A Cave Of Their Own: A Comparative Examination Of Recurring Social And Psychological Themes In Gothic Fiction And Gothic Youth Subculture Through The Song Lyrics And Fiction Of Nick Cave, Bradley M. Hunter

Theses : Honours

The aim of this thesis is to examine the Gothic phenomenon as it pertains to late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century fiction, and extrapolate its social and psychological concerns as they relate to the Gothic revival in the late nineteenth-century Decadent movement and late twentieth-century gothic subculture. This examination focuses on recurrent social and psychological themes in eighteenth/nineteenth-century Gothic fiction, the late nineteenth-century Decadent movement and twentieth-century gothic music and subculture, which, in turn, are compared to the themes and motifs of the song lyrics and fiction of Nick Cave. Within this context, the recurring theme of the psychological exploration of …

The Calamus Root: American Gay Poetry Since World War Ii, Walter Ralph Holland Jan 1998

The Calamus Root: American Gay Poetry Since World War Ii, Walter Ralph Holland

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation argues that there is a clear gay poetic tradition dating back to nineteenth century Europe, and it describes an historical taxonomy for gay poetry in America since 1945 by reference to its characteristic themes, influences and leading figures. After a brief discussion of early precursors such as Paul Verlaine, Arthur Rimbaud, Walt Whitman, C. P. Cavafy, Hart Crane, Langston Hughes and W. H. Auden, the dissertation traces, through close explication of texts, the works of Harold Norse, Allen Ginsberg, Tennessee Williams, Frank O'Hara, Adrian Stanford, Richard Howard, Alfred Corn and Essex Hemphill. The influences on such poets of …

Reflection/Reflected The Construction Of Female Subjectivity In Elizabeth Bowen's The Last September And The Death Of The Heart, Laura Bartlett Dec 1997

Reflection/Reflected The Construction Of Female Subjectivity In Elizabeth Bowen's The Last September And The Death Of The Heart, Laura Bartlett

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

As I read Elizabeth Bowen's The Last September and The Death of the Heart, questions arose, persisted, and remained unanswered until I undertook the project of applying poststructuralist theories to these novels. Reading The Last September, I puzzled over the female protagonist's relationship to an ancillary character, which Bowen repeatedly represents in terms of the father-daughter relationship. Reading both The Last September and The Death of the Heart, I was struck by the fact that although Bowen is typically categorized as a "classical realist," she embarks upon the quest of depicting the identity construction of two female adolescents but abandons …

Knowledge And Representation In The Ambassadors: Strether's Discriminating Gaze, Phyllis E. Vanslyck Oct 1997

Knowledge And Representation In The Ambassadors: Strether's Discriminating Gaze, Phyllis E. Vanslyck

Publications and Research

I propose a radically new reading of Lambert Strether's subjectivity in Henry James's The Ambassadors, one that challenges critical readings to date and suggests that Strether's journey reflects a tacit but very definite confrontation with the fundamental illusion of the core self. As he follows the trajectory of his desire, initially through identification with the "masculine" identity of Chad Newsome, Strether comes to see the limitations of conventional notions of masculinity. He discovers that the freedom he seeks is not to be found in the illusion of power characterized by masculine control and repression but rather in the vulnerable acceptance …

Computer Technology In Writing Centers: Ways To Increase Their Effectiveness In The Instruction Of Freshman English And Intercurricular Studies, Christopher King Aug 1997

Computer Technology In Writing Centers: Ways To Increase Their Effectiveness In The Instruction Of Freshman English And Intercurricular Studies, Christopher King

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Creating a space in Room 127 that is increasingly vital to English 100 is more complicated than just having students write on computers. To maximize our potentials in Room 127, we must deal with a variety of aspects — the history of the Writing Center, its functions, perceptions of it, pedagogies related to it, and its space, and our goals, for example ~ before we simply sit our freshman in front of computers and give them a writing prompt. Chapter One will provide a brief history of what Room 127's function has been. This review is necessary so that we …

My Psychologist, My Psychiatrist, Fred G. Leebron

English Faculty Publications

I could not distinguish between them except by what we did. I was ten, then eleven. I would not ride the school bus. I always slunk home saying I missed it. I made my mother come to school with me every day, and sit in the lobby so I could wave to her during recess and class changes. In the evenings my father would come home from work, hear my mother's report, and storm upstairs, his weight pounding on the hardwood steps. I would be out of breath with crying, my head in the pillow, waiting to feel what he …

"Visions Of Me In The Whitest Raw Light": Assimilation And Doxic Whiteness In Chang-Rae Lee's 'Native Speaker', Tim Engles

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

In Chang-rae Lee's first novel, 'Native Speaker,' the protagonist is jolted by the death of his son and the subsequent departure of his wife into intensification of a lifelong identity crisis. The book's guiding metaphor, figured in Henry Park's job as a spy, cleverly elucidates the immigrant's stance as a watchful outsider in American society, but Henry's double life also figures largely in his equally representative struggles to decide for himself what kind of person he is. As a child of immigrant parents, Henry is, in Pierre Bourdieu's useful terms, endowed with a bifurcated "habitus," two sets of culturally induced …

"The Holy Grail": An Epic Spiritual Quest For Modern Times By Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Rodney Llyn Shetler Jun 1997

"The Holy Grail": An Epic Spiritual Quest For Modern Times By Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Rodney Llyn Shetler

Theses & Honors Papers

This thesis will explore the characters and situations presented by Tennyson in "The Holy Grail" to reveal their human qualities and frailties for the purposes of examination and reflection in order to gain a greater understanding of spirituality . For Tennyson himself said that, "My meaning in the Idyll s of the King was spiritual. I took the legendary stories of the Round Table as illustrations. I intended Arthur to represent the Ideal Soul of Man coming into contact with the warring elements of the flesh" (qtd. in Ricks 671). Hallam Tennyson, as well, observes that "Throughout the …
