Women And Family In The Fiction Of Barbara Kingsolver, Laura Ann Gussett May 1995

Women And Family In The Fiction Of Barbara Kingsolver, Laura Ann Gussett

Theses & Honors Papers

Realizing the situations facing the American family and the changes it underwent, Kingsolver chooses to use her works as a means to explain how nontraditional families can succeed in American society. Kingsolver describes the evolution of Taylor Greer from a woman trapped in a hopeless situation into one with opportunities for success. Taylor discovers who she is but additionally learns through her relationships and from nature’s cycles that her interdependence with others permits the simultaneous growth of her identity and family. Her new found acquisition of an abused child, her new-found motherhood, and her decision to establish close ties with …

Three Practices In Technical Writing: A Portfolio, Alyssa Jean Hambelton May 1995

Three Practices In Technical Writing: A Portfolio, Alyssa Jean Hambelton

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

My technical/professional writing courses and experiences at Utah State University have taught me the importance of clear accessible writing and layout. As a senior honors student, I wished to practice the readability and accessibility skills I have acquired by creating a portfolio of technical writing projects. This would serve as a helpful instrument of practice for my entry into the technical writing profession. The portfolio includes three different projects: a non-periodic publication (Boise State Classroom Technology Bulletin), a newsletter (EIMCO Carrousel System Operators' Newsletter) and a procedures manual (Petroglyph Magazine Procedures). The written narrative that accompanies this portfolio summarizes the …

The Female Body As Icon: Edna Millay Wears A Plaid Dress, Cheryl Walker Jan 1995

The Female Body As Icon: Edna Millay Wears A Plaid Dress, Cheryl Walker

Scripps Faculty Publications and Research

The female body has never been so prominently displayed or so critically examined as it is today under the dominance of late capitalism. The results of this display, we can now see, have been mostly negative: women regard themselves at best self-consciously, at worst with disgust. Given this emphasis on self-scrutiny, it comes as no surprise that middle-aged women experience a reduction of self-confidence regarding their physical presences and a concomitant increase in self-dissatisfaction. It is also worth noting that a querulous tone often afflicts them as they grow older, suggesting that they are at odds not only with others …

Front Matter, Alice G. Brand (Editor)

The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning

Editor's Message

The prospect of bringing off a new journal is character building, I have come to believe—particularly when it is published only once a year and by a fledging organization. The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning (JAEPL) had to be good, very good, especially the inaugural issue. That this was the first issue also meant, I hoped, that readers would tolerate mistakes. Surely, mistakes could be corrected with the next issue. But on second thought, that was a long year away.

Nonetheless, I celebrate the occasion of the inaugural issue of JAEPL. …

How Crows Talk And Willows Walk, Gary Esarey Jan 1995

How Crows Talk And Willows Walk, Gary Esarey

Ahsahta Press

Though the preface to Gary Esarey’s volume claims “this little book [is] not art and craft but a parody of art, a grim bouffe stiffened by hard weather and cold,” it is a fitting introduction to the playful and often hilarious poems within. With titles such as “Pinch ruddy those cheeks of slumber” (“Pastel-gray on black/ the streaks of May do jog awake,/ the clouding night the day/ doth disendarkle...”) and “Trixi leaves town behind” (“Tacoma—/ it rebuffs improvement/ with time its smell diminishes/ its virtue is not overpraised...”), Esarey tips off the reader: expect parody, musical language, and humor …

Speaking Magic Realism: Selected Short Stories Of Peter Carey, Raymond Driehuis Jan 1995

Speaking Magic Realism: Selected Short Stories Of Peter Carey, Raymond Driehuis

Theses : Honours

This thesis is an analysis determined by the investigative proposition, what is a magic realist speech act? Of the schools of thought available to any philosophical undertaking in literature, this thesis makes particular use of the principles of speech act theory, genre theory, and poststructuralism. With genre theory, the emphasis is on the subgeneric construction of the narrative structure, and this thesis will incorporate three short stories from Peter Carey's The Fat Man in History as the most overt evidence for what the thesis is proposing to analyse and illuminate. But on the whole, readers will understand that, while …

Promoting Attitude And Amount Of Leisure Reading By Selected Fourth Grade Students, Barbara Navin Jan 1995

Promoting Attitude And Amount Of Leisure Reading By Selected Fourth Grade Students, Barbara Navin

Graduate Research Papers

In an effort to determine if media specialists can influence in a positive way the amount of leisure time reading elementary school students do, a study was designed which would test that hypothesis while involving students in two fourth grade classrooms, one of which was the control group and the other the experimental group. Specific activities such as booktalks, story and poetry breaks were performed only for the experimental group. This group also kept a list of books read in gaily decorated reading logs. Both groups kept a count of actual pages read, and actual books completed. Both groups were …

Tillie’S Christmas: Exposition Of A Children’S Book, Jeanne Anderson Jan 1995

Tillie’S Christmas: Exposition Of A Children’S Book, Jeanne Anderson

Graduate Research Papers

TILLIE'S CHRISTMAS: EXPOSITION OF A CHILDREN'S BOOK, by Jeanne Anderson. In preparation for writing the children's book, Tillie's Christmas, this study explores the craft of writing in general, as well as the process of writing children's books in particular. Since the resulting book intentionally reflects Christmas traditions as celebrated by second-generation German immigrants on the Iowa prairie in 1900, this paper researches those customs. To confirm the commonality of such ethnic experiences on the Iowa prairie in 1900, several interviews with second-generation German immigrants are included in the study.

Romancing Visual Women: From Canon To Console, Roberta Sabbath Dec 1994

Romancing Visual Women: From Canon To Console, Roberta Sabbath

English Faculty Research

This dissertation juxtaposes the romantic modal treatment of powerful, admired women which canonical male authors and feminist authors and critics construct with those constructed by contemporary women for the visual mass media of video, broadcast television, and computer. The discourse of the former produces the figure of a fragmented woman who is rare, supernatural, marginalized, and impossible. The discourse of the latter produces the figure of a psychologized woman who is typical, natural, mainstream, and possible. To examine the discourse of impossibility, I use three canonical works: Augustine's Confessions; Chretien de Troyes' Perceval; and Dante's Divine Comedy. I also survey …
