The Pedagogy Of Terror: Women's Education In The Gothic Novel, Faith Borland
The Pedagogy Of Terror: Women's Education In The Gothic Novel, Faith Borland
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the distinction between terror and horror that Robert Hume first established in his 1969 article on categories of the gothic novel, a distinction that I redefine as a scholar working after the #Metoo movement and broader cultural recognition of the terror that women face in their everyday lives. “Terror” illustrates the sustained sensations produced in women’s lives as powerless and marginalized. Eighteenth-, nineteenth- and twenty-first-century women writers of the gothic, including Ann Radcliffe, Mary Shelley, and Silvia Moreno-Garcia, depict female characters who overcome terror through domestic, scientific and medical, familial, experiential, cultural, and academic education. Linking recent …
Toward An Erotics Of Reading: Three Hypotheses On Pleasure From Barthes's "The Pleasure Of The Text", C. Connor Syrewicz
Toward An Erotics Of Reading: Three Hypotheses On Pleasure From Barthes's "The Pleasure Of The Text", C. Connor Syrewicz
Journal of Creative Writing Studies
In this paper, I argue that it would be pedagogically useful to investigate the psychological processes which lead readers to like and dislike texts, and I offer an initial set of hypotheses on the pleasures of reading which can be gleaned from Roland Barthes’s short monograph, The Pleasure of the Text. I begin by briefly addressing the origins of this research before I discuss the concept of writing “expertise” as it has been conceptualized by other fields of writing research. I argue that understanding those factors which lead different audiences to like or dislike texts as they read could …

Speech Peculiarities Of Young Uzbek Mothers, Nodira Umarova
Philology Matters
Phenomena of motherhood is an independent existential value, as far as it satisfies social needs, that is an aspiration of individuals for selfactualization, descendant realization, the desire to leave a fully lived life. A notion of language personality is of concern which is different from the functional viewpoints of speech and communicative personalities. Motherhood changes both a female personality structure touching upon her motivational component, world-view, and her social status in the community, therefore, self-appraisal, her own image defines a woman’s language personality in the social role of a mother. Important features of a child's normal mental development are his/her …

“Writing History, Writing Trauma” : The Rape Of Igerna In The Medieval Brut Narratives, Gillian Adler
“Writing History, Writing Trauma” : The Rape Of Igerna In The Medieval Brut Narratives, Gillian Adler
Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality
In the Brut narratives of medieval historiography, male heroic success and specifically the birth of Arthur are predicated upon the rape of Igerna. A comparative approach to the Tintagel episode across several of these narratives reveals how the emphasis on romance, magic, and nation-building function to validate sexual assault and elide Igerna’s experience. Ultimately, the repetition entailed in translatio studii, specifically the transfer that takes place within history-writing, reinforces the silencing of the survivor’s voice. This repetition lends trauma to the reading experience or creates the risk that readers become inured to the rape.
Insistent, Persistent, Resilient: The Negative Poetics Of Patient Griselda, Susan Signe Morrison
Insistent, Persistent, Resilient: The Negative Poetics Of Patient Griselda, Susan Signe Morrison
Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality
This essay argues for silence as a dynamic actant and vibrant rhetoric. While Walter commits slow violence against her, Griselda in Chaucer's Clerk's Tale resists the predatory practice of exploiting nonhuman objects, which, within misogyny, women embody. Ultimately framed within an ecocritical paradigm, this essay is grounded in lessons from trauma studies concerning silence, as well as new materialist and ecocritical approaches. Whether focusing on emotional distress, environmental devastation, or the agency of materiality, these critical approaches cohere by making manifest and heard what has been repressed, silenced, or overlooked. Griselda writes her own narrative, patiently and resiliently enacting agency …

The Writing For Healing And Transformation Project, Heather Elizabeth Osborn
Education Doctorate Dissertations
As a qualitative action research study, the purpose of The Writing for Healing and Transformation Project was to facilitate more inclusive writing strategies and to promote individual and collective healing on issues of social suffering and oppression (Kleinman, Das, & Lock, 1997; Pennebaker & Smyth, 2016) for diverse students at a community college located in the northeastern United States. Censorship And The Satanic Verses: Policing Blasphemy In A Secular World, Alixa Brobbey
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Free speech is currently a hotly debated topic in the world of arts. This thesis traces the history and abolition of blasphemy law in England in light of its relationship with censorship in English literature. I examine the Rushdie Affair and its legacy, particularly in comparison to the Gay News trial. Building on previous scholarship, I examine the arguments that hate speech laws serve as a replacement for blasphemy law. I conclude with the suggestion that hate speech laws be amended to include a clause specifying that works of artistic merit cannot be prosecuted under such laws, mirroring the language …

Ernest Hemingway And The “Lost Generation”, Dildora Safarova
Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal
This article is dedicated to the generation of people who understand that there is no meaning in the world. They experienced this monstrous existential state, in which what they were taught turned into some strange decay. This generation (to which Jacob Barnes belongs) is not able to look at the absurd, because it really requires amazing courage. That is why they constantly infect themselves with some ideas, some intellectual schemes, philosophical reasoning, concepts. That is, they try all the time to poison their brain with something to establish a connection with reality. That is why the characters drink all the …

A Rhetoric And Ethics Of Character Narration In Ian Mcewan’S Nutshell, Yi Li Tang
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article “A Rhetoric and Ethics of Character Narration in Ian McEwan’s Nutshell” Yili Tang analyzes the narrative rhetoric and ethics of Ian McEwan’s novel Nutshell usingJames Phelan’s rhetorical theory of character narration.Applying the principle that character narration is an art of indirection, she attempts to decode the rhetorical dynamics of the novel. These dynamics entail an apprehension of the complex relationships between the functions of the narrator, a fetus, facing his narratee, and the implied author facing his audience. Furthermore, she traces the ethical consequences that are elucidated by the chosen narrative technique and the delineation of the character …

Today’S Dissection In English Lab: Analytical Discoveries Through Classical Rhetoric, James A. Cornette Jr.
Virginia English Journal
This article describes a single class session in Fall Semester 2020 with my undergraduate freshmen, featuring a “lab” discussion of a poem by Sun Yung Shin. The “dissection” of her poem proceeds by means of an application of classical rhetorical tools -- particularly the appeals to logos, ethos, and pathos -- the “lenses” by means of which a process of critical analysis takes place. The intention of my article is to demonstrate how productively students can apply such rhetorical tools when they have been carefully trained in their use for several weeks in a semester. To shift the …

This paper focuses on low-stakes writing strategies that teachers might use to promote literacy development in the classroom and decrease their feelings of inadequacy. The authors, Lauren and Heather, use the lenses of dialogic pedagogy and the reflective turn to draw upon literature on the blending of reading and writing instruction and elements of autoethnography to examine their efforts to support students’ literacy development. Working from the literature and pedagogical reflections, the authors offer suggestions for instructional practice …
