Review Of George Eliot's Midlands: Passion In Exile, Graham Handley
Review Of George Eliot's Midlands: Passion In Exile, Graham Handley
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
Various biographies and critical studies argue that Mary Ann or Marian Evans's formative years in the Midlands influenced George Eliot's art. They do so by explaining that memories of Robert Evans contributed to George Eliot's conceptions of Adam Bede and Caleb Garth, that Cheverel Manor is Arbury Hall, that Amos Barton is largely based on the Rev. John Gwyther, the curate of Chilvers Coton whom Mary Ann knew as a child, that a good deal of autobiographical material went into the creation of Maggie Tulliver, and so on.
Is there a need, then, for Graham Handley's George Eliot's Midlands when …

Resolving The Paradox: Thomas Merton, Antipoetry, And The Language Of Silence In The Geography Of Lograire, Barbara J. Hemann
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The paradox in Thomas Merton's life, that of being both poet and priest, has often been studied. Merton himself was torn by this paradox, the need to keep his vow of silence and the need to express himself through language. It is this paradox, the paradox of language and silence and how Merton resolves it in antipoetry, that is examined in this study. Antipoetry provides an answer to many paradoxes Merton finds in his life. Merton, in his autobiography The Seven Storey Mountain, first believed that one must reject the world to embrace God, but later in his life recants …
"Ego, Scriptor Cantilenae": The Cantos And Ezra Pound, Steven R. Gulick
"Ego, Scriptor Cantilenae": The Cantos And Ezra Pound, Steven R. Gulick
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Can poetry "make new" the world? Ezra Pound thought so. In "Cantico del Sole" he said: "The thought of what America would be like/ If the Classics had a wide circulation/ Troubles me in my sleep" (Personae 183). He came to write an 815 page poem called The Cantos in which he presents "fragments" drawn from the literature and documents of the past in an attempt to build a new world, "a paradiso terreste" (The Cantos 802). This may be seen as either a noble gesture or sheer egotism.
Pound once called The Cantos the "tale of the …

Immortal Horrors And Everlasting Splendours: C.S. Lewis' Screwtape Letters And The Great Divorce, Douglas Loney
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Sees Screwtape and The Great Divorce as constituting “something like a sub-genre within the Lewis canon.” Both have explicit religious intention, were written during WWII, and use a “rather informal, episodic structure.” Analyzes the different perspectives of each work, and their treatment of the themes of Body and Spirit, Time and Eternity, and Love.

Feminist Myth In Le Guin's "Sur", Barbara Brown
Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature
Argues that Le Guin has created in “Sur” a “myth of women explorers, a myth of female heroes.” Contrasts the fictional all-female Antarctic expedition with historical examples, the latter focusing on the individual and the former on the collective.

8. Coyote Waits, Manuscript Draft (C)., Tony Hillerman
8. Coyote Waits, Manuscript Draft (C)., Tony Hillerman
Coyote Waits Manuscripts
This is another edited manuscript draft of Coyote Waits, probably from early 1990. The manuscript is 353 pages long and is heavily edited by both Harper and Row editors and Tony Hillerman. This draft appears to be a copy of manuscript draft (B), showing most of the same editing marks (though draft (B) does contain some added story text that does not appear manuscript draft (C)). However, this draft includes a style sheet, a list of personal names and a list of unconfirmed geographical locations used in the story as part of the front matter.
