The Function Of Self-Consciousness In John Barth's Chimera, Marilyn Edelstein Apr 1984

The Function Of Self-Consciousness In John Barth's Chimera, Marilyn Edelstein

English

Much recent American fiction has become increasingly self-conscious, displaying an awareness of itself as fiction, as artifice that diminishes the role of a central human consciousness or self in the fiction. The fictional process is in the foreground of much contemporary fiction where the narrative human presence once was. Yet, both fictional process and human presence serve similar structural functions within the text, which suggests that the creation of a fiction resembles the creation of a human self, real or imaginary. The provisional reality of self-conscious fiction is like the provisional reality of the "post-modern" self, prone to self-questioning, constituted …

A Linguist Looks At Tolkien's Elvish, Thomas S. Donahue Jan 1984

A Linguist Looks At Tolkien's Elvish, Thomas S. Donahue

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

A somewhat playful look at Tolkien’s invented languages, deducing some of the rules for evolution from Proto-Eldarian to Quenya then Sindarin and offering possible derivations for a number of hobbit words and names. Donahue’s conclusion is that Tolkien’s inventive sense was “puckish” and sprang from “a penchant for drollery.” Followed by Comments by Paul Nolan Hyde rebutting a number of Donahue’s points, a Reply by Donahue, and a Rejoinder by Hyde.

A Raid On The Inarticulate: The Problem Of Language In The Poetry Of W.S. Merwin, Anthony G. Stocks Jan 1984

A Raid On The Inarticulate: The Problem Of Language In The Poetry Of W.S. Merwin, Anthony G. Stocks

Honors Papers

In this paper, I hope to examine Merwin's ultimately successful quest for such a language and such a myth. Beginning with a brief description of his early work, in which the problem of language becomes a seemingly insuperable barrier to an understanding of the world, I wish to demonstrate his gradual evolution of a poetic voice which is both contemporary and universal. Of course, a study of this length will inevitably be marred by a certain amount of over-generalization and simplification. Merwin's struggle with language has been a long and arduous one, and he has explored many byways on the …

Mythcon Programs

Welcome to the Mythopoeic Society's 14th annual Conference. This year we have more people attending from greater distances than any previous year, many of which have come to give papers. This will make for an even greater exchange of ideas and variety of perspectives. Whether you are from near or far, I hope you will take time to become better acquainted with the others present. The annual conferences are similar to a family reunion for many, who only see many of their mythopoeic friends this one time a year. I hope for those who are here for the first time …

Don Leon, Byron, And Homosexual Law Reform, Louis Crompton Jul 1983

Don Leon, Byron, And Homosexual Law Reform, Louis Crompton

Department of English: Faculty Publications

The origin of the anonymous poem entitled Don Leon, written in the 1830s but known to us only in an edition of 1866, is one of the mysteries of English literary history. The title page describes the work as "A Poem by Lord Byron, Author of Childe Harold, Don Juan, &c., &c. and Forming Part of the Private Journal of His Lordship, Supposed to Have Been Entirely Destroyed by Thos. Moore," but it is less and more than this. Byron had died in 1824 and his memoirs were burned shortly after by a committee of friends and other interested …

Some Measures Of Ulysses, June Sinclair May 1983

Some Measures Of Ulysses, June Sinclair

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Contemporary literary theorists, very much aware of themselves as constituting a break in, and a refutation of, an entire classical metaphysics, are trying to prove that James Joyce, the foremost prose writer of the twentieth century, writing when that classical view was falling from grace and the modern perspective was forcing itself upon the intellectual world, is, in fact, in his work--all works considered as one work-undermining the very tradition which critics consider his foundation. Consequently, the way in which Ulysses and Finnegans Wake are read and valued will be linked to an entire theory of literature. The body of …

The Search For Origins: Some Contemporary Views On Poetry And Possibility, David Franke Mar 1983

The Search For Origins: Some Contemporary Views On Poetry And Possibility, David Franke

Honors Theses

Too often it is the habit of critics to create a realm of philosophy that removes itself from the very subject which it aims to clarify or refine. This paper attempts to avoid that mistake by grounding the philosophical ideas explicated in the first section of the paper in practical applications to the poetry of Mark Strand, A.R. Ammons and others. Briefly, the beginning sets up an idealogical framework that focuses on the poet's introspective search for the origins of his art. Drawing heavily on the criticism of Maurice Blanchot, the phenomonological philosophy of Martin Heidegger , and the philosophical …
