"Anything Dead Coming Back To Life Hurts": Ghosts And Memory In Hamlet And Beloved, Rebecca Boyd Aug 1998

"Anything Dead Coming Back To Life Hurts": Ghosts And Memory In Hamlet And Beloved, Rebecca Boyd

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Ghost stories are an ingrained part of most cultures because, typically, humans must be forced to confront those elements of their individual and communal past that they would prefer to ignore. Accordingly, ghosts have embodied weaknesses and hidden evils that must be assimilated and transcended, and writers have embroidered a variety of subtexts upon the traditional fabric of ghostlore. Specifically, both William Shakespeare's Hamlet and Toni Morrison's Beloved employ ghosts as symbols of man's archetypal desire to hide his past. A careful examination of the texts in these ghost stories, of the cultural folklore included, and of the ghosts' influence …

Ngugi Wa Thiong’O., John C. Hawley Jul 1998

Ngugi Wa Thiong’O., John C. Hawley

English

Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o was born the fifth child of the third of his father's four wives; he had twenty-seven siblings. The family lived in Kamiriithu Village, twelve miles northeast of Nairobi, Kenya. His father, Thiong'o wa Nducu, was a peasant farmer dispossessed by the British Imperial Land Act of 1915 and therefore forced to become a squatter on property meted out to one of the few native Africans who had profited from the act. His father's condition was similar to that of most of the Kikuyu with whom Ngũgĩ grew up.

Guidelines For Alternative Spring Break, Christopher A. Meyer

Honors Theses

According to the 1997 Statistical Abstract of the United States, some 93 million Americans - 48.8% of the nation's adults - volunteered an average of 4.2 hours a week in 1995, donating time and talents to benefit various worthy causes. These "causes" ranged from churches to museums to schools, from private arrangements to national (even international) organizations. And the work, from building houses to holding hands to cleaning homes to answering tax questions, covered every possible talent and ability that volunteers had to offer.

Effect Of Item Clarity And Probability Of Item Endorsement On Response Latencies On Personality Test Items, James R. Kinney May 1998

Effect Of Item Clarity And Probability Of Item Endorsement On Response Latencies On Personality Test Items, James R. Kinney

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study, regression analysis was used to examine the affects of item clarity and probability of endorsement on response latencies of 60 undergraduates responding on personality test items from the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16 Personality Factor test) (Cattell, Eber, & Tatsuoka, 1970, 5th Edition). Response latencies to personality test items, though frequently studied, have yet to be operationally utilized in the interpretation of personality tests. Forty-four items from the 16 Personality Factor test were selected. Each item from the original test was rated for clarity and matched with an emotionally neutral statement with an equivalent number of words. …

The listing is selective; it makes no attempt to include all research and research-related articles that appeared in the period tinder review. Comments on the bibliography and suggestions about items for inclusion may be directed to the bibliography editors. We encourage you to send your …

"They Always Leave Us’: Lord Jim, Colonialist Discourse, And Conrad's Magic Naturalism, Richard Ruppel Apr 1998

"They Always Leave Us’: Lord Jim, Colonialist Discourse, And Conrad's Magic Naturalism, Richard Ruppel

English Faculty Articles and Research

"Today, this information about Jewel's origins and her great fear that Jim will desert her because he is white and she is not must be gleaned rather painstakingly from the novel. But Conrad's contemporary readers would have understood her situation and her fear immediately, for the instability of white/non-white romances is a very common trope of late-nineteenth century colonialist fiction. In colonialist stories, the white man always leaves, and the non-white woman often knows that he will."

Orts 46, 1998, The George Macdonald Society

Orts: The George MacDonald Society Newsletter

Adela workshops explore the penetrating spiritual/psychological insights of MacDonald's fairy tales and seek to discover how they can be put to direct practical use in everyday situations. Following the very successful workshop on Adela Cathcart held in Massachusetts in 1995 we hope to hold a similar workshop focusing on The Lost Princess (The Wise Woman) in New Hampshire or Maine in July 1998. Workshops actively involve all participants, there are no lectures. The Lost Princess is particularly suited for such an approach. MacDonald has written the story in such a way that it is impossible for readers not to imagine …

Narrative Voicings In The Novels Of Roddy Doyle, Larry Poe Jan 1998

Narrative Voicings In The Novels Of Roddy Doyle, Larry Poe

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Scholars have generally ignored Irish novelist and playwright Roddy Doyle. Little attention has been paid to his narrative techniques or to his development as a novelist. In the American academy, thus far, only one dissertation concerning Doyle’s novels has appeared, written in 1996, by Caramine White, at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. White notes that her dissertation is the first on Doyle and “its basic purpose will be to introduce the novels to the reading public and to convince the reading public that Doyle, although a very popular artist, is also a gifted writer who should be taken …

Contemporary Appalachian Picture Books, Judy A. Teaford Jan 1998

Contemporary Appalachian Picture Books, Judy A. Teaford

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Modern children’s literature stresses individualism and multiculturalism. The first concerns the push in children’s literature to place more emphasis on developing a child’s individuality, to celebrate individual triumph rather than communal action. This trend seems to have succeeded in its goal. As Perry Nodelman states in The Pleasures of Children’s Literature, “Surprisingly few texts for children celebrate the value of groups of people working together as equals as opposed to the power of individuals controlling groups” (121- 122). The second, and more recent trend, concerns what Ron Jobe and many other critics of children’s literature believe to be the goal …

The Damnation Of Bryan Dalyrimpleand Theron Ware: F. Scott Fitzgerald's Debt To Harold Frederic, William Jolliff Jan 1998

The Damnation Of Bryan Dalyrimpleand Theron Ware: F. Scott Fitzgerald's Debt To Harold Frederic, William Jolliff

Faculty Publications - Department of English

F. Scott Fitzgerald's debt to the fin de siecle American naturalists is well known. Princetonian Amory Blaine gives the most famous suggestion of the influence in This Side of Paradise when he finds himself "rather surprised by his discovery through a critic named Mencken of several excellent American novels: 'Vandover and the Brute,' 'The Damnation of Theron Ware,' and 'Jennie Gerhardt'" (209). Henry Dan Piper notes that "Fitzgerald wrote this particular passage during the summer of 1919, when he revised his novel for the last time. It is likely that he had heard about all three books very recently" ("Norris …
