Benjamin Compson : Consciousness, Rhetoric, And The 'Fictive Art', Ann Brooke Lewis
Benjamin Compson : Consciousness, Rhetoric, And The 'Fictive Art', Ann Brooke Lewis
Master's Theses
A study of consciousness in the first section of The Sound and the Fury clarifies both the novel's technique and its rendering of human truth. My reading of this monologue is based on the premise that the way Benjamin Compson views the world and the way in which his mind arranges those views enhances our understanding of the novel's other brother-narrators, Quentin and Jason. As limited and distorted as Benjy's perceptions may be, they provide a model by which the perceptions of Quentin and Jason gain clarity and meaning. Benjy's monologue begins the novel and provides the reader's entrance into …

Four Major Image Patterns In The Poetry Of May Swenson, Ruth Ida Penque
Four Major Image Patterns In The Poetry Of May Swenson, Ruth Ida Penque
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
May Swenson's poetry contains four major image patterns: (1) sexual/sensual, (2) birth, (3) plant and (4) animal. These patterns work together to support a single unifying theme in Swenson's work: respect for all forms of life and for the natural world. This thesis devotes one chapter to each specific pattern. Chapter two analyzes sexual/sensual imagery which emphasizes the need for mutual respect in sexual relationships as well as for respect for the natural environment. This pattern is divided into three subcategories: (1) sexual/sensual imagery supporting themes dealing specifically with sexual roles and relationships, (2) sexual/sensual imagery celebrating the sexuality of …

Educational, Sociocultural, And Phonological Obstacles For The Japanese Learner Of English, David Howard Waterbury
Educational, Sociocultural, And Phonological Obstacles For The Japanese Learner Of English, David Howard Waterbury
Dissertations and Theses
Every Japanese high school student studies English for at least six years. However, the results of this study, especially in speaking, are poor. In the present study, educational, sociocultural, and linguistic obstacles to learning for the Japanese student are considered.
An educational system oriented toward passing college and university entrance examinations has distorted English curriculum. Furthermore, English teachers in Japan lack proficiency in the language. The teaching staffs and materials of language schools are poorly regulated.
Concern with relative status, group identification, and loss of face acts as a deterrent to learning. For many learners the wrong type of motivation …

Exploring Don Quixote's Madness, W. A. Reeves
Exploring Don Quixote's Madness, W. A. Reeves
Student Scholarship
The paper Exploring Don Quixote's Madness by W.A. Reeves delves into the psychological and philosophical dimensions of Miguel de Cervantes’ iconic character, Don Quixote. The study examines Don Quixote’s transition from a mundane existence as Alonso Quijano into the idealistic yet delusional knight-errant. Reeves contextualizes this transformation within the psychological dynamics of will, judgment, and imagination, suggesting that Don Quixote’s madness stems from the repression of these inner forces in his earlier, unfulfilled life.
Through a detailed analysis, the paper highlights how Don Quixote’s escapades embody both the noble pursuit of idealism and the pitfalls of losing touch with reality. …
