Literary Parallel, Marie Harriet Kraus Jun 1930

Virgil And Tennyson: A Literary Parallel, Marie Harriet Kraus

Bachelors’ Theses

A strong resemblance has often been noted between Virgil and Alfred Tennyson. Phases of this resemblance have been treated by various writers, notably Mr. T. H. Warren, Miss Elizabeth Nitchie, and Mr. W. P. Mustard.

It is our purpose in this thesis to draw an analogy between the two .poets. This will include a comparison of their lives and their personal views and convictions; also, a comparison of the characteristics of their work and of the similarities which can be found in their modes of expression. Our method in evolving this analogy is to place the biographies of the two …

Points Of Technique In Certain Contemporary English Novelists, Aurelia Gertrude Valley May 1930

Points Of Technique In Certain Contemporary English Novelists, Aurelia Gertrude Valley

Bachelors’ Theses

The purpose of this essay is to show that the English novel has taken a step away from the traditional type of treatment and under a group of younger novelists is assuming a new form distinguished by its technique and novel ideas of character, plot and viewpoint.

I have quoted freely from the leading exponents of the new form believing that the technique is best illustrated in terms of itself.

At this point I wish to acknowledge my indebtedness to Chevalley "The Modern English Novel”, E.M. Forster ’’Aspects of the Novel”, Lubbock ’’The Graft of Fiction", Grabo "The Technique of …

Jeanne D'Arc In Modern Drama, Mary Cordea Woelfel May 1930

Jeanne D'Arc In Modern Drama, Mary Cordea Woelfel

Bachelors’ Theses

The Jeanne d'Arc literature provides a delightful as well as scholarly excursion that may keep the mind entranced for days, months, nay even for years. But we shall confine ourselves to a short and pointed description. We shall follow Jeanne of Domremy through five centuries of stormy upheavals, religious as well as political. We shall meet her entrancing figure, exalted and deified, maligned and reviled, in history and otherwise, in medieval and modern versions of drama and poetry. But everywhere we shall greet her as a perennial yet youthful charming figure, in American, German, and English literature, and naturally in …

The Plays Of John Masefield, Catharine Genevieve Coffey May 1930

The Plays Of John Masefield, Catharine Genevieve Coffey

Bachelors’ Theses

In this thesis I propose by a study of the plays of John Masefield to discover his dramatic technique and his claim to fame and regard in the capacity of a playwright. The method that I used was to examine the plays of John Masefield, to read his theory of tragedy and to apply it particularly to "The Tragedy of Nan".

In preparation for the compiling of this thesis I read a collection of the pre-war plays of John Masefield and was chiefly indebted. to "John Masefield, "A Study" by Cicil Biggane and "John Masefield, A Critical Study" by W.H. …

Bachelors’ Theses

A Study Of Shakespere's Dramatic Technique Through His Comedies, Dorothy Tolford Apr 1930

A Study Of Shakespere's Dramatic Technique Through His Comedies, Dorothy Tolford

Bachelors’ Theses

The dramatic technique of any author, if it is to be studied for its growth and development and increase of skill, is best and most clearly seen when his works are put in chronological order and then compared one with the other. In each play or novel, the acquisition of some new dexterity or aptitude, which makes it an Improvement over the preceding work, is evident. It is not enough to look simply for the general effect of the play; the growth of technique is seen only in a thorough study of the mechanics of the play.

Meredith And Galsworthy: A Comparison Of Their Arts, Paula Joan Peckarsky Jan 1930

Meredith And Galsworthy: A Comparison Of Their Arts, Paula Joan Peckarsky

Bachelors’ Theses

the purpose of this thesis is to institute a comparison between George Meredith and John Galsworthy. The points of comparison will be based on the differences or similarities in the style, philosophy, and general characteristics of each man as found through a careful study of the novels written by each. The novels compared were chosen by their importance in the literary periods of each man and not by any outstanding similarities between some novel of Galsworthy's and another of Meredith's. The following books have aided me very much: "George Meredith," by J.B. Priestley, "George Meredith, A Study and An Appraisal," …

Certain Aspects Of Pioneer Life As Presented In The Modern Novel, Elta Louise Livoni Jan 1930

Certain Aspects Of Pioneer Life As Presented In The Modern Novel, Elta Louise Livoni

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The term pioneer simply means one who pushes ahead to remove obstacles and to prepare the way for others who are to follow. Nevertheless, when we speak of the pioneers in American history, we are really speaking of three different types of men who have only a little in common.

All pioneers leave behind them settled communities and highly civilized life and push out into an unknown and. unsettled country;y. Also, all pioneers are seekers, but they do not all seek the same things, Some are seeking adventure. These are the explorers, the pioneers seized with the wanderlust, those who …

Ibsen's Influence On British Dramatists, Elva Acklam Jul 1929

Ibsen's Influence On British Dramatists, Elva Acklam

Bachelors’ Theses

In preparing this thesis I found that one must have an understanding of philosophy, sociology, biology and economics to appreciate the modern drama, and in the reading of the plays I found my knowledge in these subjects broadened. The dramatists and their characters' views on these branches of learning are most interesting, especially those in Bernard Shaw's prefaces.

The labor of the essay was simplified when I found that the reading of a play of Ibsen's or the others gave almost as much pleasure as witnessing it on the stage. Copious stage directions giving character analysis, situations, and literary descriptions …

Cicero And Immortality: A Study Based On The First Tusculan Disputation, Marion Sullivan Jun 1929

Cicero And Immortality: A Study Based On The First Tusculan Disputation, Marion Sullivan

Bachelors’ Theses

In order to discover the real source and principle of his actions, we shall have to view somewhat superficially, however, that philosophy which Cicero professed to follow as the general view of his life. This, as he often declares, was drawn from the Academic Sect, winch derived its origin from Socrates, and its name from the famous gymnasium, or place of exercise, in the suburbs of Athens, called The Academy.

Romance And Walpole, Mary Mercedes Tintel Jun 1929

Romance And Walpole, Mary Mercedes Tintel

Bachelors’ Theses

In studying romantic literature we realize that ro¬ mance is not merely a nassing whim, but a lasting, fundamental trait in human nature. In some cases ro¬ mantic authors have nermitted their hearts to run away with their heads to such an extent, that sane readers have turned away in disgust at the wild extravagance of this false romanticism. But true romance is always with us. It is not a matter of any particular century, but a product of all times and of all nations. Our age is no exception to the rule. Among modern English writers who are inspired …

The Dramatic Technique Of Ben Jonson, Theodore James Hodan Jun 1929

The Dramatic Technique Of Ben Jonson, Theodore James Hodan

Bachelors’ Theses

"Barring Shakespeare, Jonson is by far the moat significant literary figure of his time,--- leaving be hind him a name in the popular drama, second alone to that of Shakespeare." In this vein does Felix E, Schelling speak of the master about whom this thesis is woven, Ben Jonson. In the course of this thesis we will endeavor to set forth the technique, in its various phases of the dramas of Jonson.

Dramatic Criticism: Its Place In The American Theater And A Discussion Of Its Exponents, Rowena M. Devine

Bachelors’ Theses

Criticism is as essential to the theater as it is to literature, art or music. It is a connecting link between the theater and the theater-goer. Most authorities today concede that without criticism the theater would wane in popularity.

Standards Of Criticism For The American Novel, Marie Dwyer Jan 1929

Standards Of Criticism For The American Novel, Marie Dwyer

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis has been worked out so that I shall have some criteria for judging novels. I have ventured to write about modern novelists about whom critics are not agreed; my interest is not so much in that they said of certain authors as it is in determining why they accept some and reject others, and what they use as their basis of judging.

The technique of the novel, and its approach to great art was developed in order to gain a feeling for the novel apart from any country or section.

If undue emphasis has been placed upon the …
