Interdisciplinary Lesson Plans To Study Art And Romantic Poetry (1775-1837), Luz Elena Ramirez
Interdisciplinary Lesson Plans To Study Art And Romantic Poetry (1775-1837), Luz Elena Ramirez
Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy
Enhanced Pedagogy funding has supported the design of three interdisciplinary lesson plans for California State University, San Bernardino students to study the relationship between art and Romantic poetry (1775-1837). Following the scholarship of Stuart Henry, William Condee exposes the problem in academe of “disciplinary hegemony.” Henry argues that “disciplines have come to control content, pedagogy and the organization of higher learning. Disciplines. . . become systems of power that control resources and access to dissemination” (Henry qtd. in Condee 4). Disciplinary hegemony fractures lines of continuity between subjects. My project seeks to facilitate a robust engagement with art and ancient …
Preventing, Perceiving, And Post-Venting Suicide: A Guide For Teachers, For Their Students, Justin Vance
Preventing, Perceiving, And Post-Venting Suicide: A Guide For Teachers, For Their Students, Justin Vance
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
To aid teachers with intense time constraints, the following summary includes the bolded, most important points in the paper:
• Thank you for caring about your students; by doing more than just teaching your content, you will change lives ... and may save some.
• Teachers are not responsible for student suicide; we carry enough responsibility already.
• Genuine, assertive communication of confidence and support fosters the safe environment needed.
• Improvements to how we view and speak about suicide can help reshape how young people think about it.
• As young men lose what they care about in pursuit …
I, Gamer: Addressing Toxic Ludology And Narratology In The Gamer Discourse Community Through Reinterpreting Video Games As Hypertexts, Andrew S. Latham
I, Gamer: Addressing Toxic Ludology And Narratology In The Gamer Discourse Community Through Reinterpreting Video Games As Hypertexts, Andrew S. Latham
English Dissertations - Archive
My research examines two points crucial to the continuing discipline of video game rhetoric. First, it discusses the formation of toxic ludology and narratology in the gamer discourse community over the course of decades. I begin in the 1980s, showing how privilege in the gamer discourse community sowed toxicity that culminated in Gamergate in the 2010s, an event that is still ongoing and destructive to player discourse. In this half of the dissertation, I explore how uninviting gamers can be to new players and also provide examples where more progressive gamers are showing signs of being more inviting to new …
A Wrinkle In Autism Literature: An Analysis Of Madeleine L’Engle’S A Wrinkle In Time And Hope Larson’S A Wrinkle In Time: The Graphic Novel, Marla Larson
Masters Theses
This literature review will examine Madeleine L’Engle’s classic intermediate novel A Wrinkle in Time, and Hope Larson’s A Wrinkle in Time: The Graphic Novel. Medical scholarship regarding autism, comics scholarship, and comments from online contributors are used to describe how a comparison of these two texts can provide positive representation of autism in literature. Consideration for how these texts can be used together in the Language Arts classroom to develop the comprehension skills of students on the spectrum is also considered. This thesis first examines the character Charles Wallace in L’Engle’s original text and how he represents a positive presentation …

The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a correlation between the number of reported incidences of rape and stalking on college campuses and campuses that utilize CampusClarity by EVERFI as an educational tool to “reduce risky student behavior and prevent sexual assault on your campus.” The study investigated the relationship between the dependent variables, incidences of rape and stalking, versus the independent variables: partnership, men’s population, women’s population, on-campus drug crime, on-campus alcohol crime, on-campus domestic violence, and on-campus dating violence. The 11,181 campuses that report crime data required by the Clery Act were included as …

Introduction: The Ghost At The Feast: Religion In Scottish Literary Criticism, Patrick Scott
Studies in Scottish Literature
Surveys changes in Scottish institutional religion, summarizes Crawford Gribben's critique in 2006 of Scottish literary criticism's long-time anti-Calvinist bias, and introduces essays reappraising the treatment of belief by Scottish poets and novelists from varied religious backgrounds and the critical response to this aspect of their work.
Understanding College Readiness Through The Framework For Success In Postsecondary Writing: An Analysis Of Algebra Writing In High School, Gabriel Cerda
Theses and Dissertations
The topic of college readiness in the United States has become increasingly important as the number of students entering post-secondary institutions has continued to increase. Along with efforts to increase college readiness for students in K-12, calls have been made to better define what it means to be college ready and understand what factors play a role in preparing students for a postsecondary education. This study uses the Framework for Success in Postsecondary Writing as a critical lens and method of analysis to understand how the Framework can broaden our understanding of college readiness. This is a mixed methods study …

Coming To An Understanding: Daoist Rhetoric As Dialogue In Composition Studies, Veronica Anzaldua
Coming To An Understanding: Daoist Rhetoric As Dialogue In Composition Studies, Veronica Anzaldua
Theses and Dissertations
Monological argumentation, based on Aristotelian principles, dominates composition pedagogy in the United States. With this model, students construct arguments in which they advocate for their own viewpoints. To make argumentation more dialogic, there exist various discourse models, including Daoist rhetoric, based on the ancient Chinese philosophy of Daoism. Its tenets have the potential to generate dialogic discourse in composition due to Laozi’s, Zhuangzi’s, and Sunzi’s principles. The recent cultural turn in composition studies opens space for the exploration of dialogic pedagogy. Dialogic pedagogies based on Daoist philosophies, with other recent pedagogical innovations, have the potential to promote deep, interconnected dialogue …

This is a creative thesis comprised of three short stories centered on the experiences of three Navajo protagonists living on the Navajo reservation. The short stories fit within the field of Native American Literature and highlight issues of mortality, sexuality, and ceremony. The stories illustrate the experiences of modern-day Navajo youth grappling to understand how to connect traditional knowledge with modernity. The three stories featured within this thesis are offered as a way to understand these challenges. Each protagonist is faced with an issue of morality, sexuality, or ceremony, and each reach differing conclusions about these topics within their lives. …
Shakespeare And Experimental American Poetry, Alan Golding
Shakespeare And Experimental American Poetry, Alan Golding
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Why the particular emphasis proposed in my title on Shakespeare’s importance for experimental or avant-garde American poetry? We can take Shakespeare’s significance for American poetry generally, as for most writers in the English language, as a given. One can certainly trace Shakespeare’s presence in a wide range of more mainstream twentieth-century poetry, from John Berryman to Anthony Hecht to Sylvia Plath, and anthologies of poetic responses to Shakespeare abound. But the use of the ultimate canonical Anglophone writer by experimental poets dedicated to changing the context of writing and reception in their own time raises some interesting questions not just …

Scotland And The Geometric Imagination, Mike Hill
Scotland And The Geometric Imagination, Mike Hill
Studies in Scottish Literature
Review of: Matthew Wickman. Literature After Euclid: The Geometric Imagination in the Long Scottish Enlightenment. Philadelphia, PA: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2016.The review praises Wickman's "extraordinary book," designed to “throw a wrench into grand narratives about modernity,” summarizing its wide-ranging argument about the centrality of spatial, visual and geometric thought in what Wickman calls "the long looping eighteenth century," in Scottish philosophy, education and literature, and commenting briefly on the implications of Wickman's argument for "how literary canons are made" and "the dynamics of disciplines."

Multilingual Tutors' Experiences And Practices In Online Sessions, Petra Jurova
Multilingual Tutors' Experiences And Practices In Online Sessions, Petra Jurova
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
This thesis explores multilingual tutors’ diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and examines how those elements affect their tutoring practices in online sessions. While previous scholarship has examined multilingual student experiences, direct experiences of online multilingual tutors are relatively unexplored. For this study, four tutors were interviewed. The interviews revealed that tutors perceive their multilingualism as a strength in how they relate to multilingual students and their writing while also experiencing challenges related to assumptions made about their linguistic abilities. In online sessions, clarity and purposeful communication is key and multilingual tutors communicate clearly, often code-switching, which enhances understanding, efficiency, and …
Reader Response Theory: Students’ Encounter And Challenges With E- Literature, Ma. Junithesmer D. Rosales, John Paolo Sarce
Reader Response Theory: Students’ Encounter And Challenges With E- Literature, Ma. Junithesmer D. Rosales, John Paolo Sarce
English Faculty Publications
This paper investigated the overall experience of learners with e-literature (e-lit). E-lit as a new form of economy in the field of literature and humanities prompted authors and scholars to create newborn sites of learning — videograph fiction, kinetic poetry, text tula (hyperpoem), and hyperfiction. Thus, the digitization of resource materials in literature led the researchers to investigate the outer circle of some of these new born sites by focusing on the following: readers and their experiences on understanding and learning through e-lit; textual which is concerned with performance and complexities of using this new form of literature; and cultural …

Photographic (Over) Exposures In The Nuclear Age In Joyce Carol Oates’S You Must Remember This, Sonia Weiner
Photographic (Over) Exposures In The Nuclear Age In Joyce Carol Oates’S You Must Remember This, Sonia Weiner
Bearing Witness: Joyce Carol Oates Studies
Joyce Carol Oates’s novel, You Must Remember This, examines themes of memory, time, and nostalgia through verbal descriptions of iconic and fictional photographs (such as Rocky Marciano, Holocaust Victims, Atomic Mushroom Clouds, Rita Hayworth). An analysis of the photographic imagery in the novel reveals discrepancies between surface appearances and embedded social and cultural ideological contexts within the work. Photographs are shown to undermine the overt conformity and conservatism of postwar America by exposing its underlying uncertainties and tensions. These tensions are explored through the perspective of a rebellious adolescent female, whose struggles highlight Oates’s critique of power, violence, and postwar …
More Than Writing: The Application Of The Writing Process, Logan Kelley
More Than Writing: The Application Of The Writing Process, Logan Kelley
Tutor's Column
Beginning writers often struggle to apply the writing process. In order to help them understand this concept, it is helpful for tutors to draw connections with outside disciplines that the student is already familiar with. Most problem-solving approaches contain parallels with the writing process. Educational research shows that meaningful connections will help students apply difficult concepts. Tutors will best support beginning writers by helping them develop a consistent application of the writing process.
Undiagnosing Iphis: How The Lack Of Trauma In John Gower’S “Iphis And Iante” Reinforces A Subversive Trans Narrative, C Janecek
Accessus
Trauma has long played a role in queer narratives, including Ovid’s “Iphis and Ianthe”, which many scholars have interpreted as reinforcing heteronormativity through Iphis’s transformation into a man in order to marry Ianthe. However, I argue that John Gower’s rendition of this tale reframes Iphis as a trans man and allows us to understand the poem as a subversive trans narrative that revolts against cisnormative conceptions of gender. Utilizing Judith Butler’s writing on the medicalization of gender, I explore the relationship between trauma, performance, and gender within the Ovidian and Gowerian versions of Iphis.

Multimodal Composition And Digital Technology: Investigating The Out-Of-Class Experiences Of Students In A First-Year Composition Class, Jennifer Morgan Sims
Multimodal Composition And Digital Technology: Investigating The Out-Of-Class Experiences Of Students In A First-Year Composition Class, Jennifer Morgan Sims
English Language and Literature ETDs
This study explores how first-year students in a multimodal composition class use digital technology outside of class to complete their projects. The tendency in Composition studies to characterize students as “self-teaching” users of technology may obscure complex out-of-class experiences, so this study analyzes data from project reflections of 19 first-year students completing digital multimodal compositions to gain insight into their practices. Qualitative analysis reveals that the technical problems students encountered tended to be frequent and repetitive, and some problems were exacerbated by conflicts between the assignment requirements and the capacity of the technology required. Students tended to use trial-and-error methods …
“Donning The Skins”: The Problem Of Shapeshifting In The Saga Of The Volsungs, David Mudrak
“Donning The Skins”: The Problem Of Shapeshifting In The Saga Of The Volsungs, David Mudrak
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
“Fafnir became so ill-natured that he set out for the wilds and allowed no one to enjoy the treasure but himself. He has since become the most evil serpent and lies now upon his hoard” (Byock 59). Regin, recounting the tale of his brother’s transformation to Sigurd, describes an act of shapeshifting, a magical transformation of one’s body. While many scholars of Icelandic sagas focus their attention on the family sagas because of the clear message they provide for the Icelandic society, the magical elements of the mythical sagas also offer insight into the cultural workings of that people. In …
Loving In Plain Sight: Amish Romance Novels As Evangelical Gothic, Sigrid Cordell
Loving In Plain Sight: Amish Romance Novels As Evangelical Gothic, Sigrid Cordell
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
This article examines Beverly Lewis’s highly popular trilogy The Heritage of Lancaster County, a series often cited as inspiring the Amish romance novel trend. Although Lewis did not invent the Amish romance, the high visibility that her work enjoys in the media, and the conventional wisdom that she was the first to develop the genre, means that subsequent novels are necessarily responding to and adapting Lewis’s texts. Looking at Lewis’s trilogy as a foundational text, this article analyzes the ways in which it draws on Gothic conventions to perform evangelical cultural work (to use Jane Tompkins’s phrase). Considering the trilogy …
Writing Life, Writing Back, And Writing Through: Saloma Furlong's Why I Left The Amish: A Memoir And Bonnet Strings: An Amish Woman's Ties To Two Worlds, Sabrina Voelz
Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies
In recent years, the memoir boom has left publishers searching far and wide for new material. As part of this trend and the immense demand for anything Amish, non-professional writers have seized the opportunity make their voices heard. While there is a wealth of scholarship on the Amish, the often trauma-filled narratives of the ex-Amish have neither been widely accessible to the public, nor the subject of much academic scrutiny until recently. This article explores the memoir, its genre conventions, and current debates. Furlong’s debut memoir, Why I Left the Amish (2011), is a powerful narrative about a desperate struggle …
