The Influence Of The Book Of Common Prayer On The Prose Style Of Samuel Johnson's Prayers, Walter E. Dodds
The Influence Of The Book Of Common Prayer On The Prose Style Of Samuel Johnson's Prayers, Walter E. Dodds
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Somewhere is most general histories and outlines of English literature, the greatness of the King James Bible and its influence on all of English literature since 1611 have been pointed out. Unquestionably, all men of letters in the English language since that time have known of the King James Bible; and many of them may have been decidedly influenced by its tradition of cadenced prose and its prose figures.
The great deal of research would have to be done in order to establish conclusively the influence of the Prayer Book upon all writers from 1549 to the present time. If …
The Importance, Influence, And Continuity Of Bronte Juvenilia In Reference To The Mature Works, Thelma Lucile Cooley
The Importance, Influence, And Continuity Of Bronte Juvenilia In Reference To The Mature Works, Thelma Lucile Cooley
Graduate Thesis Collection
It is the purpose of this thesis to discuss the Bronte juvenilia only in reference to the mature works and to make clear what influences and likenesses there are between the two, and what currents of continuity exist from the childhood writing through the adult accomplisbment. In such an inquiry Charlotte Bronte, of course, provides the richest reward. For only hers and Branwell's juvenile writings remain to us, and of these two only she wrote significantly with a mature purpose. But the search is barren in none of the four: in all--Charlotte and Branwell, Emily and Anne--the investigation becomes the …

Positivism In The Works Of George Eliot, Bernice Jones
Positivism In The Works Of George Eliot, Bernice Jones
Graduate Thesis Collection
This paper attempts to find in the facts of George Eliot's life the evidences of positive philosophy, to trace the philosophy to its logical basis and to show its influence on her work. There are many who say such a study is useless or at best unimportant, but I do not agree. I am not attempting to "piece out" an entire philosophy by combining fragmentary allusions I have found in her work. I am not disappointed to find her thought inconsistent, or mixed, or different at one period from another. There is no philosophical system that must not admit ambiguity …

The North American Indian As Presented In Early Chronicles, Edith Stephens Blessing
The North American Indian As Presented In Early Chronicles, Edith Stephens Blessing
English Language and Literature ETDs
The inhabitants of the newly discovered North American continent were of great interest to contemporary Europeans. What manner of creatures lived in this new land? Were they monsters? Were they men? A few Indians were brought back to Europe by Columbus, by Cartier, and by Smith, but these were seen by a limited number of the populace. The widespread impressions of the natives came, therefore, from the early writings, the chronicles, the reports, and the letters of the explorers and the first settlers. It is from these sources that the picture of the North American Indian was created for the …

A Study Of Gerard Manley Hopkins, Howard E. Sylvester
A Study Of Gerard Manley Hopkins, Howard E. Sylvester
English Language and Literature ETDs
The general aim of this study of Gerard Manley Hopkins is to add to the limited amount of knowledge concerning a poet whose influence within the past twenty years has been considerable. A corollary purpose of this paper, therefore, is to investigate and clarify some of the metrical experiments and practices of Hopkins. Critics, touching upon the verse-technique of Hopkins, have been cautious in their approach to his particular experiments in "sprung" and "counterpointed" rhythm. Various casual writings upon Hopkins have called attention to the poet's peculiarities of syntax, but the nature of these peculiarities has not been carefully or …

Sectionalism And Local Color In The Short Stories Of The Plains States, 1870-1938, Nelle Dooley
Sectionalism And Local Color In The Short Stories Of The Plains States, 1870-1938, Nelle Dooley
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Robert Ramsay in his Short Stories of America has mapped out the United States in twenty- five literary groups . He has left without sectional designation a strip through the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas and has shaded it on his literary map of local color regions as "neutral". This, "a region unexplored or explored but unsuccessfully as yet, “is to be known in this study as the Plains States. The strip will be broadened out to reach the boundaries of these states, thus including small portions of the sections which Professor Ramsay designates as the Corn Belt and …

British Criticism Of American Literature 1844-1860 As Reflected In Littell's Living Age, Lelon Avalon Hill
British Criticism Of American Literature 1844-1860 As Reflected In Littell's Living Age, Lelon Avalon Hill
English Language and Literature ETDs
In reviewing sixty-seven volumes, ranging from six hundred and twenty to eight hundred and twenty-five pages, of Littell's Living Age, which extracts verbatim from British periodicals and newspaper, and in reading various works of American and British authors, literatures, histories of the period involved, and early magazines and periodicals, I have found material pertaining to the subject under discussion that would fill a good sized book. Therefore, having only limited time and space, I shall give the opinions of British periodicals and newspapers that are to be found in Littell's Living Age.
In writing this thesis I shall …
The Influence Of The Oxford Movement On Poetry, Mary Margery Smith
The Influence Of The Oxford Movement On Poetry, Mary Margery Smith
English Language and Literature ETDs
As a source of literature the Oxford Movement, beginning in 1833, occupies a place unique and apart. Over three thousand volumes on this Movement are said to have issued from the press, reviewing the entire history, its outstanding features, its inner spirit, and its lasting effects.
It was a sudden ripening of varied fruit on a vine that seemed barren, for its first phase rose out of the Church of England, at that time seemingly satisfied with its Erastianism; the second phase opened when John Henry Newman seceded to Rome, and then divided into two channels -- the Anglo-Catholic flood …

Noel Coward's Contribution To The Comedy Of Manners., Clara-Marie Doughtry
Noel Coward's Contribution To The Comedy Of Manners., Clara-Marie Doughtry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An estimate of Noel Coward's contribution to the comedy of manners necessitates an understanding of: (1) the nature and the place of the comedy of manners in modern drama, (2) Noel Coward's background, and (3) an analysis of Noel Coward's formula for the comedy of manners. We find in the material relating to modern drama. little discussion of the comedy of manners. Occasionally plays may be mentioned as comedies of manners, but there is no discussion as to the specific nature of the comedy of manners in modern drama. The only book that discusses fully the comedy of manners in …
