Relationship Counseling For The U.S.: Understanding White America's Role In Asian American Experiences, Alison N. Lawrence
Relationship Counseling For The U.S.: Understanding White America's Role In Asian American Experiences, Alison N. Lawrence
Tredway Library Prize for First-Year Research
This paper explores the relationship between White Americans and Asian Americans in an effort to discover the root of the difficulties that first and second generation Asian Americans experience while attempting to integrate into American society. Through an analysis of perspectives from Asian American literature as well as historical and current events, it highlights the racist systems that are ingrained in our everyday lives, continuously reminding Asian Americans that they are out of place in their own country. It concludes with a discussion of White America's necessary role in dismantling these systems, and offers strategies to create a more welcoming …
Describing The Dress Of Women: Author’S Notes On The Development Of Gender, Cassandra B. Tan
Describing The Dress Of Women: Author’S Notes On The Development Of Gender, Cassandra B. Tan
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis is an examination of how authors of the late Victorian and early Twentieth Century describe the embodied and mental effects of the nature of women’s clothing through works of fiction and nonfiction. Through this analysis, I argue that clothing serves as a mechanism to oppress women by eliminating concrete and philosophical access to wealth and necessities as well as by instigating acts of violence upon a developing body through stricture and hygiene. I examine the ways that feminine dress, from youth through adulthood, shapes the way women view themselves, and in turn has a reciprocal effect on how …
Metacognitive Self-Evaluation Techniques In Efl Classrooms, Rula J. Yazigy
Metacognitive Self-Evaluation Techniques In Efl Classrooms, Rula J. Yazigy
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
This study aims to examine whether the use of metacognitive self-assessment helps English as a foreign language (EFL) students to improve their metacognition. The study implemented an intervention technique on 540 students in Grades Four to Nine in a private school in Beirut. Students had to evaluate their performance on English tests in relation to their study skills and preparation. The four EFL teachers included students' study skills self-evaluation statements at the end of the English tests in the first term of 2019-2020 and responded to five questions to evaluate the intervention. Their responses indicated that younger learners were more …
Effective Language Teachers’ Characteristics As Perceived By English Language Private Institutes’ Administrators In Iran, Negar Yazdanipour, Mehrnoush Fakharzadeh
Effective Language Teachers’ Characteristics As Perceived By English Language Private Institutes’ Administrators In Iran, Negar Yazdanipour, Mehrnoush Fakharzadeh
The Qualitative Report
Recruiting wisely from the available supply of teachers is one of the instructional roles of school administrators. Their hiring and retaining decisions, among other things, can influence learners' achievements. The number of studies examining the features of effective language teachers in the eyes of administrators is limited. Therefore, the present study was designed to examine how effective language teachers are perceived by administrators of English Private Language Institutes in Iran. To this end, 27 male and female administrators were selected and interviewed. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the narrative data. The results of coding revealed several characteristics of effective …
Beauvoir In Time, Meryl Altman
Beauvoir In Time, Meryl Altman
English Faculty publications
Beauvoir in Time situates Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex in the historical context of its writing and in later contexts of its international reception, from then till now. The book takes up three aspects of Beauvoir's work more recent feminists find embarrassing: "bad sex," "dated" views about lesbians, and intersections with race and class. Through close reading of Beauvoir's writing in many genres, alongside contemporaneous discourses (good and bad novels in French and English, outmoded psychoanalytic and sexological authorities, ethnographic surrealism, the writing of Richard Wright and Franz Fanon), and in light of her travels to the U.S. and …
The Uses Of Character: Modernism And The Politics Of Characterization, Jared Matthew Klemp
The Uses Of Character: Modernism And The Politics Of Characterization, Jared Matthew Klemp
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
In The Uses of Character: Modernism and the Politics of Characterization, I analyze experiments with character in the British and Irish fiction of the early twentieth century. I argue that, though they are frequently treated as monolithic and apolitical, such experiments are heterogenous attempts to rehabilitate or revise national identities in response to historical and political pressures. Taking two emblematic figures of high modernism, James Joyce and Virginia Woolf, and another figure who is frequently left out of discussions of modernism, Flann O’Brien, I demonstrate that a shift in the construction of character reveals a shift in the author’s relationship …
"Saint Galadriel?: J.R.R. Tolkien As The Hagiographer Of Middle-Earth", Jane Beal Phd
"Saint Galadriel?: J.R.R. Tolkien As The Hagiographer Of Middle-Earth", Jane Beal Phd
Journal of Tolkien Research
Abstract: Galadriel is perceived in different, sometimes contradictory ways both within the world of Middle-earth and the world of Tolkien scholarship. In some ways, she is a liminal figure, on the threshold between Middle-earth and Valinor, and between secular and sacred influences from the primary world Tolkien actually lived in. One neglected context that may help readers to understand Tolkien’s characterization of Galadriel is the medieval cult of the saints.
The cult of the saints provides specific practices and beliefs that shaped how Tolkien consciously characterized Galadriel as saint-like, especially in terms of her beauty, holiness, and power. Her saintliness …

Let’S Get Graphic: The Integration Of Visual Representations To Demonstrate Learning, Courtneay Kelly
Let’S Get Graphic: The Integration Of Visual Representations To Demonstrate Learning, Courtneay Kelly
Virginia English Journal
Students derive meaning from knowledge that is presented to them in various ways. An instructor may present information through different modalities, though direct verbal instruction is the mode most often employed (Beesley & Apthorp, 2010). Research indicates that, when information is constructed through the use of visual representations, students gain deeper and more enduring understanding of the content (Jewitt, 2008; Kress, 1997). This article provides an explanation and definition of nonlinguistic and linguistic visual representations, a review of what research indicates in the integration of them, and examples of the inclusion of concept-based visual representations in a college course that …

Drug Free America: The Ethics And Politics Of Drugs In Contemporary American Literature, Kevin Pickard
Drug Free America: The Ethics And Politics Of Drugs In Contemporary American Literature, Kevin Pickard
English Theses and Dissertations
The utopian vision behind the so-called War on Drugs was that, as with other wars, we might sacrifice some amount of individual freedom in order to gain a larger freedom. In this case, the larger freedom was what Nancy Reagan called a “drug free America.” Thus, the War on Drugs era (from roughly 1970 to the present) aligns historically yet exists in tension with what scholars have called the neoliberal era, wherein individual freedom is paramount, and moral, political, and economic responsibility is left to the individual. This dissertation asks what the depictions of drug use in literature from this …
The Face Of God: Imaginary Space In Pickle Green, Taylor Flickinger
The Face Of God: Imaginary Space In Pickle Green, Taylor Flickinger
Undergraduate Honors Theses
A foundational premise of adaptation theory is that novels, films, theater, and any other storytelling medium can tell the same story but must do so differently. That is, each medium has its own distinct “language” with varying strengths and weaknesses inherent to its form. However, adaptation theorists have recently started pushing back on the idea that a film “can’t” do the same things as a novel, for example, arguing instead that the language of film and literature is more a result of “habits that are grounded in the history of fashion, taste, and analysis rather than in any specific technical …
Lessons From Hybridity: A Look Into The Coupling Of Image And Text In Karen Tei Yamashita’S Letters To Memory, Claudia Rankine’S Citizen: An American Lyric, And Ilya Kaminsky’S Deaf Republic, Elizabeth Chen
English (MA) Theses
The spoken and written word has always been a platform for voices to be heard, but being heard is not always enough. This thesis focuses on the use of hybrid forms in recent publications that address this issue, placing images alongside the written word, letting readers also personally visualize and interpret a perspective different from their own. Specifically, it will look into three examples of hybrid literary works: the placement of photographs beside epistolary writing in Karen Tei Yamashita‘s Letters to Memory (2017), the blend of visual art and lyric prose poetryfound in Citizen: An American Lyric(2014) by Claudia Rankine, …

Space Opera: The Aesthetics Of Personhood In The Works And Worlds Of Philip K. Dick, Gabriel Francis Mamola
Space Opera: The Aesthetics Of Personhood In The Works And Worlds Of Philip K. Dick, Gabriel Francis Mamola
English Dissertations - Archive
In this dissertation, I examine the major novels of science fiction writer Philip K. Dick in light of his non-fictional and speculatively mystical writings. After establishing an approach to science fiction in general and Dick in particular, grounded in the Aristotelian mimetic theory of Stephen Halliwell and the ambient rhetorical theory of Thomas Rickert, I argue that Dick came more and more, as his career progressed and his body of work developed, to understand his oeuvre as a unified art-work—unified not only by its themes but by the fictional world it portrayed. More to the point, I argue that Dick’s …
Wraiths And White Men: The Impact Of Privilege On Paranormal Reality Television, Antares Russell Leask
Wraiths And White Men: The Impact Of Privilege On Paranormal Reality Television, Antares Russell Leask
English Dissertations - Archive
Modern paranormal TV walks the fine line between infotainment and propaganda that older white men are rational while marginalized communities, such as youths, lower social classes, women, and minorities are hysterical and gullible. White privilege is performed and glorified in reality paranormal television at the expense of marginalized groups. This view is inherently classist/racist/sexist/homophobic and does not reflect prevailing cultural norms, but points to a reemergence of the prejudiced idea that belief in the supernatural is a mark of cultural inferiority. Throughout history, marginalized groups have been considered those more prone to superstition, so with the renewed rise in racist …
Happily-Ever-After: An Exploration Of Nineteenth-Century Laws, Marriage, And African-American Representation, Sarah Clayburn
Happily-Ever-After: An Exploration Of Nineteenth-Century Laws, Marriage, And African-American Representation, Sarah Clayburn
English Theses - Archive
This thesis moves beyond the moral messages of true womanhood found in eighteenth century British-American sentimental novels to examine the alternative lessons taught in nineteenth century African-American literature. In doing so, I explore the relationship between laws, race, and literature to investigate complex questions such as: what moral lessons about the institution of marriage are conveyed in early African-American novels? How did early American laws and policies affect these moral lessons? Lastly, how have marriage, laws, and traditions affected the representation of African-American characters in novels and shaped identities within African-American communities? Through the lens of critical race theory, feminist …
Architecture Of The Mind : Narrative Time And Mental Space In The Graduate, Catch-22, And Carnal Knowledge, Monica Cecilia Winston
Architecture Of The Mind : Narrative Time And Mental Space In The Graduate, Catch-22, And Carnal Knowledge, Monica Cecilia Winston
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
This thesis explores three of director Mike Nichols’s films produced during the New Hollywood period—The Graduate (1967), Catch-22 (1970), and Carnal Knowledge (1971)—in an effort to trace Nichols’s auteur signature as it relates to the depiction of the protagonist’s subjectivity and renders post-war male anxiety and existential dread. In addition to discussing formal film technique used to depict the mental space of the protagonist, how these subjective sequences are implemented in the film bears implications on the narrative form and situates Nichols alongside other New Hollywood directors who were influenced by art cinema. This analysis, like those posited by other …

The Impact Of Occupational Self-Efficacy On Job Performance, Kaeley A. Tener
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
From business-related literature, the occupational-self efficacy (OSE) theory has been used to explain employee confidence, motivation, success, or lack of success when used in conjunction with measurable training or evaluation. The presence and effects of OSE have been seen in various occupational sectors and industries. For Human Resources practitioners, utilizing the concepts of OSE in the workforce is more than just training or communication. The present study analyzed the presence and effects of OSE on an online student population at a technical college in a Midwestern University. The results from frequency, correlation, and cross-tabulation tests reveal that levels of OSE …
Performing Authenticity In The 19th-Century Short Story: Walter Benjamin, James Hogg, And The Spy, Duncan Hotchkiss
Performing Authenticity In The 19th-Century Short Story: Walter Benjamin, James Hogg, And The Spy, Duncan Hotchkiss
Studies in Scottish Literature
Discusses periodical short stories by the Scottish writer James Hogg (1770-1835), and his periodical The Spy, arguing that these textually perform oral story-telling features within the print medium, problematize Walter Benjamin’s distinction between traditional oral storytelling and the printed short story as vanguard of modernity, and show the periodical short story as a form embodies modernity while performing tradition.

Joe Corrie’S In Time O’ Strife, The General Strike Of 1926, And The Impasse Of Insurgent Masculinity, Paul Malgrati
Studies in Scottish Literature
Examines the ex-miner and labour journalist Joe Corrie's three-act play In Time o’ Strife, set in West Fife ("the most significant working-class play written about the 1926 General Strike"), setting it in the context of Corrie's writing career, and exploring the psychological, familial, and political conflicts, including conflicts of gender roles, which it dramatizes.
"Gazing On Vacancy" : Charlotte Bronte's Critical Portrayal Of Church Life In Shirley, Emily Pataki Hamburger
"Gazing On Vacancy" : Charlotte Bronte's Critical Portrayal Of Church Life In Shirley, Emily Pataki Hamburger
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
This study endeavors to explore how the novelist Charlotte Brontë preferred inner religious experience to institutional religious conformity in her own life and how she promoted her own unique spiritual style in her novel Shirley (1849). Bronte was brought up in a religious home in an era obsessed with religion. Christianity seemed to have a stranglehold over small and large societal matters in Yorkshire, England where Shirley is set, but yet something within the spiritual community was lacking. The Luddite revolutions occurring in Yorkshire are a backdrop to the interior revolutions taking place in the minds of the characters Caroline …
An Apology For The Villain-Hero : A Study Of Christopher Marlowe’S Tragic Works, Yue Zhu
An Apology For The Villain-Hero : A Study Of Christopher Marlowe’S Tragic Works, Yue Zhu
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Suffering and death are the basic human conditions, hence the importance of the cognitive function and value of tragic art that re-presents suffering and death on stage. Aristotle’s Poetics is the first theoretical work in the history of Western aesthetics to comprehensively discuss the topic of tragedy. In answer to Plato’s criticism of dramatic art, Aristotle argues that tragedy “effects through pity and fear the catharsis of such emotions”, which are best aroused by the spectacle of a moderately good man who falls into misery not through vice but through some hamartia. By evocation of such passions, our emotions are …
The Ego At An Impasse: Aesthetic Empathy And The Abject D’Art In Fin De Siècle Supernatural Fiction, Leandra E. Binder
The Ego At An Impasse: Aesthetic Empathy And The Abject D’Art In Fin De Siècle Supernatural Fiction, Leandra E. Binder
English Language and Literature ETDs
This dissertation examines the symbol of an art object which represents a corpse or dead person’s identity, what I call the abject d’art, as it appears in fin de siècle supernatural fiction by Vernon Lee (Violet Paget) to identify late Victorian notions of Kristevan abjection, avant la lettre. Lee’s aesthetic philosophy informs her use of the abject d’art, especially her examination of the empathetic process as part of aesthetics to explain how individuals represent and respond to objects mentally and emotionally. Through her analysis of empathy, Lee identifies the ego as a fallible moderator of an individual’s …
Sex, Lies, And Murder: Feminized Detective Fiction And The English Estate Novel, Meaghan Lanctot
Sex, Lies, And Murder: Feminized Detective Fiction And The English Estate Novel, Meaghan Lanctot
The Criterion
In Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca and Ian McEwan’s Atonement, the protagonists unravel the events of egregious crimes and their own complicity with the central tragedies. Set against the backdrop of crumbling English estates, the crimes highlight the erosion of the British ruling class at the onset of the 20th century. The unnamed narrator of Rebecca and Briony, the narrator of Atonement, are bound by their youth, age, and gender in their respective investigations into the sinister events that plague the history of Manderley and the Tallis estate, respectively. We see how the English estate is a hotbed of illicit …
The Magic Of Love: Love Magic In Medieval Romance, Dalicia Raymond
The Magic Of Love: Love Magic In Medieval Romance, Dalicia Raymond
English Language and Literature ETDs
This project examines authorial representations of the morality of three functions of love magic: to induce, to disrupt, and to facilitate love in twelfth- through fifteenth-century Middle High German, Old French, and Middle English romances. Using a cultural studies approach with close textual analysis and informed by gender studies, it investigates medieval romance authors’ discomfort with love inducing magic and asserts that this discomfort is a response to the magic’s violation of free will, a central tenet of medieval theology. I find that authors condemn love inducing magic but mark specific instances acceptable through explicit clarification of divine approval. Love …

The Storying Of Colombian Writing Centers, Jennifer Erin Pretzer
Masters Theses
Using the results from a study conducted on Colombian writing centers, this thesis applies principles from narrative theory to posit a grand narrative for Colombian writing center professionals. The study was modeled on one Jackie Grutsch McKinney used to examine US writing center professionals’ descriptions of their work, and the thesis includes a comparison with her results. Respondents were asked to answer seven questions, two of which were multiple choice and five of which were short answer. The questions asked respondents to describe their tutoring staff composition, their center’s operations, writing centers in general, and ways their center resembles and …
Originality, Decorum, And Fantastic Sight In Dostoevsky's The Idiot, Richard A. Decker
Originality, Decorum, And Fantastic Sight In Dostoevsky's The Idiot, Richard A. Decker
Masters Theses
Fyodor Dostoevsky’s “fantastic realism” penetrates reality’s surface to reveal what he refers to as the “moral center” of reality and, in the process, transfigures readers. In Dostoevsky’s The Idiot, the novel’s main protagonist, Prince Lev Nikolaevich Myshkin, embodies this fantastic realism. This process provides Myshkin with a “fantastic sight” that allows him to see past the immorality of the manners—or “feigned decorum”—of Russian society as represented in the novel. In so doing, Myshkin serves his peers as a “Nouwenian minister,” classifying him as a “wounded healer” archetype as presented in Henri J. M. Nouwen’s The Wounded Healer. This …
