The Use Of Obsessions And Delusions As A Tragic Device In The Major Plays Of Eugene O'Neill, Ruth Bartlett Thomas

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This introductory chapter contains definitions of obsessions and delusions, and examines the validity of these ideas as tragic devices. It discusses obsessions from the point of view of Freud and Jung.

The major plays of Eugene O’Neill have been divided into three psychological types: the first type we shall call the statement-of-the-problem plays; the second, the simple anima plays; the third, the complex anima plays. These terms and divisions will be explained as we proceed.

Positivism In The Works Of George Eliot, Bernice Jones Jan 1941

Positivism In The Works Of George Eliot, Bernice Jones

Graduate Thesis Collection

This paper attempts to find in the facts of George Eliot's life the evidences of positive philosophy, to trace the philosophy to its logical basis and to show its influence on her work. There are many who say such a study is useless or at best unimportant, but I do not agree. I am not attempting to "piece out" an entire philosophy by combining fragmentary allusions I have found in her work. I am not disappointed to find her thought inconsistent, or mixed, or different at one period from another. There is no philosophical system that must not admit ambiguity …

Noel Coward's Contribution To The Comedy Of Manners., Clara-Marie Doughtry May 1940

Noel Coward's Contribution To The Comedy Of Manners., Clara-Marie Doughtry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An estimate of Noel Coward's contribution to the comedy of manners necessitates an understanding of: (1) the nature and the place of the comedy of manners in modern drama, (2) Noel Coward's background, and (3) an analysis of Noel Coward's formula for the comedy of manners. We find in the material relating to modern drama. little discussion of the comedy of manners. Occasionally plays may be mentioned as comedies of manners, but there is no discussion as to the specific nature of the comedy of manners in modern drama. The only book that discusses fully the comedy of manners in …

Silas Mitchell, Poet, Margaretha Strodthoff

Bachelors’ Theses

There was a man whose name was Luke. He was not a clergyman, he was a physician. He felt, however, that he had something to say about the Master which none of those other men had said. So he wrote the gospel of Luke, which many people regard as the best book in the Bible. "Many have undertaken to set forth in order the facts about Jesus Christ and it seemed good to me also to write", he said. There was another physician and "it seemed good to him also to write". This physician was Silas Weir Mitchell. He rose …

A Study Of The Interrelations Between Dos Passos' Personal Philosophy, Objectives, And Techniques And The Influence Of The Zeitgeist On Them, James R. Wilson Jan 1940

A Study Of The Interrelations Between Dos Passos' Personal Philosophy, Objectives, And Techniques And The Influence Of The Zeitgeist On Them, James R. Wilson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

For several reasons Dos Passos is important to the development of American literature. His novels, with their integrity, breadth, and architectonic form, are painted on a larger canvas than any other American writers. In Manhattan Transfer, his fourth novel, he attempted to portray the greatest metropolis in the world, New York City. He succeeded as well as anyone ever has. Then, refusing to rest on his cars, he went on to the trilogy U. S. A., which takes all of twentieth century American life as its subject. This is Dos Passos' epic of modern Americanlife, the most successful of the …

The Measurement Of Vocabulary Of High School Students : A Study Of The Reliability Of Existing Tests, George Wendell Kellogg Jul 1939

The Measurement Of Vocabulary Of High School Students : A Study Of The Reliability Of Existing Tests, George Wendell Kellogg

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

In view of the number of vocabulary tests that have been made in recent years and the resulting widespread use of estimates based on them, the question of whether or not a reliable absolute estimate of a person ' s vocabulary can be made from existing tests is of paramount importance . Before attacking the problem, it was necessary to define "an individual's vocabulary." It was decided that in this study vocabulary would mean not merely the number of words a person could use, but the total number of words the meanings of which he could recognize. A "reliable estimate" …
