Family Structure And Listener Response To The Jazz Man, Deborah Ann Sabotta
Family Structure And Listener Response To The Jazz Man, Deborah Ann Sabotta
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this study was to examine how seventh grade students responded to the oral reading of The Jazz Man (Weik). The researcher attended the four seventh grade language arts' classes in the Marion Independent School District, Marion, Iowa, and the twelve seventh grade language arts' classes in the Linn-Mar Community School District, Marion, Iowa, to read to and question the students. Students identified the adults with whom they live at home (their family structure) and then answered the question, "What do you think happened to Zeke (the main character in the story)?" This study determined what difference, if …
The Effects Of Book Location On The Selection Of First Readers By Elementary Students, Tracy Merfeld
The Effects Of Book Location On The Selection Of First Readers By Elementary Students, Tracy Merfeld
Graduate Research Papers
167 kindergarten, first and second graders at Garfield Elementary School in Boone, Iowa, and 470 first reader books were used to investigate whether justification can be given to shelving first reader books in a separate section. An increase in the number of charges of first reader books might demonstrate a need of students to have this type of material readily accessible.
The study was conducted over two 45 day cycles. During the first cycle, first reader books were identified, marked with a red dot and interfiled with picture books. A first reader section was created for the second cycle. All …

Fractured Certainties: Epistemology And Ontology In David Malouf's Child's Play, The Great World And Remembering Babylon, Chris Lyon
Theses : Honours
This thesis is an exploration of the way in which David Malouf develops ideas of epistemology and ontology in three of his novels. The novels discussed are Child's Play (1982), The Great World (1990) and Remembering Babylon (1993). Of particular concern here are the different ways in which figures in the text are constructed as having imperfect and sometimes contradictory systems of making sense of their world.

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
"The following are tributes written by readers of Mythlore. So many tributes have been submitted, that despite those given here, there are many more that will have to wait until the next issue. If you do not find your tribute here, please understand. Many of the tributes are very personal, but that is Tolkien's magic as a writer — he invites us as readers to participate in the act of sub-creation: our own imaginations complete the details of the stories, and they become part of us." — Glen GoodKnight

The Lost Tribalism Of Years Gone By: Function & Variation In Gay Folklore In Armistead Maupin's Tales Of The City Novels, Jimmy Browning
The Lost Tribalism Of Years Gone By: Function & Variation In Gay Folklore In Armistead Maupin's Tales Of The City Novels, Jimmy Browning
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This thesis intends to demonstrate that, because of the unusual circumstances of its writing - a semi-journalistic piece produced during a period of crisis in the real-life community fictionally depicted - Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City series stands as an unusually accurate and reliable ethnographic source for information concerning the gay male subculture of San Francisco in the late 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, not only the practice and behavior themselves, but also reflecting their personal and communal function. The methodology employed in demonstrating this thesis is necessarily subjective. Like gay folklore scholar Joseph P. Goodwin in More Man Than …

Mythcon Souvenirs
Welcome to the Long-expected Party! I can hardly believe that almost six years have passed since the meeting that began the planning of this great occasion. I do not think that any of us who gathered that day in the Turf Tavern after Oxonmoot 1986 foresaw how our originally quite modest plans would grow and develop, or how much work the organization of the Conference would involve. I would like to thank the 1992 Committee members, past and present, for all that they have done, especially those who have served in the last two years when increased work demanded so …

Bbc Television's Film Of Adam Bede, Kathleen Adams
Bbc Television's Film Of Adam Bede, Kathleen Adams
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
This adaption was not for the academic, the scholar or the purist. As none of these, I admit that, with reservations, I enjoyed the film.
There were some very good things about it. The setting was very attractive (Stanway in the Cotswolds for much of the action because it is one of the least changed parts of England) and the photography superb, particularly in the Chase when the sunlight filtering through the trees made an extremely pretty picture. The fight between Arthur and Adam was well staged. lain Glen as Adam portrayed the strength and integrity of the character convincingly; …

Charles Kingsley And The Via Media, John C. Hawley
Charles Kingsley And The Via Media, John C. Hawley
English
With the recent centenary of Newman's death attention has again been paid, in passing, to his notorious opponent Charles Kingsley ( 1819- 7 5). 1 For the last century this has largely been the case: as Kingsley's most recent biographer has noted, "It was [his] misfortune to be the fly embedded in the clear amber of his antagonist's apology" (Chitty 237). Though for Roman Catholics the 1864 controversy that led to the Apologia pro vita sua still seems to be the most interesting aspect of Kingsley's career, its unfortunate polemics must not be allowed to cloud the larger role that …
Religious And Spiritual Elements In Young Adult Literature: A Content Analysis, Patricia C. Rosenberg
Religious And Spiritual Elements In Young Adult Literature: A Content Analysis, Patricia C. Rosenberg
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this study was to use content analysis to focus on the nature of traditional religious and spiritual elements in young adult fiction books.
Thirty-two books from ALA/s "Best of the Best Books 1966-1986" were read, and eight religious contexfs were checked. The findings revealed over one half of the books included moderate traditional religious contexts. About three fourths of the religious contexts were positive, but over one half of them were also negative. Most of the negatives were applied to religious workers and participants in religion. The one book which had strong religious context was totally negative. …
