Silas Marner: George Eliot And Mme Le Prince De Beaumont, Terence Dawson

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

At the beginning of chapter 15 of Silas Marner (1861), there is a reference to a well-known fairy tale. The paragraph is as follows:

That famous ring that pricked its owner when he forgot duty and followed desire - - I wonder if it pricked very hard when he set out on the chase, or whether it pricked but lightly then, and only pierced to the quick when the chase had long been ended, and hope, folding her wings, looked backward and became regret? (Penguin ed., p. 191)

Joseph Wiesenfarth has identified the fairy tale as 'Prince Darling.' He quotes …

Curved Like An Eye, George Perreault Jan 1988

Curved Like An Eye, George Perreault

Ahsahta Press

George Perreault’s Curved Like an Eye is an entrancing collection of works that explore personal loss and the resolution of love. It is a hard, distinct poetry in which the author prods the dark impulse of humanity and its own ache for renewal—its Spring when, as with the Ruminari, all possessions are burnt ceremoniously—leaving the spirit “clean, naked.” Perreault searches his own memory, his own yearnings, and finds not meaning or understanding, but brilliant and often haunting fragments of images tied to half-recollections of passions and vague motives. If at times he finds himself “clean, naked,” it is without denying …

The Portrayal Of The European Immigrant In The Historical Fiction For Children And Young Adults, Gayle T. Wood

Graduate Research Papers

This research study used a content analysis technique to assess the portrayal of the European who emigrated to the United States from Europe between the years of 1832 and 1932. Portrayals were found in 15 works of historical fiction written for children or young adults and published after 1950 in the United States.

Descriptive occurrences in each book were examined for the realistic portrayal of the immigrant experience in six general areas: (1) the Americanization process, (2) the educational experience of the immigrant, (3) employment opportunities, (4) family relations, (5) conditions encountered during the emigration process, and (6) reasons for …

Adam Bede And Riehl's "Social-Political-Conservatism", A.G. Van Den Broek

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

George Eliot's Adam Bede is seen frequently to be a good, but flawed novel, an interesting precursor to the much finer Middlemarch and other later novels. U. C. Knoepflmacher, in George Eliot's Early Novels: The Limits of Realism, considers that, essentially, Eliot shared John MiIton's purpose of justifying "Man's lot in the temporal world." Knoepflmacher adds: "Her own belief in scientific veracity did not allow her to create a supernatural world of essences; yet in her way she shared Milton's purpose. 11 But then he says:

The epic strain that was to find its most complex embodiment in Middlemarch is …

The Pastoral Tradition In Film, Andrew J. Ford Apr 1985

The Pastoral Tradition In Film, Andrew J. Ford

Honors Theses

The pastoral, whether in painting, music, literature, or film, has always attempted to capture that fleeting moment in history, real or unreal, where man is autonomous. The pastoral life occurs only after man has gained a considerable amount of control over nature and before he has found himself controlled by his fellow man or by those common evils made real and specific by civilization. In other words, the pastoral tries to capture or create that period in history where man has conquered the wilderness in some major way, usually by farming or animal herding, but has not yet become involved …

A New Topography: Elizabeth Bishop's Late Poems, Jennifer Soalt

Honors Papers

Geography III, the title of Elizabeth Bishop's last book of poems prepares her readers for both a passage through familiar territory and an exploration of unmapped terrain. A return to the northern landscape of A Cold Spring and the southern landscape of Brazil is promised at the same time that a third and entirely new landscape is hinted at; we can find the Nova Scotia of "At the Fishouses" and "Cape Breton" in "The Moose" and "The End of March" and we can find the tropics of "Song for the Rainy Season" and "The Armadillo" in "Crusoe in England", but …
