"The Decades Have Wings": Esteemed Lit Mag Celebrates 50 Years In Print; Review Of Tampa Review, Winter 2016, E. Ce Miller
The Review Review
By its fiftieth issue, you expect a literary magazine to know what it’s doing—and Tampa Review does. As Florida’s oldest literary journal, founded in 1964 and housed at The University of Tampa, Tampa Review celebrated their fiftieth anniversary this winter with a slender, slick and glossy hardcover collection of visual art, fiction, nonfiction and poetry informed by the spirit of the American Arts and Crafts Movement. The Light of Islam
The following article deals with the concept analysis in the literary dialogue from the perspective of Cognitive and Cultural linguistics. Cognitive and Cultural linguistics are the modern trends of Linguistics as a result of anthropocentric paradigm to language. In this approach, the interaction between the language and human is the main basis of this paradigm. Responding To Xenophobia: Politics, Populisms And Our Teaching, Phyllis E. Vanslyck
Responding To Xenophobia: Politics, Populisms And Our Teaching, Phyllis E. Vanslyck
Publications and Research
This essay explores ways faculty in the humanities may guide students through current manifestations of populism, specifically, this movement’s encouragement of xenophobia. As a member of an English department at a public community college in the United States, I argue, first, that community college students, who often have deep personal connections to the experiences of immigrants, may respond to the anti-immigrant rhetoric in useful and provocative ways. Second, I suggest that the related history of anti-immigration sentiment in American politics since the beginning of the 20th century can provide students with a powerful context for understanding xenophobia today. Third, I …

The Effect Mental Health Portrayals In Television Shows Have On Viewers, Cade Kinzel
The Effect Mental Health Portrayals In Television Shows Have On Viewers, Cade Kinzel
Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
The goal of this study was to research the connections between portrayals in television shows and real-life people with mental health conditions. In addition, another purpose was to conclude whether my initial thoughts, which include believing a minimal numbers of TV shows contain any positive effect on viewer mental health, were supported. Misperceptions about mental health, including a justified feeling to hide mental conditions, judge others for theirs, or use it as a way for humor, are often given in television shows when mental health is included in the story (Smith, et al. 2019). I created a blog that revolved …
Sensitive Plants And Senseless Weeds: Plants, Consciousness, And Elizabeth Kent, Leila Walker
Sensitive Plants And Senseless Weeds: Plants, Consciousness, And Elizabeth Kent, Leila Walker
Publications and Research
When a team of researchers in 2018 found that plants exposed to anesthesia appeared to lose consciousness, the press reported that plants might have a consciousness to lose. The ensuing debate revealed a gap between scientific and literary approaches to human and nonhuman consciousness that this article traces back to the botanical writing of the Romantic period. These concerns, I argue, are central to Elizabeth Kent’s Flora Domestica (1823) and Sylvan Sketches (1825), both botanical works that double as literary anthologies in order to expose a productive gap between literary and scientific knowledge. In a time when the distinction between …
"I'M Absolutely Ordinary": Bella And Her Perception Of Gender Within Twilight, Jaid M. Eichmiller
"I'M Absolutely Ordinary": Bella And Her Perception Of Gender Within Twilight, Jaid M. Eichmiller
University Honors Theses
This thesis explores Bella's perceptions of femininity, virtue, and gender roles within Twilight, with a focus on the feminist stance that Bella takes as the narrator. Through a close reading, I explore traditional gender roles, the internalized maternal roles of wife and mother, and the externalized judgements that Bella expresses. Her relationships with those around her, and most importantly Edward, are judged by her internalized concepts of gender politics. Through the examination of previous literature and the close reading of the core text, I argue that Bella both embodies and rejects traditional femininity.

Zombie Ent(R)Ailments In Risk Communication: A Rhetorical Analysis Of The Cdc’S Zombie Apocalypse Preparedness Campaign, Ryan Cheek
English and Technical Communication Faculty Research & Creative Works
Apocalypticism is a powerful brew of eschatological belief and political imagination that is extremely persuasive. This article addresses the intersections between apocalyptic rhetoric and the technical communication of risk, disease outbreak, and disaster preparedness by analyzing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's zombie apocalypse preparedness campaign. Specifically, I argue that the framing of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's campaign relies on and extends problematic iterations of apocalypticism and undermines the educational objectives of disaster preparedness and response. I conclude with suggestions for how technical communicators designing public awareness and outreach campaigns can use existential risk rhetoric for …
An Analysis Of Gothic Conventions In Abu Al-Reesh’S Umm Al-Duways And Saadawi’S Frankenstein In Baghdad, Amna Matar Khalfan Mohammed Al Neyadi
An Analysis Of Gothic Conventions In Abu Al-Reesh’S Umm Al-Duways And Saadawi’S Frankenstein In Baghdad, Amna Matar Khalfan Mohammed Al Neyadi
Dissertations
Gothic as a literary form first appeared in late eighteenth-century British literature, when Horace Walpole described the second edition of his novel, The Castle of Otranto (1764), as a Gothic story. From that time, and throughout the nineteenth century, Gothic continued to exist in English literature and other European nations’ works of literature. This dissertation aims at proposing and delineating the existence of Gothic elements in modern Arabic novels. In doing so, this research demonstrates that the Gothic genre is part of contemporary Arabic novels, even though Arab literary criticism pays less attention to this fact. This study focuses on …
“It Doesn’T Feel Like A Conversation”: Digital Field Experiences And Preservice Teachers’ Conceptions Of Writing Response, Alison Heron-Hruby, James S. Chisholm, Andrea R. Olinger
“It Doesn’T Feel Like A Conversation”: Digital Field Experiences And Preservice Teachers’ Conceptions Of Writing Response, Alison Heron-Hruby, James S. Chisholm, Andrea R. Olinger
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Research shows that preservice English teachers (PSETs) lack opportunities to respond to student writing and that they may view student writing through a deficit lens. To address this need, the authors developed the Writing Mentors (WM) program, a digital field placement that gave PSETs experience providing feedback to high school writers. In this analysis, we examine how PSETs’ views of response were shaped by their digital interactions with high school writers. The challenges of interacting asynchronously created opportunities for PSETs to identify limitations in the mode of communication, propose approaches to providing feedback, and reflect on how teacher feedback can …

Media Image As An Important Meaning Of Uzbekistan’S Image Formation: Theoretical And Cognitive Aspects, Beruniy Alimov Associate Professor (Phd)
Philology Matters
This article analyzes that the media image is an important tool for shaping the image of the country and the theoretical and cognitive aspects of the image.
We perceive an object or event through our senses, see and hear them. We understand and comprehend the new information received. They are then placed in our memory as a definite quality mark, image, or ‘piece of symbol’. Therefore, in the modern media space, it is important to understand the content of information about a country, positive or negative information about the image of the region, to understand the realities of what is …
