Creating Room For A Singularity Of Our Own: Reading Sue Lange's "We, Robots", Marleen S. Barr
Creating Room For A Singularity Of Our Own: Reading Sue Lange's "We, Robots", Marleen S. Barr
Publications and Research
The accessibility of Lange’s text might mitigate against recognizing its importance. Lange’s simple sentence structure and direct communicative mode convey a presently overlooked logical moral assertion: the impending Singularity is not a male-dominated patriarchal domain. The Singularity, in other words, should not be construed in a manner which excludes women and feminism. This assertion is patently obvious. But, nonetheless, it is often ignored. Before I read Lange’s novella as a description of the Singularity which feminists can embrace, I include the following background information: 1) a discussion about why the discourse relating to the Singularity needs to be expanded and …

Reminiscing About Ken Donelson: Tar Coeditor (With Alleen Pace Nilsen) 1974-1979, Chris Crowe
Faculty Publications
I knew of Ken Donelson long before I ever met the man.
As a brand new high school English teacher in Tempe, Arizona, I had read some of his work in the Arizona English Bulletin and English Journal. In fact, one of his English Journal articles appeared in the September 1977 issue, right when I started my teaching career in Arizona. That article, “Some Responsibilities for English Teachers Who Already Face an Impossible Job,” made clear not just that he understood the myriad challenges my colleagues and I faced, but also that he was incredibly well read and that he …
Literacy Crisis, Technology, And The Radical Reversal Of Power, Erin Michelle Cromer
Literacy Crisis, Technology, And The Radical Reversal Of Power, Erin Michelle Cromer
Theses and Dissertations
As new media is changing the way individuals communicate, efforts have already been made within universities to, once again, construct new literacy standards in the digital age, producing the appearance of a literacy crisis. I argue that rather than producing another literacy crisis, the fundamental reversal of the power structure concerning who dominates standard literacy places greater expectations on composition scholars and practitioners--rather than students--ultimately providing the conditions of possibility for using power productively to imagine a new pedagogy of rhetorical dexterity that reverses the role of expectations from standards to invention. Such a pedagogy offers rhetoric and composition a …
Public Intellectuals: Styles, Publics, And Possibilities, Matthew David Kay
Public Intellectuals: Styles, Publics, And Possibilities, Matthew David Kay
Theses and Dissertations
The status of the public intellectual is debated continuously in the United States, but what is not up for debate or theoretical examination is how public intellectual practice is mediated between style and publics. To that end, this study examines three public intellectual figures: Saul Alinsky, Noam Chomsky, and Robert Reich. Each examination analyzes and describes particular public intellectual styles — performances of culture — which trace three dominant public intellectual practices. These styles contain, invite, and deploy certain publics to engage with the public intellectual and vice versa. First, the study is a theoretical engagement with public intellectual practice …
"The Hollow Men": Divorce And Manhood In The Novels Of Howells, James, And Wharton, Melissa Pluta Parker
"The Hollow Men": Divorce And Manhood In The Novels Of Howells, James, And Wharton, Melissa Pluta Parker
Theses and Dissertations
This project examines the relationship between divorce and masculinity as presented in several realist novels written around the turn of the century, including A Modern Instance by William Dean Howells, What Maisie Knew by Henry James, and The Custom of the Country by Edith Wharton. It looks closely at how divorce, which saw a dramatic rise between the years 1880 and 1920, seemingly threatened an elite version of manhood that was already on the decline at this time, a version of manhood increasingly viewed within society as weak and effeminate and one represented in each of these novels by a …

This creative thesis is a collection of poems and an essay that explores the concept of defining the self through the influence of personal and cultural heirlooms. It is particularly concerned with the inheritances that children receive, whether they are a pair of stockings or a political atmosphere. This collection consists of five sections, submitted in partial fulfillment of University of South Carolina's Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing.

Othello's "Malignant Turk" And George Manwaring's "A True Discourse": The Cultural Politics Of A Textual Derivation, Imtiaz Habib
English Faculty Publications
A critique is presented of the play "Othello" by William Shakespeare, focusing on a reference from Othello's final speech to an incident in Aleppo, Syria that the author attributes to the manuscript essay "A True Discourse" by George Manwaring, a companion of English adventurer Sir Anthony Sherley. Early 17th century British history, Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex, and Queen Elizabeth I are mentioned, as well as references in the works to Turks and the censorship of English literature.
Witnessing The Web: The Rhetoric Of American E-Vangelism And Persuasion Online, Amber M. Stamper
Witnessing The Web: The Rhetoric Of American E-Vangelism And Persuasion Online, Amber M. Stamper
Theses and Dissertations--English
From the distribution of religious tracts at Ellis Island and Billy Sunday’s radio messages to televised recordings of the Billy Graham Crusade and Pat Robertson’s 700 Club, American evangelicals have long made a practice of utilizing mass media to spread the Gospel. Most recently, these Christian evangelists have gone online. As a contribution to scholarship in religious rhetoric and media studies, this dissertation offers evangelistic websites as a case study into the ways persuasion is carried out on the Internet. Through an analysis of digital texts—including several evangelical home pages, a chat room, discussion forums, and a virtual church—I investigate …
