Modern Concepts Of The Study Of Phraseological Units Within The Framework Of Frame Representation And The Theory Of Conceptual Metaphor, Navruza Aliyeva Aug 2021

Modern Concepts Of The Study Of Phraseological Units Within The Framework Of Frame Representation And The Theory Of Conceptual Metaphor, Navruza Aliyeva

Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal

The current article is devoted to the particular theoretical views of the notion of frame as well as it focuses on the and the theory of conceptual metaphor. Moreover, it deals with the specialized frame, slot and terminal characteristics which might be involved in most common used phraseological units, particularly, on the examples of English, Russian and Uzbek sentences and collocations. As it’s obviously seen that phraseological units contain deep sense, which have roots in the culture of nation. They reflect people’s way of thinking and perception of the world. They are considered to be “codes” of culture, its specific …

Fear Then And Now: The Vampire As A Reflection Of Society, Mackenzie Phelps Aug 2021

Fear Then And Now: The Vampire As A Reflection Of Society, Mackenzie Phelps

English (MA) Theses

Over the expanse of centuries, human society has created monsters in order to give a physical form to their abstract fears. Society has gone from speaking of them in oral traditions to watching them on a screen in more recent decades, but the written works of these monstrosities have occurred in the multitudes across multiple eras. The globalized monster I have chosen to focus on here is the vampire. Said vampires are witnessed as changing over time to adjust to the awakening or loss of certain human fears, distresses, and perceived threats—whether that be war, religion, race, etc. While …

Mythcon 51 - A Virtual “Halfling” Mythcon, The Mythopoeic Society

Mythcon Programs

Nothing “halfling” about it in the end, this year we are presenting fifty papers, panels, roundtables, and alternative programming for your Mythopoeic enjoyment. 2020 was a rough year for literally the whole world, and not just because we had to reschedule Mythcon 51. Many of us found ourselves turning to our favorite books for solace, not just academic interest, in the past year. We never could have expected to be hosting Mythcon 51 virtually, but already I’m thrilled about the silver linings that a virtual conference brings:

  • Greater international attendance, with presenters and attendees from all over the world!
  • Reduced …

Take This Work Global, Ian Cornelius Aug 2021

Take This Work Global, Ian Cornelius

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Paul Eggert’s The Work and the Reader in Literary Studies: Scholarly Editing and Book History elaborates a general program for the study of literature centered on the question, “What is the thing read?” Concepts of document, text, and work are parsed with care, generating many valuable insights and clarifications, but there is need for more thinking about the linguistic medium of literature. To textual studies, bibliography, and book history — the trio of foundational disciplines advocated by Eggert — one should add philology, or the study of literary language.

Crip Mothering: Representation Of Disability And Motherhood In Post-1980 American Films, Mohammed Ali H. Sumili Aug 2021

Crip Mothering: Representation Of Disability And Motherhood In Post-1980 American Films, Mohammed Ali H. Sumili

English Dissertations - Archive

Most scholarship on the topic of disability and motherhood tends to be of an empirical nature common to social, education, and psychology studies (Landsman 2008; Wilson and Cellio 2011, Filax and Taylor 2014). Despite the appearance of movies, novels and especially memoirs that deal with the subject, disability as it engages with motherhood has received scarce attention by feminist, motherhood, and disability scholarship (Prilleltensky 2004; Landsman 2008). Existing literature indicates a gap in studying the joint representation of mothers and disability. This study aims to address this gap by analysis of a selection of post-1980 American movies. Concentrating on the …

Almost Speechless: Representations Of Womanhood And Female Voices In Turn-Of-The-Century American Novels, Carmen Sylvia Smith Aug 2021

Almost Speechless: Representations Of Womanhood And Female Voices In Turn-Of-The-Century American Novels, Carmen Sylvia Smith

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In this dissertation, I close read four turn-of-the-century American novels by Henry James, Kate Chopin, Charles Chesnutt, and Willa Cather to analyze how the voices and silences of fictional women characters work to disrupt cultural ideals about womanhood. Examining which aspects of the characters’ identities are expressed in direct dialogue and which traits are conveyed to the reader through narrative devices reveals how cultural ideals about womanhood restrict women’s self-expressive autonomy and work to exclude female voices from the public sphere.

Chapter One examines Henry James’s The Bostonians (1886) and how erotic rivals Olive Chancellor and Basil Ransom compete to …

Imagination In Practice: Writing Studies And The Application Of Hospitality., Edward Alan English Aug 2021

Imagination In Practice: Writing Studies And The Application Of Hospitality., Edward Alan English

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The question of how to ethically teach, learn, and engage in an evolving world remains one of the most longstanding investigations in writing studies scholarship. Examining some of the most foundational frameworks for writing pedagogy reveals that their underlying motivations share common concerns for how to learn from and empower students. This dissertation builds from this trend and foregrounds the observations, stories, and experiences of consultants and writers at the University of Louisville’s Writing Center through a qualitative study that is informed by case study methodology and collaborative action research. I draw on primary data collected from one focus group …

Other Than Him: Superman As The Alien That Made Good, Roy Schwartz Jul 2021

Other Than Him: Superman As The Alien That Made Good, Roy Schwartz

Mythcon

When discussing depictions of the alien in American popular culture—as extraterrestrial, as strange foreigner, and as both, an otherworldly Other—the most famous example is rarely considered; SUPERMAN. Introduced in 1938, this strange visitor from another planet possesses powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men but walks among us disguised as a mild-mannered human. He’s the fantastic hiding in plain sight as the most mundane, an Other beloved as familiar, a singular being of another race who’s come to symbolize the best in humanity. And not by accident. Superman was created by two Cleveland teens, Jerry Siegel and Joe …

The Keystone Or The Cornerstone? A Rejoinder To Verlyn Flieger On The Alleged “Conflicting Sides” Of Tolkien’S Singular Self, Donald Williams Jul 2021

The Keystone Or The Cornerstone? A Rejoinder To Verlyn Flieger On The Alleged “Conflicting Sides” Of Tolkien’S Singular Self, Donald Williams

Mythcon

In “The Arch and the Keystone,” Mythlore 38:1 (Fall/Winter 2019), 5-17, Tolkien scholar Verlyn Flieger argues that the conflicts and contradictions she sees in Tolkien’s essays and fiction do not call for harmonization but rather should be embraced for what they are: “two opposing and conflicting sides of one person, whose contention makes him who he is as well as what he is, the keystone that creates the arch” of The Lord of the Rings out of the friction of the two sides (16). Unfortunately, the alleged contradictions, e.g. between the despair of the Beowulf essay and the hope for …

Confronting Student Resistance To Ecofeminism: Three Perspectives, Jennifer Browdy De Hernandez, Holly Kent, Colleen Martell

The Seneca Falls Dialogues Journal

Teaching ecofeminism is a dynamic, vital practice, demanding a great deal of both educators and students. At the heart of this essay is the question: how can we teach ecofeminism effectively? In this work, we reflect on our successes and failures teaching ecofeminism within various topics and in different settings. While each co-author of this piece brings ecofeminism into our classrooms, we do so in very different ways and have diverse approaches to making ecofeminist theories and ideas feel vital, necessary, and relevant for our students. In our essay, we aim to offer some productive and provocative suggestions and ideas …

An Unexpected Study: A Response To Ordway's "Tolkien’S Modern Reading", Maureen F. Mann Jul 2021

An Unexpected Study: A Response To Ordway's "Tolkien’S Modern Reading", Maureen F. Mann

Journal of Tolkien Research

Abstract for An Unexpected Study

This essay review interrogates the polemical style of rhetoric in Holly Ordway’s Tolkien’s Modern Reading. It critiques her use of a fictional narrative to represent an adolescent Tolkien, her intertextual criteria, and her dating of Victorian fantasists and their historical moment. It questions her claims about entrenched notions concerning Tolkien, her use of evidence, and her assumptions about her audience. It concludes that Ordway is less interested in Tolkien’s contemporary reading and more interested in creating a new narrative about Tolkien the author.

Literacy, Rhetoric, Tradition, And Truth In The Age Of Bede, Gerard A. Lavin Iii Jul 2021

Literacy, Rhetoric, Tradition, And Truth In The Age Of Bede, Gerard A. Lavin Iii

English Language and Literature ETDs

Despite his own high level of literacy and education, the Venerable Bede (672/3–735) inhabited a world in which nearly all personal, social, educational, and political discourse was conducted orally. A thorough understanding of his works will require an understanding of this discourse, but attempts to apply broad theories of “orality” derived from other cultures to early medieval England have repeatedly foundered. This dissertation establishes a set of guiding principles to produce a more nuanced and localized model of discourse in Bede’s England and observes a variety of ways oral and literate forms of rhetoric were employed by political actors in …

Character-Based Dynamicity In Thomas Hardy’S Far From The Madding Crowd: A Techno-Thematic Preview, Marwan Hamdan استاذ مساعد

Journal of Al-Azhar University – Gaza (Humanities)

Abstract:

This research examines Thomas Hardy’s multi-thematic novel Far from the Madding Crowd based on its artistic techniques and characters’ mobility. Hardy’s novel revolves around serious human values and virtues such as love, marriage, socialization, and naturalization. Such thematic values are basic themes that this paper explores their aesthetic techniques. Meanwhile, the paper tries to interpret Hardy's novel in the light of concepts of thematization and characterization, which trace the mentalities and consciousness of his major characters in the intended narrative. Hardy’s artistic vision towards male and female characters is the center of this paper, for both genders undergo …

English Renaissance Tragedy: Kyd’S The Spanish Tragedy And Marlowe’S Doctor Faustus In Perspective, Fuad Abdul Muttaleb Jul 2021

English Renaissance Tragedy: Kyd’S The Spanish Tragedy And Marlowe’S Doctor Faustus In Perspective, Fuad Abdul Muttaleb

Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات

In this paper, I shall be trying to investigate the nature of the English Renaissance drama through two prominent examples: Thomas Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy (1556-1857) and Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus (1588-1593). In order to carry out this aim Kyd's play (probably performed 1586–7), will be looked at as the first successful English example of tragedy, for its force and originality was widely acknowledged, and Marlowe's play (probably performed 1592) as an artistic expression of the Renaissance spirit, a recreation of the Faust legend. The English idea of a Renaissance tragedy seems here to be a mixture of the ideas …

Countering Online Misinformation In The First-Year Composition Classroom, Samantha Sparrow Williams

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis encourages the intentional and explicit integration of the best practices in media literacy education within the first-year composition classroom. The nature of FYC, which incorporates such content as research skills and source evaluation, provides an ideal opportunity to address the online misinformation and disinformation that have resulted in growing political polarization and cynicism. Recent findings suggest that these trends can be countered with the teaching of practices like lateral reading to verify a source’s veracity. After first demonstrating the challenges that university freshmen may bring with them to campus, this project makes suggestions for simple, consistent practices that …

Dorothy Scarborough. 'Supernatural Science' (1917), Arthur B. Evans Jul 2021

Dorothy Scarborough. 'Supernatural Science' (1917), Arthur B. Evans

Global Language Studies Faculty publications

Introduced and annotated by Arthur B. Evans In its day, Dorothy Scarborough’s book The Supernatural in Modern English Fiction (1917) was considered to be the best scholarly study on the subject. As the author points out in the book’s preface, the sheer size of its corpus was impressive: “the supernatural in modern English fiction has been found difficult to deal with because of its wealth of material. While there has been no previous book on the topic, and none related to it ... the mass of fiction itself introducing ghostly or psychic motifs is simply enormous” (v). Scarborough divided her …

No Easy Way Out: A Memoir Of Interruption, Cameron S. Steele Jul 2021

No Easy Way Out: A Memoir Of Interruption, Cameron S. Steele

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

No Easy Way Out: A Memoir of Interruption is a collection of personal essays examining themes of race, the body, violence and desire as it seeks to examine and interrupt inherited, normative understandings of work, art, beauty, love, and belonging. An illness narrative that follows my experiences as a girl born into a family of white Southern wealth, as a young crime reporter in the Deep South, and as a mother, scholar, and writer in the Midwest, No Easy Way Out raises questions about the entanglement of privilege, illness, and access to care. The book considers the stories I covered …

Food And The Irish Short Story Imagination, Anke Klitzing

Articles

Short fiction is a format heartily embraced by the Irish literary imagination since the nineteenth century. This paper takes a gastrocritical approach to investigate the role of food in selected stories from the recently published anthology The Art of the Glimpse (2020). It shows that through the years, food and foodways have been valuable tools for Irish writers, providing setting and context, themes and symbols, plot points, conflicts, characterisation, as well as the quintessential epiphanies.

Redefining The Object Of Semiotic Studies, Yiqiang Jin Jun 2021

Redefining The Object Of Semiotic Studies, Yiqiang Jin

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

Semiotics has long suffered a severe identity crisis, displaying confusions on four relationships. The crisis stems partly from our failure to distinguish three pairs of relata and partly from our poor understanding of the nature of an academic discipline. Semiotics is, first of all, a discipline. Like other academic fields, it should have a sound object of study and aim at an adequate theory. An excursion into psychology and the philosophy of science can reveal to us the necessary constituents of a proper object of study and of a good theory. Looking back, the history of semiotics has brought up …

Female Characters In The Novel “Death Of A Hero” By Richard Aldington, Shakhnoza Chorieva

Philology Matters

The literary process in the first half of the twentieth century acquires new styles, new techniques, it combines modernism and realism. For literary works, fantastic absurdity becomes characteristic, as a new experimental form. If in the nineteenth century, literary works described clear objective subjects, for example, love, evil, family and social relations, then in the updated literature of the twentieth century, abstract psychological methods are used primarily to describe a particular thing. The First World War became the cardinal theme of the art in the first half of the twentieth century, determined the personal destinies and formed the artistic personality …

The aim of her article is to highlight the role of a short story genre in evolution of American writers, including James Jones, choosing their themes and further confirming the manner and peculiarities of their writing style in their novels. Author And Hero’S Parallelism In English And Uzbek Literature, Makhliyo Umarova Jun 2021

Author And Hero’S Parallelism In English And Uzbek Literature, Makhliyo Umarova

Philology Matters

The article examines the creative personality and his parallel construction with the literary hero and the use in Western and Eastern literature. The concept of a creative personality is a literary category, where there are leading the biographical and psychological factors. Nevertheless, the author is one of the factors in the perception of life events, their expression in high poetic and prosaic forms unlike “I”, especially in the choice of images and the formation of artistic heights in their expression. The creative personality is reflected through the artistic image (a character, a hero) and the characteristics of the creative style …
