Motherhood And The Political Project Of Queer Indian Cinema, Bryce J. Renninger May 2007

Motherhood And The Political Project Of Queer Indian Cinema, Bryce J. Renninger

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

Motherhood & the Political Project of Queer Indian Cinema is a thesis that works to understand the variety of ways the films of queer Indian cinema use the figure of the mother. The Indian mother has a long history at the fore of the Indian imagination. Popular narratives and public culture within India have a history of focusing on the mother as a key site of Indian tradition. Narratives and cultures of all religious traditions in India have consistently focused on the mother as a central character and agent of change. Queer Indian cinema, of the diaspora and made from …

A Record Of The Struggle : Chinua Achebe’S Anthills Of The Savannah, Fruita Louise Diaz-Jenkins May 2007

A Record Of The Struggle : Chinua Achebe’S Anthills Of The Savannah, Fruita Louise Diaz-Jenkins

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

In Anthills of the Savannah Chinua Achebe presents the struggle of a formerly colonized African nation, Kangan, a substitute for Nigeria, to become a post-colonial nation. Achebe’s three main characters, members of the elite, who are personally and politically involved with the nation’s ruler, narrate their version of events. Their separate but intertwined journeys from the center of power to the margins where the majority of the country’s population resides illuminate the elements necessary for an inclusive postcolonial nation to rise from the neocolonial ruins of a traditional society.

Achebe uses narrative strategies that illuminate the collapse of the neocolonial …

A Theatre Student's Guide To Writing, Heather S. Hurd May 2007

A Theatre Student's Guide To Writing, Heather S. Hurd

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

A very common delusion under which most Theatre students suffer is the idea that because their craft is primarily oral and/or visual that they will not need to worry about developing their writing skills. This is a fallacy. Writing is fundamental in articulating play reviews, analysis and opinons concerning written or visual works, journal articles, theatre history, resumes, grants and proposals. In fact, writing is probably the most important form of communication in the theatre because, without it, there is generally no play to perform. In that plays begin life as written compositions, writing is arguably a very important, in …

Writing And Circulating Modern America: Journalism And The American Novelist, 1872–1938, Derek John Driedger

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

My research began with the question, "How did former journalists depict aspects of the newspaper environment in late-nineteenth, early-twentieth-century fiction?" A historical reading of journalism and fiction places the emphasis on what historical moments or trends these writers documented, and how they presented their worldview. To present findings on how a journalism career proved beneficial for a novelist, I examine arguments debating the shared space between fact and fiction when writers tried to raise their readers' cultural awareness. My study pays particular attention to newspapers such as the New York Herald, the New York World, and the Atchison [Kansas] Globe. …

Balancing Rosie And June: A Study Of Lynchburg College Postwar Alumnae And The Impact Of The Feminine Mystique, Dinah Watson

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

In 2003, the movie Mona Lisa Smile debuted describing the frustrations that many college women may have faced in the years after World War II. Wellesley College was the elite all-female institution that openly and proudly prepared its young women with the proper rules of etiquette and correctness. Despite Wellesley’s own excellent academic reputation, its close proximity to the prestigious single-sex male college, Harvard, made it even more appealing and convenient for the Wellesley girls to find a “suitable” husband. The novice young art instructor, Katherine Watson, was unique in that she wanted to offer her students not only a …

To Take Posesion Of The Crown: Forms, Themes, And Politics In Julia Palmer's Centuries, Brittany Beahm Mar 2007

To Take Posesion Of The Crown: Forms, Themes, And Politics In Julia Palmer's Centuries, Brittany Beahm

Theses and Dissertations

Julia Palmer, a little-known religious poet, composed two centuries-collections of one hundred poems intended to be sung as hymns-in the two years between 1671 and 1673. Palmer's manuscript is unique in that its author was perhaps the only self-taught Nonconformist woman to have composed centuries during the Restoration period. Although religion shaped the lives of most British citizens at the time, the public literary expression of spiritual experiences-particularly by middle-class women-was uncommon within conventional Puritanism. The poetry's hybrid of forms, proliferation of religious themes, and undertones of political subversion offer an important glimpse into the way Puritan women writers of …

Marginalized Literature In The English Classroom Working With Barbara Ehrenreich's Nickel And Dimed, Noelle Carpenter Jan 2007

Marginalized Literature In The English Classroom Working With Barbara Ehrenreich's Nickel And Dimed, Noelle Carpenter

Honors Theses

Literature in the English classroom should give students the opportunity to explore the voices of a diverse range of people, especially in a school system that is becoming increasingly diverse itself. By exposing students to literature that engages them in important social issues, students become aware of a world beyond their own. Marginalized literature shows students different perspectives that exist in the world in which they live. Ehrenreich's autoethnography Nickel and Dimed is a window into the lives of the working poor based on her own personal experiences and research during a time when the views surrounding those in poverty …

Interrupting The Puppet Master: (Un)Reliability And Metatextuality In Dave Eggers’S You Shall Know Our Velocity, Suzanne R. Samples Jan 2007

Interrupting The Puppet Master: (Un)Reliability And Metatextuality In Dave Eggers’S You Shall Know Our Velocity, Suzanne R. Samples

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In 2002 Dave Eggers (who had just come off of the success of a Pulitzer Prize nominated memoir about the death of his parents and the influx of cash that ensued) published a novel titled You Shall Know Our Velocity. Within three years the novel underwent significant alterations that changed the plot’s original meaning. Most notably, some of the printings of the novel contain an additional section of text called “An Interruption” written by the best friend (Hand) of the original narrator (Will); this additional text destroys Will’s original plot and makes the reader question the reliability of the text. …

Appalachian Literature And The "Red-Headed Stepchild Of Publishing:" The Writings Of Victor Depta And The Cultural Work Of Independent Presses, Kristopher Clifford

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Over the past couple of decades, Appalachian literature has developed a strong and close relationship with independent publishing, showing the latter to be an important medium for the expression for Appalachian voice. As the attempted consolidation of the book trade into a corporate, bottom-line oriented, high-profit industry minimizes the publication of books with mere "regional" appeal at the same time that the cultural products of Appalachia, as a region, continue to be marginalized through the continued deployment of stereotypes and attitudes of inferiority, Appalachian writers find it difficult to have their books published and distributed by major publishing houses. As …

"Two Nice Girls Sitting On A Park Bench Talking": Why It Matters Who Interprets Space In Diana Son's Stopkiss, Jennifer Lindenberger Jan 2007

"Two Nice Girls Sitting On A Park Bench Talking": Why It Matters Who Interprets Space In Diana Son's Stopkiss, Jennifer Lindenberger

The Corinthian

In Diana Son's play StopKiss we are confronted with two women who are the survivors of a hate crime based on perceived sexual orientation. This attack takes place in New York's West Village. The location of the park and assumptions about this park are not the main focus of the play; nevertheless, this space is centrally important to the play and the audience. My argument revolves around a central premise: while both the gay and straight communities see the West Village as primarily "gay space," the straight community assumes that gay [-occupied] space also means space safe for LGBT persons. …

Objectional Language In Young Adult Literature: A Mixed Method Analysis Of Twenty-Five Novels, Ann P. Larkin Kurt Jan 2007

Objectional Language In Young Adult Literature: A Mixed Method Analysis Of Twenty-Five Novels, Ann P. Larkin Kurt

Graduate Research Papers

This research examined 25 award-winning novels on the American Library Association's Best Books for Young Adults lists from 1995-2005 to identify through content analysis the frequency of use of objectionable language. A further textual analysis was then done to look for contextual patterns in the use of objectionable language in dialogue.

The researcher kept record of each instance of such language used in each novel. These instances were then analyzed by novel, by word, by most often used in each novel, and by most often used overall. Next, information was gathered to see if the objectionable language appeared in dialogue. …

"Try What Repentance Can": Hamlet, Confession, And The Extraction Of Interiority, Paul Dustin Stegner Jan 2007

"Try What Repentance Can": Hamlet, Confession, And The Extraction Of Interiority, Paul Dustin Stegner

English

In his film adaptation of Hamlet (1996),Kenneth Branagh under scores the confessional themes present in the play by setting two scenes in a Roman Catholic confessional box. In the first scene, Polonius interrogates Ophelia about her relationship with Hamlet-an interaction that reinforces the common association of the confessional with an obsession over female sexuality. In the second scene, Hamlet listens to Claudius's penitential prayer and becomes,as Mark Thornton Burnett notes, "an unpunctual but unconsoling father confessor."l By depicting Hamlet and Claudius in the confessional box, Branagh introduces a conspicuous anachronism since the device was never used in early modem England …

Frankenstein: Man Or Monster?, Leigh P. Mackintosh Jan 2007

Frankenstein: Man Or Monster?, Leigh P. Mackintosh

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Since its first publication in 1818, Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein has left a lasting impression upon the world speaking to a multitude of audiences including artists, scientists, philosophers, and society as a whole. Considering the impact of Frankenstein through its evolution as a cultural myth in various plays and films, this thesis will provide a way to gauge the relevance of Shelley’s story as an adaptation. Only by knowing what has been done in the past and how the materials have been used by other playwrights and screenwriters can one understand how to handle them as an original work. The …
