Characterization In The Novels Of John Galsworthy, Charlie Scott
Characterization In The Novels Of John Galsworthy, Charlie Scott
English Language and Literature ETDs
John Galsworthy said of his novels that they were "a criticism of life." This definition is generally recognized and has been accepted by critics as an approach to the study of his works. This thesis proposes an examination of one specific method by which Galsworthy criticized the life of his times: the grouping of characters of his novels into types representative of the society he knew.
The Metrics, Imagery And Philosophy Of Robert Frost, Gertrude Warner
The Metrics, Imagery And Philosophy Of Robert Frost, Gertrude Warner
English Language and Literature ETDs
The metrical study, based on Frost's blank verse only, was made for the purpose of determining the quality of his blank verse, and the effect produced by the use of substitutions, feminine endings, run-on lines, and end-stop lines. The metrical tables have been compiled after a careful study of 1811 lines of Frost's blank verse. Ten of what are commonly considered among his best poems in blank verse were used as a basis for the study. The metrical findings in the blank verse of each of the five books of the author's poetry have also been tabulated. A final table …

Edward Eggletson: Sources And Backgrounds Of His Novels, Anne Barnes
Edward Eggletson: Sources And Backgrounds Of His Novels, Anne Barnes
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Since Edward Eggleston’s materials for his Hoosier novels are based upon his own experiences and observations, it is necessary to know something of him in his actual environment. To understand how the events and conditions equipped him to be the fictional historian of this part of the Middle West, a rapid survey of his biography is essential.
The Kentucky Novels Of James Lane Allen, Hessie Brister Ivey
The Kentucky Novels Of James Lane Allen, Hessie Brister Ivey
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Kentucky, following in the footsteps of her parent state, Virginia, has given to America some of her most distinguished statesmen. She gave to the Confederacy its only president, Jefferson Davis, and to the Federal Union its war president, Abraham Lincoln. Housed in a noble pile of imperishable granite, on its exact original site, near Hodgenville, the humble log cabin in which Lincoln was born is now preserved as a national shrine. At Fairview a towering obelisk marks the birthplace of Jefferson Davis.
These two statesmen were born, one year between them, of the same pioneering stock. One moved north of …

The Neo-Classic Elements In Cowley's Works, Leonard C. Scweitzer
The Neo-Classic Elements In Cowley's Works, Leonard C. Scweitzer
Bachelors’ Theses
The purpose of this work is to bring to the reader's knowledge one of the greatest Seventeenth Century poets. An intense treatment would, however, necessitate the writing of volumes for, although Abraham Cowley is now considered by modern critics an unreadable poets, his works are numerous and contain many valuable ideals. To his contemporaries Cowley ranked supreme. John Milton's wife is said to have reported that her husband's favorite English poets were Spenser, Shakespeare, and Cowley. While Dryden declared to one of his associates, "His authority is almost sacred to me."

The Rise And Fall Of The London Patent Theaters: Drury Lane And Covent Garden, Robert J. Buer
The Rise And Fall Of The London Patent Theaters: Drury Lane And Covent Garden, Robert J. Buer
Bachelors’ Theses
"There must be a reason." How many times has the reader heard that phrase? It has become so popular that a national manufacturer has adopted it as a slogan tor his product. The idea behind the phrase is that everything must have an excuse for its existence; if it did not, it would not exist. And so it is with this thesis.
It is the object of this paper to trace the rise. of the English national theater (as represented by Drury Lane and Covent Garden) from its inconspicuous beginning to its peak in the eighteenth century and then to …
The Significance Of The Influence Of The American One-Act Play On The Little Theatre, John H. Hennessey
The Significance Of The Influence Of The American One-Act Play On The Little Theatre, John H. Hennessey
Bachelors’ Theses
The purpose of this thesis shall not be t.o prove, that the American one-act play is the only possible type of drama that has a tendency toward a national drama, but rather to bring to light that the American one-act play, through the influence, which it exerted on the Little Theatre, is the driving force, which strives toward this national dramatic movement. That there is a laxity of and a need for a folk drama and folk-theatre is taken as an indisputable fact.
The one-act playwrights and their one-act plays are discussed, not from the aspect of a criticism of …

The Chivalresque Enfluence On The Don Quijote De La Mancha, Francis Xavier Krembs
The Chivalresque Enfluence On The Don Quijote De La Mancha, Francis Xavier Krembs
Bachelors’ Theses
The Chivalresque Novels are rambling narratives of the great deeds preformed by the various legendary heroes. Some are purely fictitious yet often times they contain facts which are historically correct. They are romantic in every sense of the word. The good always triumphant over the evil and the ending pleasant with the usual rewards and punishments.
In the pages of the Chivalresque Novels, which usually numbered in the thousands, men sought and found refuge from the reality that faced them in life.
Europe was an armed camp when these novels were at the apex of their popularity. No one had …

The Prose Works Of Annette Von Droste-Hulshoff, Helen Isabel Mervash
Bachelors’ Theses
Heredity and environment are important factors in life, but nowhere else do they have as important a role as in the life of a writer. In the works of every writer can be traced the influences of home life, of ancestors, of childhood surroundings and of friends. It has been the author’s purpose to attempt to show the great part Annette von Droste-Hulshoff’s Westphalian environment and tradition have played in her prose works.

Nebraska Folk Cures, Pauline Monette Black
Nebraska Folk Cures, Pauline Monette Black
University of Nebraska Studies in Language, Literature, and Criticism
Folk cures form a conspicuous part of Nebraska lore. Nebraska pioneers from many states and many countries brought with them certain remedies which they believed particularly efficacious, and which became a tradition in families or communities throughout the state. The cures in the following collection have come directly from the residents of the state and are not limited to any specific locality. They have been recorded as nearly as possible just as the informants gave them. Some alterations have been made in diction and sentence structure to clarify ambiguity. The collection is doubtless incomplete, but it lists, I believe, most …
Emerson's Use Of The Bible, Harriet Rodgers Zink
Emerson's Use Of The Bible, Harriet Rodgers Zink
University of Nebraska Studies in Language, Literature, and Criticism
The purpose of the following study is to set forth, as far as a brief treatment will permit, Ralph Waldo Emerson's manner of using the Bible in his writing. That he had a wide knowledge of the book is proved by his numerous allusions to its characters and events, its rites and symbols, its philosophy and laws. Moreover, his method of supporting his contentions by Scripture, the pertinence of his many paraphrases of familiar Biblical allusions, and the ease with which he quotes and applies Scriptural passages clearly demonstrate his possession of remarkable Scriptural knowledge. He quoted the Bible as …

Life And Works Of Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, Lorraine T. Pallanch
Bachelors’ Theses
In this treatise I have attempted to make a study of the life and works of Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Ward. The only material available to me was her autobiography and her numerous works. Since I have been unable to find any critical material other than brief comments published in periodicals at the time of her death, I have discussed rather than criticized her works for the most part.
Points Of Technique In Shakespearian Plays And Their Relation To The Elizabethan Theatres, Marguerite Anne Butler
Points Of Technique In Shakespearian Plays And Their Relation To The Elizabethan Theatres, Marguerite Anne Butler
Bachelors’ Theses
We shall not be able to understand Shakespeare if we try to judge him by modern standards. His technique is closely bound up with the Renaissance society for which he wrote. In my treatise, I have endeavored to interpret the relation between Shakespeare and the-Elizabethan theatre, and to show the influence of the audience, the actors, and the stage upon his technique.
The Study Of Browning's Paracelsus And Its Historical Background, Mary Jane Crangle
The Study Of Browning's Paracelsus And Its Historical Background, Mary Jane Crangle
Bachelors’ Theses
In this treatise I have attempted careful study of Browning's poem Paracelsus. The primary object was to relate the historical life of Paracelsus and to show how correctly it correlated with Browning's poem. Secondly, I sought to analyze the character of Paracelsus as he appeared in his own background and environment, and to state the reasons wherefore Browning used him as the hero of his poem. Lastly, I have tried to outline the various points of philosophy found in the poet's spiritual interpretation of the man, which are universal because they are the eternal questions of mankind today, re-echoing …

The Treatment Of Sir Gawain In English Literature From Geoffrey Of Monmouth To The Twentieth Century, Bertha C. Cook
The Treatment Of Sir Gawain In English Literature From Geoffrey Of Monmouth To The Twentieth Century, Bertha C. Cook
Graduate Thesis Collection
One of the greatest sources for literary productions during the Middle Ages was the material which dealt with King Arthur and his followers. These heroes were very popular, and the fame of their exploits was wide spread. As early as the eleventh century, the Arthurian stories were current in Italy, and some of the episodes were carved in a cathedral in Modena in the early twelfth century. Many romances filled with the adventures of the knights were written in France, and some of the heroes were popular in Germany.
