Serious Domestic Drama As Tragedy : A Study Of The Protagonist, Charles Turney
Serious Domestic Drama As Tragedy : A Study Of The Protagonist, Charles Turney
Master's Theses
Domestic drama is the most popular genre employed by the modern dramatist. The question may arise as to whether or not tragedy is any longer desired by the playgoer. In these representative plays, taken from many countries and written on a variety of themes all centered around domestic life, as judged by the criteria established in the first chapter, few of these dramas succeed as tragedies. This is not to be interpreted to mean that the so-called "tragic impulse" is dead. Those plays which are classed as tragedy are pure tragedy-- dramas at the peak of intensity demanded by the …

Roger Ascham's Unrecognized Contributions To Education In The Schoolmaster, Harold L. Askew
Theses
In the late sixteenth century, Roger Ascham, English scholar and author, wrote The Schoolmaster, in which he outlined some principles of education and of learning. The purpose of this paper is to note some of these principles and to illustrate their use in education.

The Counting House, A Play In Three Acts, Robert Joseph Helland
The Counting House, A Play In Three Acts, Robert Joseph Helland
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This play concerns a revolution that occurs in a small, independent nation. The nation is called Hebrus, and it is a jungle country. One great industry has made the land prosperous, an industry founded by a brave, hard, and ambitious American. His name was Gemaedan. The wealth that the industry gave him, and the power that was hie as its owner made him a proud man. The people of Hebrus loved him. As he grew older, and wealthier, he returned to America. He died there, leaving to hi son , Max, a symbol of his power: the machete he had …
William Faulkner As Moralist : A Fable, Jean Marie Anderson
William Faulkner As Moralist : A Fable, Jean Marie Anderson
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
In August, 1954, William Faulkner’s twentieth book of fiction, A Fable, was published. As might be expected by anyone knowing of Faulkner’s previous career and critical reception, the reviewers received it with widely divergent opinions. None seems to have found the book an unqualified success, the word “failure” occurs in many of the reviews, and a number confess inability to find motivation for various actions or the pertinence of certain episodes, More than one reviewer reveals quite obviously that he has not been able to follow the plot.
As a matter of fact, the runner is one the few main …
A Historical Survey And Evaluation Of The Most Prominent Theories That Shakespeare Did Not Write The Works Attributed To Him, Lola Vida Johnson
A Historical Survey And Evaluation Of The Most Prominent Theories That Shakespeare Did Not Write The Works Attributed To Him, Lola Vida Johnson
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The question of the authorship of the plays, poems, and sonnets traditionally attributed to the pen if William Shakespeare of Stratford-on-Avon has now been before the public for over one hundred years. Many of the most noted poets, playwrights, and nobles of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries have been assigned the authorship of these works. The controversy can be compared to the controversy over Homer’s authorship. In 1975, Friederick Augustus Wolf proposed that Homer did not write The Iliad and The Odyssey. By 1900, Wolf had been disproven, but the question was one of great importance when it was first …

Our Nature Still: Three Original One-Act Satirical Dramas, Valdon Laverne Johnson
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
To almost every student of literature, there inevitably comes a desire to create literature which is of his own making. The three plays which comprise this thesis represent this writer's attempt to accomplish two ends: first, to make literature of his own, and second, to work with the techniques of playwriting.
The Intellectual Identity Of James Branch Cabell, Tom Towers
The Intellectual Identity Of James Branch Cabell, Tom Towers
English Language and Literature ETDs
The literary career of James Branch Cabell is as strange as any in the entire history of American letters; certainly it is unparalleled in the twentieth century. The nation's most famous critics, within a single decade, lionized and anathematized Cabell to extents seldom matched in the criticism of this century. For a time, every American with any intellectual ambitions read eagerly each new Cabell novel; and then, almost at the moment of Cabell's greatest popularity, the very critics who had made him an international literary figure suddenly saw in him a villain responsible for the appalling emptiness of American literature, …

Religion And Tradition In The Novels Of George Eliot, Viva Fisk
Religion And Tradition In The Novels Of George Eliot, Viva Fisk
English Language and Literature ETDs
Readers and critics of the past have overemphasized George Eliot's loss of belief in the literal truth of Christianity to the extent that they have read her novels as rationalistic attacks on religion. She never denied religious values: her religion broadened to include such concepts as the value of tradition, of values inherited from the past, and of love and understanding as social forces. I turn to the novels to show these attitudes and ideas of George Eliot about religion and tradition precisely because so many commentators have neglected the novels and written only about women.
Brand Whitlock: His Life And His Fiction, Juanita Smith Kytle
Brand Whitlock: His Life And His Fiction, Juanita Smith Kytle
English Language and Literature ETDs
Brand Whitlock lived a varied and active life during an extremely complex period of our history. The threads have not, by any means, been disentangled, but there are some generalizations which may be made. Even though they offer the difficulties that all generalizations do, the following tentative conclusions may be of some help in fitting the man into his time; they may be used, perhaps, as a framework on which to hang the complexities.
Early And Modern Criticism Of Browning's Pauline, Paracelsus, And Sordello, Leota Jean Lapaz
Early And Modern Criticism Of Browning's Pauline, Paracelsus, And Sordello, Leota Jean Lapaz
English Language and Literature ETDs
A study of certain of the critical comments -- both favorable and unfavorable -- that have been published on Pauline, Paracelsus, and Sordello should add materially to a better understanding not only of the poems themselves, but also of their relation to the totality of Browning's work. Such a study is the subject of this thesis, which may be regarded as having a three-fold purpose: (1) To focus attention upon the three poems with which Browning began his career; (2) to establish and comment upon early and modern critical opinions of the poems; and (3) to determine whether …
The Art And Mind Of O. E. Rølvaag, Paul M. Reigstad
The Art And Mind Of O. E. Rølvaag, Paul M. Reigstad
English Language and Literature ETDs
This study is primarily a discussion of the novels of the Norwegian-American writer, O. E. Rølvaag. Though one cannot read his books without recognizing their importance as historical documents and social criticism, my main objective has been to consider his merit as a literary artist rather than to evaluate his cultural program. I have quoted frequently from his letters, many of which here appear for the first time, in order to reveal the development of ideas that recur as dominant themes in the novels.
Myth In Marlowe's Dramas, Agnes Therese Hinkley
Myth In Marlowe's Dramas, Agnes Therese Hinkley
English Language and Literature ETDs
To be intelligible to his age, a playwright must mirror and reflect the feelings and thoughts of the age, and Marlowe is no exception. How did Marlowe help shape Elizabethan myth through his imaginative use of myth in his dramas? How did he use Renaissance myths as the bases for his tragic conflicts? Two points of view are considered in this examination of myth in Marlowe's dramas: (1) the nature or the myth; (2) the structural importance of the myth
