The Poetry Of Geoffrey Bache Smith With Special Note Of Tolkienian Contexts, Kris Swank Jun 2021

The Poetry Of Geoffrey Bache Smith With Special Note Of Tolkienian Contexts, Kris Swank

Journal of Tolkien Research

Following the Great War (1914–1918), J.R.R. Tolkien edited the poetry collection A Spring Harvest (1918) by his close friend, Lieutenant Geoffrey Bache Smith (October 18, 1894 – December 3, 1916), who died of wounds from shrapnel while stationed on the Somme. According to John Garth, it was “one of the many slim, sad volumes of poetry published posthumously as a memorial of those who died in war.” A spring harvest is a barren harvest, but even at his young age, Smith left a number of stirring poems on life, death, and destiny that seem, in retrospect, to have prophesied his …

Translatio Materiae: Spenser, The Humanists, And A Poetics Of Matter, Victoria Florio Pipas Jun 2021

Translatio Materiae: Spenser, The Humanists, And A Poetics Of Matter, Victoria Florio Pipas

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

In this paper, I propose that sixteenth-century humanist descriptions of Rome’s decay, together with paradigms of translatio imperii and studii, shaped Edmund Spenser’s poetic conceptualization of matter. I identify a new translatio in Spenser’s corpus, translatio materiae—matter’s movement or change—born from Spenser’s contact with Joachim du Bellay’s sonnet sequence, Les Antiquitez de Rome (1553). Translatio materiae runs through Spenser’s corpus as depicted matter’s resurrection from states of decay into material afterlives as narrative object or poetic device. Where early humanists, with recourse to the division between earthly mutability and heavenly permanence, lament Rome, Spenser favors matter’s potential for …

Dual Immersion Programs: Are They Enough?, Samantha Renae Castillo Jun 2021

Dual Immersion Programs: Are They Enough?, Samantha Renae Castillo

Canterbury Scholars

This study asks: How do middle school students attending a Spanish and English dual immersion program develop their biliteracy skills differently based on the extent of their exposure to and practice of both languages in the home environment? Deborah Brandt argues that sponsors invest in literacy tools in order to give other people access to language resources, allowing communication to be fostered through the passing on of information, as done between different generations. This research project examines how literacy sponsorship outside of the classroom impacts an individual’s bilingual development overall. In a pilot version of this study with two participants, …

Written Corrective Feedback In Efl: Combining Error Codes And Metalinguistic Explanation, Yoshimasa Ogawa Jun 2021

Written Corrective Feedback In Efl: Combining Error Codes And Metalinguistic Explanation, Yoshimasa Ogawa

Journal of Response to Writing

The present study evaluated the effects of a combined form of written corrective feedback (WCF) on English as a foreign language (EFL) students’ writing accuracy. The combined WCF consisted of unfocused error-code WCF and focused metalinguistic explanation. Different forms of WCF were administered to two groups of Japanese EFL students in two consecutive years, and the effects of the feedback were compared based on the number of grammatical errors that the students made before and after receiving feedback. The original version (single combined WCF) provided metalinguistic explanation only once for each of eight target grammatical forms, whereas the intensive version …

Efl Learners’ Multiple Identities Constructions In Relation To Global Positions Of English, Farah Anjanillah, Ribut Wahyudi, Syafiyah Syafiyah Jun 2021

Efl Learners’ Multiple Identities Constructions In Relation To Global Positions Of English, Farah Anjanillah, Ribut Wahyudi, Syafiyah Syafiyah

The Qualitative Report

In English as Foreign Language (EFL) learning, the learners’ identities have been intriguing to be explored by the linguists. Norton (2010) argues English learning does not deal with knowledge and skill acquisition alone, instead it also comprises a complex process of the learners’ identities, constructions, and reconstructions. Hence, English learning enables the shaping of English learners’ multiple identities. This study was conducted in one of the Islamic universities (IU) in Malang, Indonesia. The multilingual and multicultural contexts of Indonesia is a crucial factor to conduct this study. These social conditions do also underpin the constructions of English learners’ multiple identities …

Give Me Liberty Or Give Me (Double) Consciousness: Literacy, Orality, Print, And The Cultural Formation Of Black American Identity In Harriet Jacobs’S Incidents In The Life Of A Slave Girl And Octavia Butler’S Kindred, Aisha Matthews Jun 2021

Give Me Liberty Or Give Me (Double) Consciousness: Literacy, Orality, Print, And The Cultural Formation Of Black American Identity In Harriet Jacobs’S Incidents In The Life Of A Slave Girl And Octavia Butler’S Kindred, Aisha Matthews

Third Stone

While literacy may have signified the humanity of male slaves in the antebellum South (at least in their own view), the English language and American print culture did not similarly empower female slaves towards positive subject-formation through discourse. This article will examine the tension between oral culture and print culture in Harriet Jacobs’s Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl and Octavia Butler’s Kindred. Ultimately, an analysis of Jacobs’s work through the lens of book history and its power to shape cultural formation will suggest a critical imperative for the contemporary neo-slave narrative genre.

Accordingly, the agency of contemporary …

The Text Of The "Abc Of Aristotle" In The ‘Winchester Anthology’, Ian Cornelius Jun 2021

The Text Of The "Abc Of Aristotle" In The ‘Winchester Anthology’, Ian Cornelius

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The Middle English ABC of Aristotle is an alliterative abecedary poem that survives in fifteen manuscript copies dating between the mid-fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. The most eccentric copy, bearing the greatest number of unique textual variants, is in London, British Library, Additional 60577, a commonplace book and miscellany of verse and prose known today as the ‘Winchester Anthology’. The Winchester copy of the ABC of Aristotle is distinguished from all others by changes to vocabulary, idiom, and prosody. The result is a unique redaction, illustrating the kind of literary composition that could be expected to grow out of late …

Finding Home In Merry Hill: Appalachia Beyond The Mountains In Arnow's The Dollmaker, Adrienne Oliver Jun 2021

Finding Home In Merry Hill: Appalachia Beyond The Mountains In Arnow's The Dollmaker, Adrienne Oliver

Masters Theses

The migration of Gertie Nevels in Arnow’s The Dollmaker from Appalachian Kentucky to Detroit examines the tense relationship between two vastly different cultures forced together in the city. Gertie’s identity as a strong, capable Appalachian woman used to the agrarian lifestyle of 1940s Kentucky struggles to find roots in the mechanized world of Detroit. In the city, Gertie faces fervent rejection of her Appalachian culture. She finds that Detroit society encourages her to adapt to the cultural norms of the city and put away her Appalachian practices. However, Gertie’s ability to adapt to the social demands of the city does …

The Prevalence Of Grammar In Virginia Higher Education, Caroline Nicatie Stimpson Jun 2021

The Prevalence Of Grammar In Virginia Higher Education, Caroline Nicatie Stimpson

Masters Theses

This thesis describes why the prescriptive grammar model should be implemented in public education rather than the descriptive grammar model. For the purposes of this paper, prescriptive grammar refers to how words ought to be used, while descriptive grammar refers to how words are used by native speakers in natural settings. The central issue I address in this thesis is how prescriptive grammar enables students to read and write properly, heightens their linguistic knowledge, improves their ability to express themselves, and teaches them useful skills for future educational and employment opportunities. Additionally, it outlines the flaws inherent in the descriptive …

Reading The World: American Haredi Children's Literature, 1980–2000, Dainy Bernstein Jun 2021

Reading The World: American Haredi Children's Literature, 1980–2000, Dainy Bernstein

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Children’s literature is an important force in building not only linguistic literacy but a literacy of the world, showing the child reader how to make sense of themselves in relation to the many people, objects, experiences, and concepts around them. Haredi children’s texts foster a mode of understanding the world around them as comprehensible through the texts, people, and events of the past. In Reading the World, I demonstrate that Haredi children’s textual culture between 1980 and 2000 fostered a literacy of language, text, time, space, morals, and general knowledge as inextricably intertwined, and that this literacy propelled further …

Recognizing The Silent Truth: Subversive Silences In Character Development Of Marginalized Identities, Sara L. Bartling May 2021

Recognizing The Silent Truth: Subversive Silences In Character Development Of Marginalized Identities, Sara L. Bartling

English Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

While looking at literature, theatre, and film and the development of characters, it is essential to acknowledge the intersectionality of various components of one's identity, the multi-dimensional view that all identities are composed of a complex tapestry consisting of multiple identifiers. This thesis will examine the sociological and psychological processes that contribute to the subject identifying with a particular identity, and thereby the discarding of other potentially exclusive identities. Using established theories from Foucault and Spivak, this study will utilize several texts to specifically examine the significance of silence on the part of the subject when placing themselves in one …

Decolonizing The Body, Daniel Miess May 2021

Decolonizing The Body, Daniel Miess

English (MA) Theses

The prevailing narrative about California’s history, and in specific the way that it discusses the Spanish Colonial system and the Gold Rush, glosses over the genocide of her indigenous inhabitants and the oppression experienced by those who survived these historical traumas. By focusing on the works of three indigenous poets (Deborah Miranda, Natalie Diaz, and Tommy Pico) who were born in Southern California and whose indigenous history predates White Settler Colonialism in this state, we can gain a fuller picture about the truth of California’s past. Through the lens of Indigenous Queer Theory, we can understand how these three Queer …

Using Big Data To Facilitate A Lyrical Analysis Of Poetry And Rap, Remington Yve Giller May 2021

Using Big Data To Facilitate A Lyrical Analysis Of Poetry And Rap, Remington Yve Giller

English Undergraduate Distinction Projects

Poetry and rap are dissected using text mining techniques in order to determine overall trends in the words used by both. With this data, the way in which ideas and concepts are expressed can be compared and contrasted as a way of showing the legitimacy of rap as a form of literary expression. Other topics within the paper are: a background of the history of rap and the digital humanities, and an example of a close reading featuring a medieval poem and a rap by Eminem. This demonstrates how even in a traditional way of handling texts, both poetry and …

Hermeneutic Analysis Of The Text In Uzbek Classic Lyrics, Musajan Tadjibayev May 2021

Hermeneutic Analysis Of The Text In Uzbek Classic Lyrics, Musajan Tadjibayev

Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal

Uzbeks are very curious people and always like to learn something new. That’s why from Ancient times our ancestors had strong relationships with not only countries of Asia but also the countries of the world. And indeed, they exchanged their cultures and national riches with each other. In these exchanges the literature has no considerable place.

Linguocognitive Analysis Of The Concept Of "Death" In Uzbek And English Euphemisms, Dildora Bakhriddionova May 2021

Linguocognitive Analysis Of The Concept Of "Death" In Uzbek And English Euphemisms, Dildora Bakhriddionova

Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal

Knowing and perceiving objects and events in reality is a structured activity that involves several logical-spiritual actions. In order to understand this activity, the science of cognitology, which emerged in the 19th century as a unique field in linguistics, plays an important role. With the help of cognitive linguistics, which is an integral part of cognitology, we can scientifically study the events that take place in our thinking. If we study euphemisms, which are considered to be a factor in the development of a society's culture, through cognitive analysis, we will get a glimpse of their essence and meaning. As …

Developing Vocabulary Of Efl Learners Through Short-Stories, Umida Khamroeva May 2021

Developing Vocabulary Of Efl Learners Through Short-Stories, Umida Khamroeva

Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal

It is irrefutable that vocabulary plays an important role in the academic life of EFL learners. This is because foreign language learners' lack of vocabulary significantly impairs other language skills. Therefore, teaching and learning vocabulary in a foreign language classroom is a very important place. In doing so, a variety of methods and strategies are used to develop the vocabulary of EFL learners. However, the success of the methodology, strategy, or material used will depend on the nature of the material and the EFL learner's perception of that methodology, strategy, and material. In that regard, this thesis seeks to investigate …

Noisy Transgressions: Gendered Noise, Female Voices, And Noisy Narration In Anne Bronte's The Tenant Of Wildfell Hall, Brianna Phillips May 2021

Noisy Transgressions: Gendered Noise, Female Voices, And Noisy Narration In Anne Bronte's The Tenant Of Wildfell Hall, Brianna Phillips

English MA Theses

This thesis re-evaluates Anne Brontë’s critically undervalued novel The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848) through its noisy women. By joining the fields of narratology and noise studies, I argue for the subversive noisiness of a novel that has been overwhelmingly dismissed by critics as a text of female silence, subjugation, and subordination. However, by offering a soundscape of gendered noise and proliferating female voices, Brontë privileges the sounds of women’s voices in such a way that female noise “re-voices” the masculine origins of the novel (Gilbert Markham’s frame narrative). Contrary to traditional readings of Brontë’s heroine, Helen Huntingdon proves subversively …

The Intricacies Of Counting To Four In Old English Poetry, Ian Cornelius, Eric Weiskott May 2021

The Intricacies Of Counting To Four In Old English Poetry, Ian Cornelius, Eric Weiskott

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The metrical theory devised by Eduard Sievers and refined by A. J. Bliss forms the basis for most current scholarship on Old English meter. A weakness of the Sievers–Bliss theory is that it occupies a middle ground between two levels of analytic description, distinguished by Roman Jakobson in an influential article as ‘verse instance’ and ‘verse design’. Metrists in the Sievers–Bliss tradition employ a concept of metrical position (a key component of verse design), yet the focus of attention usually remains on the contours of stress of individual verses. Important exceptions are the studies of Thomas Cable and Nicolay Yakovlev. …
