George Meredith's Modern Myth Of Love, Mark David Rosenthal Jan 1978

George Meredith's Modern Myth Of Love, Mark David Rosenthal

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

While George Meredith's sixteen-line sonnet sequence Modern Love fits neatly into his philosophical, triadic system of Blood, Brain, and Spirit,1 the neatness of this correspondence should not cause us to ignore other complementary systems that inform and expand the poem. A careful reading of Modern: Love will expose a consistent allusion to the biblical myth of Adam and Eve, an allusion which adds a grand, universalized dimension to the poem's focused drama. Meredith has re-interpreted the myth to fit his own evaluation of love; moreover, the imagery of Modern Love, as it transforms the original myth, allows us to …

Samuel Becket's Use Of "Silence", Russell V. Watkins Jul 1977

Samuel Becket's Use Of "Silence", Russell V. Watkins

English Theses & Dissertations

Silence is an important aspect of modern literature. No other living writer has made more adept use of silence in his fictional works than has Samuel Beckett. In this thesis submitted in partial fulfillment for the M.A. degree in English, I provide an in-depth study of Beckett's use of silence both in his prose works and in his plays. Not only does this thesis provide an in-depth study of Beckett's use of silence, but it also provides a brief survey of how Beckets use of silence has gradually evolved in his fictional works, and comments on the significance of …

The Development Of Criterion Categories For Evaluating Novels Dealing With Teen-Age Drinking, Jane Hoeppner Jan 1977

The Development Of Criterion Categories For Evaluating Novels Dealing With Teen-Age Drinking, Jane Hoeppner

Graduate Research Papers

Drinking has existed throughout time in may forms. It is only within the last few years that society has viewed alcohol use with concern as the number of teen-agers drinking and more importantly, teen-age alcoholism has increased. In order to combat these figures, many alcohol education programs are being instituted throughout the country.

Many- or these programs are based on the values clarification approach. One teaching method to this approach is the use of the novel. From research conducted, it appears that little has been done in using novels dealing with teen-age drinking. Recognizing the utility of this type of …

Stereotyped Portrayal Of The Elderly In Picture Books, Deborah J. Jackson

Graduate Research Papers

Studies have found that minorities have been portrayed in a stereotyped image in children's picture books. Since the elderly have been considered a minority group, this study examined the portrayal of the elderly in picture books to determine if a stereotyped image is present. Content analysis was performed on thirty-three books. A worksheet was devised which contained the four main categories main character, function or role, physical appearance, and personality descriptors. Sub-categories for each main category were also provided on the worksheet. Frequency of occurrence for each category or sub-category was then recorded on the worksheet. After the analysis was …

Characterization Of Asian Americans In Children’S Literature, June S. Talbott

Graduate Research Papers

This study was designed to determine how Asian Americans have been characterized in children's fiction. The questions investigated were: (1) what are the identifiable physical, social and personality stereotypes attributed to Asian Americans, (2) how have characterizations of Asian Americans changed between the periods 1945-1965 and 1966-1976, and (3) how have Asian American authors and illustrators characterized Asian Americans as compared with non-Asian American authors and illustrators. The time periods were chosen to test the impact of the Civil Rights Movement and the growing consciousness of the importance of ethnicity.

A total of 34 books and 219 characters were analyzed. …

William Dunbar: An Analysis Of His Poetic Development, G. David Beebe Jul 1976

William Dunbar: An Analysis Of His Poetic Development, G. David Beebe

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines the work of William Dunbar, a sixteenth century Scottish poet, in order to demonstrate that he is not, as he is often styled, a Scottish Chaucerian. It makes an analysis of the chronological occurrence of forms and themes in his poetry which indicates that his work can be divided into three periods: (1) an initial period in which his work deals with traditional matter and forms; (2) a second period in which he develops a distinctly personal poetic voice; and (3) a final period in which he perfects this personal voice and then relinquishes it for a …

An Otherwise Report, M. Q. Rice Feb 1976

An Otherwise Report, M. Q. Rice

Faculty Honor Lectures

In defense of myself and the Honors Committee I accept this assignment as a tribute for something, possibly for setting a new record as a hunger artist or for simply staying in town and reciting the penitential psalms daily for over 40 years. I have a sneaking suspicion that they may be exposing me for not being creative in the Greek sense of fulfilling the promise of one's birth. If I had got around to writing Pericles' funeral oration, Dostoevsky's "Grand Inquisitor," or E. E. Cummings' "What if a Much of a Which of a Wind," as I fully intended …

The Development Of Criteria For Evaluating Junior Premarital Pregnancy Novels, Connie Jo Barto

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to develop criteria that could be used by classroom teachers and media specialists to judge the quality of junior premarital pregnancy novels. A secondary purpose was to demonstrate by means of model critiques how the criteria could be applied. The professional literature reflected five categories of conern relating to junior premarital pregnancy novels: adolescent sexuality, didacticism, sexism, pat solutions, and stereotyped adults. The researcher selected a panel of six experts to comment on the categories of concern and to identify the ten most widely read titles in the genre. The panel included practicing media …

A Study In Moral Development In Children's Literature, Judith A. Casey Jan 1976

A Study In Moral Development In Children's Literature, Judith A. Casey

Graduate Research Papers

This study was undertaken for the purpose of analyzing children's picture books to determine if specific moral conflict episodes could be identified, according to Lawrence Kohlberg's cognitive theory of moral development. The identification of conflict dilemmas was made by examining selected books for young readers to identify and isolate problems encountered by one or more characters. If conflict story incidents could be identified and described, it seemed probable that teachers could use them as a primary source for stimulating discussions about moral problem solving behaviors. Thus, a second purpose was to determine if a process of questioning could be used …

The Composite Art Of Blake's "Laughing Song", William Robert Warner Jan 1975

The Composite Art Of Blake's "Laughing Song", William Robert Warner

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

During the past five years, the literary critics have discovered William Blake, helping readers to understand clearly the various stages of development and the final form of the poet's entire mythology. And recent criticism has also clarified and expressed more systematically than earlier criticism certain features of Blake's total thought. Nevertheless, much recent criticism has hindered rather than helped the serious student of Blake's poetry.] Most critics treat Blake's poems as if they were only literary, completely avoiding discussion of their visual components. Yet, Blake clearly envisioned and intended that his reader view the poetry as a new form consisting …

Milton And The Classical Tradition : An Annotated Bibliography, Mary Lou Myrick

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Because of the mainly scholarly studies of Milton’s works, and the many questions that have yet to be resolved, an annotated bibliography of Milton’s classicism is indispensable in enabling one to survey the ground that has been covered and to clarify the issues further. The observation that John M. Steadman makes about Paradise Lost also applies to Milton’s entire canon.

The items in this bibliography are organized in five categories: (1) epic, (2) tragedy, (3) prose, (4) minor poetry, and (5) general criticism. Listings within these categories are alphabetical.

Boys Will Be Boys Or How They Are Portrayed In Children’S Books, Nancy Volmer

Graduate Research Papers

For this research the author was concerned with the portrayal of males in literature; more specifically, the characterization of boys in children's books. The researcher wanted to find out if boys are represented realistically and if the characteristics of boys in fiction have changed over time. The books selected were fiction and the reading level ranged from fourth to sixth grade. The main character of each book was a male figure of approximately ten years of age. There were two time periods from which the books were selected. One grouping was from 1959-1963 and the other from 1970-1974. Other books …
