The Selection, Retelling And Illustration Of A Fairy Tale, Linda Rathe Jan 1988

The Selection, Retelling And Illustration Of A Fairy Tale, Linda Rathe

Graduate Research Papers

Fairy tales continue to be a very popular form of children's literature. The contributions that fairy tales make to children's developmental needs have been investigated by various experts, who have analyzed the stories in terms of the theories of Freud, Jung, Piaget, Kohlberg, and various social scientists. In view of the consensus that it is best if children have access to both a large number and a large variety of folk and fairy tales, a fair tale from a translation of the Grimms' collection was selected, retold, and illustrated. This was done in a manner responsive to the following developmental …

The Esl-A/B Book Project, Alan Blackstock, Sharon Snyder

English Faculty Publications

For the past two years, the ESL ... A/B department Bataan has been providing our students with reading materials that are "predictable," that involve situations and stories familiar and interesting to the students. This effort is based on the findings of Current reading and writing research, which indicate that students learn language-both spoken and written faster when the language material is related to things they know about, care about, and are interested in. In other words, students learn to read faster when they are interested enough to try to predict what the language means, and they learn to write faster …

The Portrayal Of Employed Mothers In Children's Fiction, Karen Carstensen Appleton

Graduate Research Papers

In American society today, mothers are joining the employment forces for economic purposes, and because they feel a need to fulfill their personal potentials or gain self-actualization. The purpose of this study was to determine how employed mothers are portrayed in children's fiction. The researcher analyzed eighteen books of children's fiction by means of a checklist in order to determine if the majority of employed mothers are 1) working for economic purposes rather than for purposes of …

Prescribed Passivity: The Language Of Sexism, Julia Penelope Jan 1988

Prescribed Passivity: The Language Of Sexism, Julia Penelope

Department of English: Faculty Publications

The recent controversy concerning the use and reference of so-called "generics" in the English language reveals the extent, if not the nature, of the political investment at stake in preserving the myth of generalized reference. Before I offer my data and observations regarding this myth, I wou1d like to emphasize that the arguments supporting generics, especially man, men and mankind, are not substantive, but political, and those who would like to maintain the use of masculine nouns as general references are relying on popular misconceptions, not linguistic data. Of course, if linguistic history provides clues to the outcome of this …

Oedipus Fallen: Irony In The Fiction Of Milan Kundera, Douglas Lauen Jan 1988

Oedipus Fallen: Irony In The Fiction Of Milan Kundera, Douglas Lauen

Honors Papers

The dialogue Kundera depicts between himself and his characters is central to his work because this interplay mirrors that between the author and the reader. In that Kundera is sometimes a character in his fictions (not just a narrator), we must consider his role in his fiction as one of personas; some stronger, some thicker than others. Kundera, as the self conscious, autobiography-writing narrator of his stories, uses irony to mediate between his and our perspective on the, subject matter. Considering that his narrative tone has remained remarkably similar throughout his novels, and that his subject matter has closely followed …

Masters Theses

Tutors of American university writing centers can be invaluable advisors for German ESL students who come to study in the United States. The tutors can directly assist German students in coping with their particular academic and cultural difficulties.

German students must adapt to the American academic conventions to become successful students at their U.S. universities. The tutors can point out to them the features of the American academic standard and show them effective methods for learning and studying in the American environment.

The American academic standard includes the students' almost perfect reading comprehension. Students must be prepared for heavy reading …

Can There Be Dissent In Catholic Universities?, William Rewak Oct 1987

Can There Be Dissent In Catholic Universities?, William Rewak

English

On Tuesday, September 15, Pope John Paul II addressed the American Bishops in Los Angeles and indicated, quite forcefully, that there can be no dissent in the Catholic Church.

He said , "It is sometimes claimed that dissent from the magiserium is totally compatible with being a 'good Catholic' and poses no obstacle to the reception of the Sacraments. This is a grave error . . . " The examples he used throughout his talk encompassed such issues as abortion, the ordination of women, sexual and conjugal morality, divorce and remarriage.

The mass media, of course, had their predictable field …

Surfacing And The Diviners: A Comparative Study, Helen Beach Cannon

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This paper explores religio-folkloric connections in two works of Canadian fiction--Surfacing, by Margaret Atwood, and The Diviners, by Margaret Laurence. On several levels these books have striking parallels. They are here treated as novels of quest and in terms of elemental symbology.
