Mother Goose: Survives And Thrives In The ‘80s, Anita Van Lancker Jan 1989

Mother Goose: Survives And Thrives In The ‘80s, Anita Van Lancker

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to show that Mother Goose endures. The researcher expected that by looking at the more recent versions, one could see how these versions differed from the original in language and illustration. Content analysis was conducted to determine the extent of change in the language and illustrations of six selected Mother Goose nursery rhymes from thirteen copyrighted original collections from 1968-1988. Rhymes were compared with original rhymes as represented in The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes to determine the degree of change in both the language and the illustrations. A data gathering instrument was used …

A New Poem By Samuel Taylor Coleridge, James C. Mckusick May 1987

A New Poem By Samuel Taylor Coleridge, James C. Mckusick

English Faculty Publications

The poem published here is transcribed from an original holograph manuscript in the Berg Collection of the New York Public Library. The poem is a fragmentary verse translation of the Song of Deborah (from Judges 5). Its existence has been known to Coleridge scholars for several years, and its authenticity seems unquestionable. Kathleen Coburn mentions it in her edition of Coleridge's Notebooks: "The ms was with Coleridge's 'German Journal' of 1798-9 on acquisition by the library, but whether only accidentally there is not known. It appears to be fairly early." To this remark I can add my own observation that …

Repossessing The Past: Discontinuity And History In Alfred Kazin's A Walker In The City, John D. Hazlett

English Faculty Publications

The structure of Kazin's A Walker in the City is based upon two quests: the child self is seeking an American identity and access to history; the adult self is seeking to recapture the lost, earlier self and to "escape" from history. The article discusses narrative strategy and the relationship between concepts of history and the re-creation of the self in twentieth century autobiography.

A Survey Of Mormon Literary Criticism, Colin B. Douglas Jan 1978

A Survey Of Mormon Literary Criticism, Colin B. Douglas

Theses and Dissertations

Three general questions concerning literature have been addressed by the writers considered in this thesis: What constitutes a work of literary art? What ought to be valued by Latter-day Saints in a literary work? How should criticism be conducted by Latter-day Saints? To the first question, five basic answers have been proposed: significant form, uplifting thought content clothed in decorative form, typological symbol, ikon (as the word is used by C S lewis in An Experiment in Criticism), and capacity for helping the reader achieve a kind of "negative capability." These definitions also tend to be statements of value, …

Milton And The Classical Tradition : An Annotated Bibliography, Mary Lou Myrick Jan 1975

Milton And The Classical Tradition : An Annotated Bibliography, Mary Lou Myrick

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Because of the mainly scholarly studies of Milton’s works, and the many questions that have yet to be resolved, an annotated bibliography of Milton’s classicism is indispensable in enabling one to survey the ground that has been covered and to clarify the issues further. The observation that John M. Steadman makes about Paradise Lost also applies to Milton’s entire canon.

The items in this bibliography are organized in five categories: (1) epic, (2) tragedy, (3) prose, (4) minor poetry, and (5) general criticism. Listings within these categories are alphabetical.

Milton's Eve : A Comparison With Eve In The Major Analogues Preceding Paradise Lost, Charlene Dellinger Wheeler Jan 1974

Milton's Eve : A Comparison With Eve In The Major Analogues Preceding Paradise Lost, Charlene Dellinger Wheeler

Master's Theses

Milton's character of Eve in Paradise Lost has been interpreted by critics as both the vehicle for Milton's abuse of women, and the example of Milton's favoritism towards them. The great variety of interpretations of the same character seems to be the result of not considering Milton's Eve as a combination of qualities gathered from both the Biblical and literary traditions and influenced by Milton's theological beliefs and his intentions for Paradise Lost. By comparing Milton's Eve with her major predecessors, this thesis will interpret Milton's characterization according to the literary history of the character, and show how Milton's particular …

The Condor's Quill : An Analytical And Historical Study Of The Style Of Herman Melville's Moby Dick, Eleanor Burgess Kramer Jan 1962

The Condor's Quill : An Analytical And Historical Study Of The Style Of Herman Melville's Moby Dick, Eleanor Burgess Kramer

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In commencing the study of the style of Moby Dick, the student is confronted with several questions. Most important, perhaps, is the question of how much the style has contributed to the importance of the book, to the great adulation accorded it by many critics during the last quarter century.

Did Melville’s peculiar ways of expressing his ideas have some particularly timely appeal to the post-WWI Generation? It is a highly mannered style, unique as that of Tristram Shandy. Yet while Sterne’s book was greatly enjoyed by the author’s contemporaries, Moby-Dick aroused very little contemporary interest. Was the style of …

The Development Of English Grammar From 1750 To 1929, Helen Kathryn Walsh May 1929

The Development Of English Grammar From 1750 To 1929, Helen Kathryn Walsh

Bachelors’ Theses

For some time I have been interested in the subject of Grammar. A generation ago, it was considered one of the most important subjects in the elementary schools. But now, grammar is a thing one teaches only incidentally. What has brought this change? What is the situation to-day? What may we hope for in the future? These are some of the questions which need to be answered. The pendulum has indeed swung far out into empty space. It surely must return. Will we be able to stop it midway in its course?

Cardinal Newman And Christina Rossetti: Contrasted From A Religious And Literary Point Of View, M. Rosenda Sullivan Jun 1928

Cardinal Newman And Christina Rossetti: Contrasted From A Religious And Literary Point Of View, M. Rosenda Sullivan

Bachelors’ Theses

Literature is a magic wand possessed of the power to transport the dwellers of earth away from this sphere of sordid reality into a fairy palace of ecstatic joy. It is the sesame to a world of pleasure indiscoverable in the actual world. Truly it is, to use the words of a poet, "The touch of a vanished hand And the bound of a voice that is still," for through it as a medium the spirits of men and of races long since turned to dust reinhabit their discarded bodies to appear in life-appareled form and re-act time's changeful drama …
