A Feminist Critic Responds To Recurring Student Questions About Dickinson, Cheryl Walker Jan 1989

A Feminist Critic Responds To Recurring Student Questions About Dickinson, Cheryl Walker

Scripps Faculty Publications and Research

Book abstract:

The life and the range of topics and tones of Emily Dickinson suit her to be included in such courses as American literature, Romanticism, realism, nineteenth-century culture, and women’s literary traditions. Her poetry poses numerous challenges for readers because of its compressed style, indeterminacy, and constant surprises; her biography fascinates students and critics alike.

This volume emphasizes instruction of Dickinson’s poetry at the undergraduate level. Like other volumes in the MLA’s Approaches to Teaching World Literature series, it is divided into two parts. The first, “Materials,” discusses editions of Dickinson’s poetry, aids to teaching, reference works, biographies, critical …

Escaping The Alphabet: The Reading Of Silence In The Novels Of Virginia Woolf, Patricia Laurence Jan 1989

Escaping The Alphabet: The Reading Of Silence In The Novels Of Virginia Woolf, Patricia Laurence

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The exploration of the theme and narration of silence in Virginia Woolf's novels in this dissertation brings under scrutiny nothing less than her perceptions of the nature of gender, being, mind, knowledge and language. Woolf, searching for a language of mind amid changing concepts of mind in the twentieth century, creates a new rhetoric of silence. In defining silence as a "presence" and not just an "absence" in life and narration, Woolf displaces the privileged place of the "speaking subject" and speech or dialogue in the novel. In Chapter 1, there is an attempt to define what "silence" is in …

Multiple Identities/Multiple Narrative Strategies: Maxine Hong Kingston's The Woman Warrior, Gabrielle N. Dean Jan 1989

Multiple Identities/Multiple Narrative Strategies: Maxine Hong Kingston's The Woman Warrior, Gabrielle N. Dean

Honors Papers

The Chinese never meant to stay in America. The eventual integration -- or lack thereof -- of those sojourners, fortune seekers, and refugees into mainstream America was for many an economic accident, a cruel mishap twice as bitter to swallow when longing for Home was burdened with racism and ignorance of the American barbarians. Some did return (and had their American nest eggs confiscated by the Communists) but for those unfortunates who had to stay, the dream of going back to China was a taste in the mouth, verbalized and daily pressed upon the palates of offspring and kin.

Children …

Virginia Woolf's Double Discourse, Pamela L. Caughie Jan 1989

Virginia Woolf's Double Discourse, Pamela L. Caughie

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Written by a feminist (Virginia Woolf), for a bisexual (Vita Sackville-West), about an androgyne (Orlando), the novel Orlando would seem to be the quintessential feminist text. And that, indeed, is what it is in danger of becoming, just as Woolf is in danger of becoming the acclaimed Mother of Us All. In promoting Virginia Woolf's Orlando as a feminist work, feminist critics have picked the right text, but for the wrong reasons. Orlando works as a feminist text not because of what it says about sexual identity but because of what it manages not to say; not because of what …
