Modernist Amateur Economists: Heterodox Economic Theory And British Literary Modernism, Samuel Smith
Modernist Amateur Economists: Heterodox Economic Theory And British Literary Modernism, Samuel Smith
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
In Modernist Amateur Economists: Heterodox Economic Theory and British Literary Modernism, I argue that a range of British writers of literary modernism responded to a moment of institutional and economic instability by engaging with heterodox economic theories in their literary works. Paying close attention to the institutional history of the academic disciplines of Literary Studies and Economics and to the state of heterodox economic theorization in the first half of the twentieth century, I assemble a group of writers I term “Modernist Amateur Economists,” who rejected the tendency of professional economists to abstract economic questions from broader cultural contexts. In …

Another Time, Another Place: The Truth Of Silence In J.M. Coetzee's Disgrace, Sara T. Murphy
Theses and Dissertations
Through Lucy’s rejection of the criminal justice system, Coetzee's Disgrace operates as an allegory for the failure of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to provide individual justice and reparations to victims of Apartheid.
A Social Media Misinformation Label And The Postrhetorical Presidency, Ethan Mcginty
A Social Media Misinformation Label And The Postrhetorical Presidency, Ethan Mcginty
Undergraduate Honors Theses
In May 2020, presidential communication on social media was—for the first time—subject to a misinformation label applied by the social media site on which the communication originated. This development indicates a turning point in social media sites’ relationship with presidential communication and demands adaptation in the scholarly understanding of presidential rhetoric during the present era. Drawing from the theoretical framework of the postrhetorical presidency, I perform dual rhetorical analyses of this landmark artifact. The first round of analysis ignores the label and analyzes the presidential communication alone to understand its function, while the second analysis reveals the rhetorical impact of …
The Personhood Of Nature In J. R. R. Tolkien’S Legendarium, Sophia Parrila
The Personhood Of Nature In J. R. R. Tolkien’S Legendarium, Sophia Parrila
Mythcon
This paper argues that J. R. R. Tolkien’s portrayal of plants, animals, and geographical features as morally complex persons is central to the ecocentric model of environmental stewardship developed within Tolkien’s Legendarium. Tolkien’s Middle-earth writings endow non-human beings such as animals, plants, and even rivers with personhood by emphasizing their individuality, their capacity for interpersonal relationships, and their agency to make moral choices. I build on work done by critics such as Susan Jeffers (Arda Inhabited), and Matthew Dickerson and Jonathan Evans (Ents, Elves, and Eriador) to find a practicable and inspirational environmental ethic in Tolkien’s …
The Speculative Worldbuilding Of Adál’S Blueprints For A Nation, Matthew David Goodwin
The Speculative Worldbuilding Of Adál’S Blueprints For A Nation, Matthew David Goodwin
Mythcon
ADÁL’s Blueprints for a Nation is an art installation that displays artifacts from the conceptual nation of El Spirit Republic de Puerto Rico. This imaginal nation expresses the unique social and linguistic experience of Puerto Ricans living off the island, and its principle tool is speculative worldbuilding. This essay examines two of the speculative roots of Blueprints for a Nation. First, the essay explores “El Mapagraph,” the fictional map of the nation that is in the shape of a domino and that alludes to the common practice of mapping utopias and fantasy worlds. The work also makes clear by its …
From Malacandra To Mars: Representations Of The Red Planet In C. S. Lewis, Robert Sawyer, And Andy Weir, William Thompson
From Malacandra To Mars: Representations Of The Red Planet In C. S. Lewis, Robert Sawyer, And Andy Weir, William Thompson
Mythcon
In his introduction to Visions of Mars: Essays on the Red Planet in Fiction and Science, Howard V. Hendrix suggests that the long-standing fascination with the red planet emerges from an unspoken anxiety around the extinction of the species. According to Hendrix, the “fascination with the Neanderthals, like our fascination with greenhouse-blasted Venus or with Martians of the Dying Planet scenario, arises from forebodings that such scenarios present ourselves and our world as viewed—both seen and dreamed—through a funhouse mirror” (Hendrix 10).
The ongoing fascination with mars has resulted in texts that treat the red planet in strikingly different ways. …
The Philosophy And Theology Of Fairy-Stories: Fantasy, Escape, Recovery, And Consolation, Giovanni Costabile
The Philosophy And Theology Of Fairy-Stories: Fantasy, Escape, Recovery, And Consolation, Giovanni Costabile
Mythcon
In his seminal 1939 Andrew Lang lecture “On Fairy-Stories,” Tolkien proposed what we might term his most extensive pronouncement on his own fiction and underlying poetics, as well as an analysis of Fairy-Stories constituting a referential and authoritative statement on the matter. The importance of the subsequently published text, chiefly cited from Christopher Tolkien's posthumous edited version in The Monsters and the Critics, or, more recently, in Douglas A. Anderson's and Verlyn Flieger's critical edition, simply cannot be overstated.
In the light of such awareness, I would like to examine Tolkien's antecedents as far as his chief arguments are …
Concerning The Interpretation Of The Concept Of Phraseological Units, Abdugafur Mamatov
Concerning The Interpretation Of The Concept Of Phraseological Units, Abdugafur Mamatov
Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal
This article is about the interpretation of the concept of phraseological units. Phraseological units are a communicative tool, it is a social phenomenon as a language tool, it exists in the relationship of language and thinking, language and culture, language and national mentality, and also performs a communicative function that reveals their essence in speech. Phraseological units, along with naming (nominative) an event or reality, have in their essence a content that reflects the material, mental, spiritual side of the person, the life experience of the people.
Fear Then And Now: The Vampire As A Reflection Of Society, Mackenzie Phelps
Fear Then And Now: The Vampire As A Reflection Of Society, Mackenzie Phelps
English (MA) Theses
Over the expanse of centuries, human society has created monsters in order to give a physical form to their abstract fears. Society has gone from speaking of them in oral traditions to watching them on a screen in more recent decades, but the written works of these monstrosities have occurred in the multitudes across multiple eras. The globalized monster I have chosen to focus on here is the vampire. Said vampires are witnessed as changing over time to adjust to the awakening or loss of certain human fears, distresses, and perceived threats—whether that be war, religion, race, etc. While …

Mythcon 51 - A Virtual “Halfling” Mythcon, The Mythopoeic Society
Mythcon Programs
Nothing “halfling” about it in the end, this year we are presenting fifty papers, panels, roundtables, and alternative programming for your Mythopoeic enjoyment. 2020 was a rough year for literally the whole world, and not just because we had to reschedule Mythcon 51. Many of us found ourselves turning to our favorite books for solace, not just academic interest, in the past year. We never could have expected to be hosting Mythcon 51 virtually, but already I’m thrilled about the silver linings that a virtual conference brings:
- Greater international attendance, with presenters and attendees from all over the world!
- Reduced …
Take This Work Global, Ian Cornelius
Take This Work Global, Ian Cornelius
English: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Paul Eggert’s The Work and the Reader in Literary Studies: Scholarly Editing and Book History elaborates a general program for the study of literature centered on the question, “What is the thing read?” Concepts of document, text, and work are parsed with care, generating many valuable insights and clarifications, but there is need for more thinking about the linguistic medium of literature. To textual studies, bibliography, and book history — the trio of foundational disciplines advocated by Eggert — one should add philology, or the study of literary language.

The National Football League wields a powerful influence on American society and holds an authoritative sway over various sociopolitical discourses, each influencing the degrees of interaction between people of different origins, cultural backgrounds and identities. The purpose of this research is to examine how the NFL is product of a network of racial discrimination directed at Black people within the league. This research examines how the National Football League functions as a white-dominated structure of power in order to manipulate, exploit, and erase Black bodies for the benefit of multi-billion-dollar profits. This study focuses on how Black players are subject …
Crip Mothering: Representation Of Disability And Motherhood In Post-1980 American Films, Mohammed Ali H. Sumili
Crip Mothering: Representation Of Disability And Motherhood In Post-1980 American Films, Mohammed Ali H. Sumili
English Dissertations - Archive
Most scholarship on the topic of disability and motherhood tends to be of an empirical nature common to social, education, and psychology studies (Landsman 2008; Wilson and Cellio 2011, Filax and Taylor 2014). Despite the appearance of movies, novels and especially memoirs that deal with the subject, disability as it engages with motherhood has received scarce attention by feminist, motherhood, and disability scholarship (Prilleltensky 2004; Landsman 2008). Existing literature indicates a gap in studying the joint representation of mothers and disability. This study aims to address this gap by analysis of a selection of post-1980 American movies. Concentrating on the …
Posthuman Nurturing In American Literary Futurities, Andrew Ryan Tolle
Posthuman Nurturing In American Literary Futurities, Andrew Ryan Tolle
English Dissertations - Archive
This dissertation applies posthuman theories to the concept of nurture in American literatures of 1880-1920 and 1980-2020 to explore how writers construct and imagine futurities that increasingly critique the liberal Cartesian human. While relationships between “subjects” and “objects” in Cartesian dualism can render the act of nurturing both problematic and violent, posthuman nurture decenters the nurturer, shifting focus onto the nurtured. This allows us to view nurture as an inherently mutual act that includes agencies beyond humans, including animals, plants, and other non-zoe. American literatures of 1880-1920, which often speculated futures taking place in 1980-2020, exhibit nascent strains of the …
“My Brand Is Sick Girl”: Identity Formation In The Young Adult Chronic Illness Novels The Fault In Our Stars And Sick Kids In Love, Natalie Thompson
“My Brand Is Sick Girl”: Identity Formation In The Young Adult Chronic Illness Novels The Fault In Our Stars And Sick Kids In Love, Natalie Thompson
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
This thesis explores the identities of the chronically ill protagonists in The Fault in Our Stars by John Green and Sick Kids in Love by Hannah Moskowitz, specifically by looking at the young protagonist’s self-identity, their relationships with their family members, and the romantic relationship they have with the chronically ill male lead. John Green, who does not identify as chronically ill, writes a novel that ultimately reflects ableist ideas of the medical model of disability, which sees disability as a problem to be solved by medical intervention, and compulsory heterosexuality through the portrayal of Hazel and her relationship with …
Imagination In Practice: Writing Studies And The Application Of Hospitality., Edward Alan English
Imagination In Practice: Writing Studies And The Application Of Hospitality., Edward Alan English
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The question of how to ethically teach, learn, and engage in an evolving world remains one of the most longstanding investigations in writing studies scholarship. Examining some of the most foundational frameworks for writing pedagogy reveals that their underlying motivations share common concerns for how to learn from and empower students. This dissertation builds from this trend and foregrounds the observations, stories, and experiences of consultants and writers at the University of Louisville’s Writing Center through a qualitative study that is informed by case study methodology and collaborative action research. I draw on primary data collected from one focus group …
A Teacher's Guide In Creating Linguistic Diverse Classroom: Code-Meshing And Translingual Practice In First-Year Composition, Yvonne Liu
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
This thesis and portfolio are inspired by the recent code-meshing pedagogy movement to promote linguistic justice in the composition classroom along with the author’s personal journey in English learning. The traditional, monolingual practice in the composition classroom often isolates international students who have multilingual abilities above the rest of the students. The idea that there is only one correct use of English—standard English—assumes that one type of English is better than others. However, most native speakers cannot explain the rules and mechanism of standard English, which leaves international students often feeling frustrated and lowers their confidence in English writing and …

Spoilers & Sequels; Bifurcated Fandoms In The Age Of Adaptation, Joseph Young, Paul Tankard, Lana Whited
Mythcon
Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movies launched a new era of adaptations of fantasy. The resulting adaptations—of the works of J.K. Rowling, Philip Pullman, George R.R. Martin, the Marvel superhero tradition and much else besides—now have fan bases often wholly separate 23 from those of their literary source texts. Rather than dwelling on what any given example gets ‘wrong’ or ‘right,’ this panel discussion will consider this bifurcation of the audience of a popular literary genre. If, as Tom Shippey suggests, fantasy deserves to be taken seriously because of its popularity, what are the ramifications of atomising the popular …
Realizing History: Tolkien And The Desire Called Marx, Robert Tally
Realizing History: Tolkien And The Desire Called Marx, Robert Tally
Mythcon
In this talk, I argue that the “realization” of history is an important aim of Tolkien’s art. Tolkien’s desire to create a new mythology for England, which is well known, is in part a response to the shifting ground upon which he stood, in reaction to what Marx and Engels in the Communist Manifestohad called the “constant revolutionizing” and the “cosmopolitan character” of bourgeois society, industrial civilization, imperialism, and the rise of monopoly capital. Tolkien’s yearning for a mythic past, despite its clear nationalism and chauvinism at first, reflected a deep desire to connect his modern world with an …
Other Than Him: Superman As The Alien That Made Good, Roy Schwartz
Other Than Him: Superman As The Alien That Made Good, Roy Schwartz
Mythcon
When discussing depictions of the alien in American popular culture—as extraterrestrial, as strange foreigner, and as both, an otherworldly Other—the most famous example is rarely considered; SUPERMAN. Introduced in 1938, this strange visitor from another planet possesses powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men but walks among us disguised as a mild-mannered human. He’s the fantastic hiding in plain sight as the most mundane, an Other beloved as familiar, a singular being of another race who’s come to symbolize the best in humanity. And not by accident. Superman was created by two Cleveland teens, Jerry Siegel and Joe …
