A Few Still Later Words On Translating Homer, Or C. S. Calverley And The Victorian Parodic, Patrick G. Scott

Argues (largely in the style of Matthew Arnold) that the Victorian verse parodist C.S. Calverley can best be understood through 19th century ideas of verse translation, and especially through the writing on parody of the Scottish lawyer Alexander Fraser Tytler, Lord Woodhouselee, in his Essay on the Principles of Translation (1792).

The Function Of Forest In The Faerie Queene: Seeing The Woods For The Trees, Nicholas Randell Jan 1987

The Function Of Forest In The Faerie Queene: Seeing The Woods For The Trees, Nicholas Randell

Honors Papers

Generally, the mention of place in regard to The Faerie Queene summons up the image of Alma's House of Temperance, the Bower of Bliss, or Isis' Temple. These settings are highly stagey: the narrative comes to a halt) and the reader is expected to interpret the composite images of the scene. The crocodile at Isis' feet enjoys the same relationship to her as justice does to equity. Equity, its allegorical representative embodied in Isis, exercises a restraining influence over the "cruel doome" of Justice, i.e., the crocodile that Isis stands on. These places smack of the unreal; they and their …

Italo Calvino: A Writer Fascinated With Form, Ann Ellsworth Jan 1987

Italo Calvino: A Writer Fascinated With Form, Ann Ellsworth

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Italo Calvino is a twentieth-century writer whose work reflects a transition from realism or neorealism to postmodernism. This thesis will explore how that shift occurred. I will show how Calvino's early fascination with form, especially the techniques of oral storytelling, led to a later focus on form in his boldly experimental works. In the first chapter I will point out the early signs of fantasy in Calvino's neorealistic novel, The Path to the Nest of Spiders. This novel's affinity to folktales and use of fantasy foretell Calvino's subsequent contributions to these literary genres. I will discuss how Calvino's work with …

Gerard Manley Hopkins: The Struggle For Poetic Vision, Kathryn M. Fessler Apr 1986

Gerard Manley Hopkins: The Struggle For Poetic Vision, Kathryn M. Fessler

Honors Theses

In this study, I will trace the developmetn and history of Hopkins' struggle to realize and live by a vision of an immanent God, using as the gauge of his progress the poems, which are the celarest expressions of Hopkins' heart. I will illustrate the chronological progression of this vision in the poetry, and discuss specific poems in terms of their places in the history of Hopkins' life as a poet and a priest. I will also pay some degree of attention to linguistic innovations in the poetry, since these are manifestations of Hopkins' liberation from certain formal constraints made …

"Are You Speaking?": A Speech Act Analysis Of Pinter's A Kind Of Alaska And No Man's Land, Brian M. Britt Jan 1986

"Are You Speaking?": A Speech Act Analysis Of Pinter's A Kind Of Alaska And No Man's Land, Brian M. Britt

Honors Papers

My purpose, however, lies not only in a desire to contribute insight to the critical canon on Pinter. I also wish to offer some insight into the literary application of speech act theory. Among the writers I will discuss are Austin, Searle, Altieri, Pratt, Derrida, and Fish. This application leads to my belief that drama is the literary genre to which speech act theory is most appropriate and applicable (in much the same way as the poem serves as the New Critical model). I will begin with a brief introduction to speech act theory, move on to my analysis of …

Tatape Pekkappɨh Sun Killer (Cottontail And The Sun), Jon P. Dayley Jan 1986

Tatape Pekkappɨh Sun Killer (Cottontail And The Sun), Jon P. Dayley

English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations

COMMENTS: The following Shoshone tale, Tatape Pekkappɨh "Sun Killer," also known as "Cottontail and the Sun, " was told to me in 1968 at Fort Hall, Idaho, by Mrs. Myrtle Nevada. I recorded the tale on tape and later transcribed, translated, and linguistically analyzed it with the aid of Mrs. Nevada's niece, Mrs. Lillian Vallely. Mrs. Nevada was a well-known storyteller and had been telling tales like this for many years. She was in her late seventies in 1968, and unfortunately, like most of the other great Shoshone natɨkwinnawappinnɨɨ "storytellers," she has since passed away. The tale was told in …

Effective Ideation In Written Text: A Functional Approach To Clarity And Exigence, Barbara Couture Jan 1986

Effective Ideation In Written Text: A Functional Approach To Clarity And Exigence, Barbara Couture

Department of English: Faculty Publications

As scholars and writers, we no doubt have more than once uttered 'I tried to write that piece today, but I didn't have any good ideas.' And oddly enough that lament often follows tireless sessions when we have generated lots and lots of ideas on paper, but none we regard as 'good.' Though the problem of distinguishing a 'good' idea in writing has plagued generations of writers and many more readers, scholars have not yet produced a FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION of the written communication of a valued idea.

In my view, a functional description of effective ideation in written text should …

Bridging Epistemologies And Methodologies: Research In Written Language Function, Barbara Couture Jan 1986

Bridging Epistemologies And Methodologies: Research In Written Language Function, Barbara Couture

Department of English: Faculty Publications

This book is about written language functions and about written language research. The essays here are united in their investigation of language as social action-an approach to textual study that crosses traditional boundaries of discipline and method to uncover what written language is, how it works, how it affects readers, and what it demands of authors.

The functional approaches to written text presented here are most closely related to the work of scholars from the so-called London School of Linguistics as reinterpreted in the systemic linguistics of Michael Halliday and his followers. The London School challenged investigations of language in …

Visionary Excitability And George Eliot: Judeo-Mythic Narrative Technique In Daniel Deronda, Barbara Stufflebeem Jan 1986

Visionary Excitability And George Eliot: Judeo-Mythic Narrative Technique In Daniel Deronda, Barbara Stufflebeem

Honors Papers

Readers of Daniel Deronda have long noted the tension in the novel between the so-called "Jewish" and "English" halves, and understandably so. Not only are the lives of Gwendolen's carefully drawn psychological portrait contrasts strongly with the air of myth and prophecy in Deronda's discovery of his heritage and destiny. Critics, following Leavis in The Great Tradition, have considered Deronda's story vastly inferior to Gwendolen's, an unbelievable moral fairy-tale peopled with flat characters. But if we consider the novel, ans the Deronda story especially, as constructed with an awareness of a characteristically Judaic narrative style we can see both as …
