The Measurement Of Vocabulary Of High School Students : A Study Of The Reliability Of Existing Tests, George Wendell Kellogg Jul 1939

The Measurement Of Vocabulary Of High School Students : A Study Of The Reliability Of Existing Tests, George Wendell Kellogg

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

In view of the number of vocabulary tests that have been made in recent years and the resulting widespread use of estimates based on them, the question of whether or not a reliable absolute estimate of a person ' s vocabulary can be made from existing tests is of paramount importance . Before attacking the problem, it was necessary to define "an individual's vocabulary." It was decided that in this study vocabulary would mean not merely the number of words a person could use, but the total number of words the meanings of which he could recognize. A "reliable estimate" …

De Quincey And The Lake Poets, Samuel Abraham Cohen Apr 1939

De Quincey And The Lake Poets, Samuel Abraham Cohen

Master's Theses

I feel that an investigation into the friend ships between each of the Lake Poets and DeQuincey is worthwhile. The intercourse of these great personalities and the effects they produced on one another are sources of valuable information . It will be the object of this study to present the personal and social lives of the Lake Poets and their devotee, with a view of finding contributions and detractions made to each other by this association.

Ambrose Bierce, Walter Richardson Hudgins Apr 1939

Ambrose Bierce, Walter Richardson Hudgins

Master's Theses

While Bierce is not a great writer, when compared with the really great, he has a peculiar fascination for a select group of readers. And his fame will live more by change than by any general public acclaim. Like many others, I first became acquainted with him purely by accident. Since then I have come to know him better through desire.

Of the scores of people I have asked to give their reaction to Bierce, scacely more than a half dozen professed any knowledge that such a person ever existed. This much I noticed: All of the people who knew …

The European Background In The Novels Of Henry James, Virginia I. Carnefix Jan 1939

The European Background In The Novels Of Henry James, Virginia I. Carnefix

Graduate Thesis Collection

One generation of concentrated money making followed by another generation of diligent application to intellectual concerns resulted in the flowering of a family of minds, the James family, among whom were two who gained international renown, William James, the philosopher, and Henry James (1843-1916), the novelist. Henry James, Sr., who was a Swedenborgian by faith, was devoted equally to a life of thought and to the education of his children. Because he spent his life trying to evolve a philosophy which would place man in a moral relation to his Creator, thereby eliminating the old beliefs of a relationship of …

Personal Relation Between Byron And Shelley, Margaret Feeney Jan 1939

Personal Relation Between Byron And Shelley, Margaret Feeney

Graduate Thesis Collection

Any facts or details that might be given concerning the personal relation between two poets whose lives ran closely side by side, whose environment was practically the same, although they reacted to that environment entirely differently, and from whose works we have derived pleasure or profit, can not but be interesting.  This conviction induces me to present a consecutive account of the development of the relation between Byron and Shelley, and to correlate the several interests that occupied their thoughts.  I have endeavored to portray them, not just as two poets, but as citizens of the actual world.

Emerson, A Transcendental Propagandist, Hilda T. Darensbourg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nearly every modern language has been utilized to present to the reading public literary productions showing the importance of Ralph Waldo Emerson as a writer. Studies in this respect are to be found in German, French, Spanish, to say nothing of English. Monographs, essays, biographies, and treaties in all of these languages deal with one aspect or another of this man who had unprecedented influence on nineteenth century America

Philosophic Trend Of American Negro Poetry, George Stevens Jan 1939

Philosophic Trend Of American Negro Poetry, George Stevens

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, submitted to Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Master of Arts degree in 1939, traces the philosophic trend in American Negro poetry from 1761 to the contemporary period, examining the shift from an idealistic, religiously grounded poetic sensibility toward a naturalistic worldview. Drawing on primary poetry collections, anthologies, and critical studies of Black American literature, the thesis divides its analysis into three literary-historical periods: the Early Period (1761-1865), the Pre-Renaissance Period (1866-1899), and the Renaissance Period (1900 to the time of writing).

The thesis argues that poetry of the Early Period, beginning with Jupiter Hammon, …

Shakespeare's Use Of The Ghost In His Tragedies, John Carl Burcham Jun 1938

Shakespeare's Use Of The Ghost In His Tragedies, John Carl Burcham

English Language and Literature ETDs

The purpose of this study is to set forth the idea, already conceded generally, that Shakespeare was a supreme dramatic artist; that he became supreme through creative genius that affected all that came under his magic hand; that the purpose of his creative efforts was to produce a poetic, or dramatic, illusion. And the focal point of this paper will be that the ghost in Shakespeare was, in his own mind, as much his own creation as was any other dramatic device he used.

Innovations In The Vocabulary Of Christopher Marlowe. A Dictionary Of New Words, Word Meanings, Forms And Functions, Urvin Rundle

English Language and Literature ETDs

The present study proposes to fill this gap in our knowledge of Marlowe’s attitudes by an objective study of the relationship between elements in his diction and the principal language movements of his time. Since these movements are all characterized by innovations of words, word-meanings, forms, and functions, our study resolves itself into an examination of such innovations in the language of Marlowe.

The Influence Of Cicero On Edmund Burke, Richard Paul Cramer Jun 1938

The Influence Of Cicero On Edmund Burke, Richard Paul Cramer

Bachelors’ Theses

Much has been written concerning the great orators of various ages, especially in regard to their style, ideas, originality, political sympathies and the influence of the orator on the literature of hie age; but, strange as it may seem, nothing has ever been written concerning the relative merits of two of the greatest orators that the world has ever known. The two men that I refer to are Marcus Tullius Cicero and Edmund Burke. Cicero must be recognized by the entire world as being the first and foremost orator in the world, while Burke is acknowledged the foremost orator in …
