Zora Neale Hurston’S Search For Identity In Moses, Man Of The Mountain, Joan E. Sebastian
Zora Neale Hurston’S Search For Identity In Moses, Man Of The Mountain, Joan E. Sebastian
Masters Theses
Zora Neale Hurston, Afro-American writer of the 1920s and 1930s, has gained critical recognition for her novels and studies about the Afro-American masses. Hurston, also an anthropologist and folklorist, worked directly with southern Afro-Americans through her research in both of these fields. Her folklore collecting journeys enabled her to see and to capture the cultural traditions and oral heritage of Afro-Americans. It was her search into the cultural traditions, moreover, that led her to find her own identity. Hurston, therefore, depicted her protagonists as searching for an identity in most of her novels, with this quest especially apparent in Moses, …

The Portrayal Of The European Immigrant In The Historical Fiction For Children And Young Adults, Gayle T. Wood
The Portrayal Of The European Immigrant In The Historical Fiction For Children And Young Adults, Gayle T. Wood
Graduate Research Papers
This research study used a content analysis technique to assess the portrayal of the European who emigrated to the United States from Europe between the years of 1832 and 1932. Portrayals were found in 15 works of historical fiction written for children or young adults and published after 1950 in the United States.
Descriptive occurrences in each book were examined for the realistic portrayal of the immigrant experience in six general areas: (1) the Americanization process, (2) the educational experience of the immigrant, (3) employment opportunities, (4) family relations, (5) conditions encountered during the emigration process, and (6) reasons for …

The Portrayal Of Employed Mothers In Children's Fiction, Karen Carstensen Appleton
The Portrayal Of Employed Mothers In Children's Fiction, Karen Carstensen Appleton
Graduate Research Papers
In American society today, mothers are joining the employment forces for economic purposes, and because they feel a need to fulfill their personal potentials or gain self-actualization. The portrayals of employed mothers in children's fiction should reflect the trends of society, as well as provide appropriate role models for children. The purpose of this study was to determine how employed mothers are portrayed in children's fiction. The researcher analyzed eighteen books of children's fiction by means of a checklist in order to determine if the majority of employed mothers are 1) working for economic purposes rather than for purposes of …

George Eliot And Friendship The Toast To The Immortal Memory, Ina Taylor
George Eliot And Friendship The Toast To The Immortal Memory, Ina Taylor
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
Before going on to my chosen subject I thought you might like to hear a little about this new biography of George Eliot. You could indeed be forgiven for saying, 'Not another biography of George Eliot'. A new study must come out most years, either in this country or in America and I would be the first to admit that the definitive biography by Gordon Haight will not be superseded for some time. So what more is there to say about the great lady?
Well, after reading Haight and others, I was struck by the fact that of George Eliot's …

Literature And The Question Of Philosophy [Review], Michael Fischer
Literature And The Question Of Philosophy [Review], Michael Fischer
English Faculty Research
However defined theoretically, literature and philosophy also designate two departments in most North American universities. The paths of these departments occasionally cross, say in a philosophy and literature course, then go their separate ways: toward logic, in the case of philosophy, and toward some variant of the still powerful New Criticism in literature departments, where poetry is considered as poetry and not as another thing. Combining literature and philosophy, or seeing them as always already intertwined, thus involves transgressing departmental boundaries and runs the risk of seeming dilettantish to those colleagues who remain within each discipline. Literature and the Question …
The Role Of Narrator In Selected Works Of Edgar Allan Poe, Frances M. Smith
The Role Of Narrator In Selected Works Of Edgar Allan Poe, Frances M. Smith
Theses & Honors Papers
This thesis focuses on the role of narrator in selected works of Edgar Allan Poe. The thesis finds that Poe exerts a lot of effort fashioning the narrator. He discredits his reliability to discourage a face-value credibility. He puts him in a dream state to give him access to his subconscious mind. He makes himself and other characters representative of the functioning of the inner mind. He creates deceptiveness in his nature and then makes him alert the reader to the deceptiveness in his nature and then makes him alert the reader to the deception so that the reader will …

Maggie Tullier's Thorny Wilderness: George Eliot's Use Of Natural And Social Environment To Develop The Character Of The Heroine In "The Mill On The Floss", Nelle Mcfather
Theses & Honors Papers
During this writer's year of pursuit of the Master of Arts degree in English, the critical catechism has been applied to the work being studied in every class: "Does this work stand up to the test of time and, if so, why?" The first part of the question can be glibly answered by the fact that the work in question is being read and taught in modern classrooms, or is included on a current suggested reading list. The second part of the question, the "why?" is more complex. What makes one "out-dated" novel gather dust on an obscure shelf while …
Mark Twain's Uses Of Suffering In The Writer-Character-Reader Triad, Virginia Armiger Grant
Mark Twain's Uses Of Suffering In The Writer-Character-Reader Triad, Virginia Armiger Grant
Theses & Honors Papers
This thesis studies Mark Twain’s uses of suffering in the writer character reader triad. In the book Huckleberry Finn, Twain himself seems to identify more closely with Huck than he does with Tom, as evidenced by the first person narrative in Finn and the more serious, more carefully developed autobiographical incidents in that book. Perhaps because Twain’s later life was so bleak and unhappy, he poured all of his self-defeat and pessimism into his thoughts for Huck’s old age.
D.H. Lawrence's Philosophy Of Human Relationships As Seen In Four Novels, Jacqueline Eachus
D.H. Lawrence's Philosophy Of Human Relationships As Seen In Four Novels, Jacqueline Eachus
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The growth of an individual into mature selfhood is the primary basis of the Lawrentian relationship. Lawrence describes a mystical kind of rebirth of the self into a deeper level of the unconscious. He says that one should explore the impulses and desires of the unconscious in order to find a deeper, more fulfilled self. Ursula of The Rainbow and Paul of Sons and Lovers are the characters who most successfully begin this growth into separate selfhood.
According to Lawrence the journey into the unconscious is to be accomplished through sensual experiences. He mistrusts the intellect because he feels that …

Comparative Instructor Attitudes Toward College Level English And Mathematics Experiences For Gifted High School Students, Bruce Vickers
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Samples derived from a mailed questionnaire were compared. The sample represented high school, community college and university instructors of mathematics and English. The Kentucky public schools sampled were equally represented among high school, community colleges and universities. The research indicated that of those instructors sampled a very high percentage (97.7%) feel that those high school students shown to be academically gifted would benefit from a college experience before high school graduation. The attitudes of those instructors sampled indicated that multiple criteria – grades, recommendations, standardized test scores and personal interview – were considered the preferred method of selection (82.5%). The …
A New Poem By Samuel Taylor Coleridge, James C. Mckusick
A New Poem By Samuel Taylor Coleridge, James C. Mckusick
English Faculty Publications
The poem published here is transcribed from an original holograph manuscript in the Berg Collection of the New York Public Library. The poem is a fragmentary verse translation of the Song of Deborah (from Judges 5). Its existence has been known to Coleridge scholars for several years, and its authenticity seems unquestionable. Kathleen Coburn mentions it in her edition of Coleridge's Notebooks: "The ms was with Coleridge's 'German Journal' of 1798-9 on acquisition by the library, but whether only accidentally there is not known. It appears to be fairly early." To this remark I can add my own observation that …
Honoring The Farm: Identity And Meaning In Personal Narratives, Jeannie Banks Thomas
Honoring The Farm: Identity And Meaning In Personal Narratives, Jeannie Banks Thomas
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This thesis employs the literary folklorist methodology to explore personal narratives. Personal narratives told by Elizabeth (Beth) Wyatt Winn were analyzed. It was discovered that these narratives provide an eyewitness account of history, reveal world views, and encapsulate experiences into values and personal meanings. The depth of meaning found in Elizabeth (Beth) Wyatt Winn's personal narratives illustrates the importance of personal narratives in historical research and historical re-creation and simulation.
Appendices include several oral interviews containing personal narratives.

The Geometry Of James Joyce's Ulysses: From Pythagoras To Poincaré: Joyce's Use Of Geometry For Structure, Metaphor, And Theme, Susan Sutliff Brown
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The extensive, previously unrecognized, use James Joyce made of contemporaneous geometric concepts for structure, metaphor, and theme in Ulysses provides new keys to how Joyce, following the model of his predecessors and contemporaries in Cubism, responded to the revolutions in aesthetics and physics which marked his intellectual milieu. As an examination of pre-publication materials reveals, during the six months before February 2, 1922, Joyce manipulated the pagination of the Ulysses placards and page proofs to impose geometric aesthetic proportions on the overall text and within individual episodes. Most significantly, Joyce aesthetically proportioned the pagination of the disparate eleven "initial style" …

Zora Neale Hurston And The Emergence Of Self, Cheryl Y. Williams
Zora Neale Hurston And The Emergence Of Self, Cheryl Y. Williams
Honors Theses
Abraham Maslow in his work From The Farther Reaches of Human Nature made the statement:
Every human being has (two) sets of forces within him. One set clings to safety and defensiveness out of fear, tending to regress backward, hanging to the past, afraid to grow... afraid of independence, freedom and separateness. The other set of forces impels him forward toward wholeness of Self and uniqueness of Self, toward full functioning of all his capacities, toward confidence in the face of the external world at the same time that he can accept his deepest, real, unconscious Self (45-6).
What makes …
