Graphic Nonsense And Historical Trauma In Fred Chao’S Johnny Hiro, Jin Lee
Graphic Nonsense And Historical Trauma In Fred Chao’S Johnny Hiro, Jin Lee
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This article introduces the concept of “graphic nonsense” to explain nonsense in Fred Chao’s graphic narrative, Johnny Hiro, which features figures of monster (Godzilla and King Kong) as well as real U.S. political figures (Michael Bloomberg and John P. O’Brien). Focusing on transpacific trauma, this article articulates a counter-history using Fredric Jameson’s terms to expose the process of silencing the other and “retextualizing” history. Although puzzling at first, if not silly at best, the nonsensical elements in the graphic narrative can prompt the reader to find out historical allusions in Godzilla and King Kong to make sense out of …

The Orientation Of Professionally Teaching Of Foreign Languages In Pedagogical Higher Education Institutions, Gulchexra Xudoyberdiyeva
The Orientation Of Professionally Teaching Of Foreign Languages In Pedagogical Higher Education Institutions, Gulchexra Xudoyberdiyeva
Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal
This article is about the effectiveness of using descriptive methods in English classes and professional-oriented teaching foreign language at a non-language university. It analyses the peculiarities of descriptive method, comparative-historical method and the role of linguodidactics in teaching foreign language at a non-linguistic university. The introduction of the concept of competence in the educational process eliminates the gap between the theoretical knowledge that has hitherto been used in teaching practice and its practical application, that is, when the student has theoretical knowledge, it is difficult to use it in problematic situations. So, Great attention is paid to the teaching of …
Linguacultural Pecularities Of Incantations Of The Uzbek Language, Gulrukh Norbekova
Linguacultural Pecularities Of Incantations Of The Uzbek Language, Gulrukh Norbekova
Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal
The words of the incantations are considered as the object of both linguistic and cultural research, as either of them complete each other while doing the following investigation. Regarding to this point, phonetic, morphological, lexical features of the words of incantations have been described and analyzed in this article. The use of the comparative historical method, the methods of structural- morphological, contextual and historical-etymological analyses contribute to the achievement of the objective of the research. It has been revealed that at the phonetic and grammatical levels, the features inherent in the ancient Turkic literary tradition are preserved. Thematic groups of …
Lexical Interference As The Interaction Of Language Systems In A Bilingual Environment, Muborak Turayeva
Lexical Interference As The Interaction Of Language Systems In A Bilingual Environment, Muborak Turayeva
Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal
The work considers the development of the theory of language contacts, in particular, provisions concerning interference as a cause of linguistic variation. The results obtained deepen the existing ideas about the peculiarities of the implementation of linguistic units of English origin and the conditions for their use in the Uzbek language, as well as create prerequisites for further study of the problems of the relationship of languages. In this work, we adhere to the position taken by U. Weinreich, understanding by interference any change in the language system under the influence of another language and, therefore, including lexical borrowings here. …

Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal
This article is devoted to the study of the most pressing problems of teaching foreign languages, particularly grammar at the present stage, as well as the main problems associated with this. In this paper, we will review only a few of the problems of teaching grammar of English, which are central to the problems related to various aspects of modern teaching. In modern conditions, knowledge of foreign languages is becoming increasingly important, since we cannot, in the context of globalization, exist in isolation from the rest of the world. The article reveals the features and problems of teaching grammar, such …
Teaching Multicultural Literature In The College Classroom, Jordan K. Fleming
Teaching Multicultural Literature In The College Classroom, Jordan K. Fleming
Selected Honors Theses
Due to a lack of research on the topic and events of 2020, this thesis aims to learn how professors teach multicultural literature to traditional undergraduate students and how students respond to these courses. I focus on pedagogical scholarship that notes the structure, challenges, and impact of teaching this genre in K-12 and higher education classrooms. My conclusions provide educators with a repertoire of teaching strategies, materials, and student feedback to help students critically respond to living in a multicultural nation and world. These conclusions also lessen a gap in research, as there is significantly less published information on teaching …

Introduction: Literary Geographies: The Solway Firth, Gerard Lee Mckeever
Studies in Scottish Literature
Introduces the symposium that follows by describing the Solway Firth, its shores and its significance in the late 18th and early 19th century, defining the perspective of the symposium as "critical regionalism," examining the theme through an 1821 magazine story-series about a steam-boat on the Solway and through Allan Cunningham's novel Lord Roldan (1836), and reviewing the other symposium papers to highlight their contributions to this theme.
Stages Of Legal Discourse Development In Linguistics, Nuriya Jumaniyozova
Stages Of Legal Discourse Development In Linguistics, Nuriya Jumaniyozova
Philology Matters
Although the term ‘discourse’ has been defined by many researchers in linguistics, it still remains an abstract concept. This is because there are different views on discourse and text, discourse and language, and discourse and speech oppositions, and the study of this problem in linguistics is of a particular importance. Besides linguistics, ‘discourse’ is also studied in sociology, anthropology, philosophy, and other fields as the primary research object of social theories. And this requires an interdisciplinary study of this issue. Today discourse is considered in the framework of Forensic linguistics, which connects jurisprudence and linguistics, and the disclosure of the …
This Ain't Yo' Mama's Composition Class: Addressing Anti-Blackness By Implementing Anti-Racist Pedagogy, Sharanna B. Brown
This Ain't Yo' Mama's Composition Class: Addressing Anti-Blackness By Implementing Anti-Racist Pedagogy, Sharanna B. Brown
Northwest Journal of Teacher Education
Kyoko Kishimoto writes that those who practice anti-racist pedagogical practices are not only required to teach about race, but instead "teach about race and racism in a way that fosters critical analytical skills, which reveal the power relations behind racism and how race has been institutionalized in U.S. society to create and justify inequalities" (541). This is the work. And I have chosen to do it.
Steeped in anti-racist pedagogy “This Ain’t Yo’ Mama’s Composition Course” aims to explore the ways that writing classrooms can affirm students’ autonomy while simultaneously equipping them with skills that equate to “cultural capital.” Anti-racist …
Cripping The Welfare Queen: The Radical Potential Of Disability Politics, Jina B. Kim
Cripping The Welfare Queen: The Radical Potential Of Disability Politics, Jina B. Kim
English Language and Literature: Faculty Publications
Drawing together feminist- and queer-of-color critique with disability theory, this essay offers a literary-cultural reframing of the welfare queen in light of critical discourses of disability. It does so by taking up the discourse of dependency that casts racialized, low-income, and disabled populations as drains on the state, reframing this discourse as a potential site of coalition among antiracist, anticapitalist, and feminist disability politics. Whereas antiwelfare policy cast independence as a national ideal, this analysis of the welfare mother elaborates a version of disability and women-of-color feminism that not only takes dependency as a given but also mines the figure …
Place, Space, And Thirdspace In Selected Poems By Jawdat Haydar, Emile Whaibeh, Elie Matta
Place, Space, And Thirdspace In Selected Poems By Jawdat Haydar, Emile Whaibeh, Elie Matta
BAU Journal - Society, Culture and Human Behavior
The spatial turn of the 20th century reshaped the examination of space in literary research, with works by De Certeau and Soja being some of the most prominent in that area. Numerous pieces of writing were revisited following the spatial turn, and Mahjar poetry was part of that reexamination. Indeed, Mahjar poetry is rife with spatial imagery, and Jawdat Haydar’s poems, four of which are the subject of this paper's analysis, are no exception. This paper argues that the representations of Lebanon and Baalbeck in Haydar’s poetry are self-conscious reconstructions created thanks to the speaker’s emotions, thoughts, and descriptions. …

Modernist Amateur Economists: Heterodox Economic Theory And British Literary Modernism, Samuel Smith
Modernist Amateur Economists: Heterodox Economic Theory And British Literary Modernism, Samuel Smith
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
In Modernist Amateur Economists: Heterodox Economic Theory and British Literary Modernism, I argue that a range of British writers of literary modernism responded to a moment of institutional and economic instability by engaging with heterodox economic theories in their literary works. Paying close attention to the institutional history of the academic disciplines of Literary Studies and Economics and to the state of heterodox economic theorization in the first half of the twentieth century, I assemble a group of writers I term “Modernist Amateur Economists,” who rejected the tendency of professional economists to abstract economic questions from broader cultural contexts. In …
Modern Concepts Of The Study Of Phraseological Units Within The Framework Of Frame Representation And The Theory Of Conceptual Metaphor, Navruza Aliyeva
Modern Concepts Of The Study Of Phraseological Units Within The Framework Of Frame Representation And The Theory Of Conceptual Metaphor, Navruza Aliyeva
Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal
The current article is devoted to the particular theoretical views of the notion of frame as well as it focuses on the and the theory of conceptual metaphor. Moreover, it deals with the specialized frame, slot and terminal characteristics which might be involved in most common used phraseological units, particularly, on the examples of English, Russian and Uzbek sentences and collocations. As it’s obviously seen that phraseological units contain deep sense, which have roots in the culture of nation. They reflect people’s way of thinking and perception of the world. They are considered to be “codes” of culture, its specific …
Take This Work Global, Ian Cornelius
Take This Work Global, Ian Cornelius
English: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Paul Eggert’s The Work and the Reader in Literary Studies: Scholarly Editing and Book History elaborates a general program for the study of literature centered on the question, “What is the thing read?” Concepts of document, text, and work are parsed with care, generating many valuable insights and clarifications, but there is need for more thinking about the linguistic medium of literature. To textual studies, bibliography, and book history — the trio of foundational disciplines advocated by Eggert — one should add philology, or the study of literary language.

Ontological (Free) Agency: The Erasure, Commodification, And Autonomy Of Black Athletes, Abraham Yabar Salinas
English Theses - Archive
The National Football League wields a powerful influence on American society and holds an authoritative sway over various sociopolitical discourses, each influencing the degrees of interaction between people of different origins, cultural backgrounds and identities. The purpose of this research is to examine how the NFL is product of a network of racial discrimination directed at Black people within the league. This research examines how the National Football League functions as a white-dominated structure of power in order to manipulate, exploit, and erase Black bodies for the benefit of multi-billion-dollar profits. This study focuses on how Black players are subject …
Mic Check : Finding Hip Hop's Place In The Literary Milieu, Victorio Reyes
Mic Check : Finding Hip Hop's Place In The Literary Milieu, Victorio Reyes
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The study of Hip Hop poetics has been slowly gaining momentum as an area for scholarly inquiry. Accordingly, Mic Check rests on one critical assumption: Hip Hop is the most significant American form of poetry ever invented. To back up this claim, this project investigates Hip Hop lyricism from five critical angles: tradition, form, tone, medium, and practice. I argue that music’s foundational position in African American literature clarifies Hip Hop’s experiments with language, which operate within and extend an ongoing, centuries-old tradition of linguistic, rhythmic, and poetic experimentation. Comprehension of the longstanding literary/oral territory from which Hip Hop is …

“Precios Perle Wythouten Spotte”: Accepting The Unknowable In Pearl, Jana Ishee
Master's Theses
The fourteenth-century Middle English poem Pearl, authored by the anonymous Pearl-poet, survives in a manuscript known as London, British Library, Cotton MS Nero A.x. This dream vision, narrated by a grieving father, tells the story of his journey to Paradise, where he encounters his infant daughter, now older, regal, and wise, proffering admonishments with the authority of God to her tearful father. meeting with her in Paradise. Drawing on Caroline Walker Bynum’s work on medieval European conceptions of death and resurrection, J. Stephen Russell’s work on the dream vision genre, and Karl Steel’s work on oysters as liminal figures, …

Spoilers & Sequels; Bifurcated Fandoms In The Age Of Adaptation, Joseph Young, Paul Tankard, Lana Whited
Mythcon
Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movies launched a new era of adaptations of fantasy. The resulting adaptations—of the works of J.K. Rowling, Philip Pullman, George R.R. Martin, the Marvel superhero tradition and much else besides—now have fan bases often wholly separate 23 from those of their literary source texts. Rather than dwelling on what any given example gets ‘wrong’ or ‘right,’ this panel discussion will consider this bifurcation of the audience of a popular literary genre. If, as Tom Shippey suggests, fantasy deserves to be taken seriously because of its popularity, what are the ramifications of atomising the popular …

Applying Brown And Levinson's Politeness Theory On Lady Macbeth's Speech In Shakespeare’S Macbeth, Mahmood Eshreteh, Yasmin Draweesh
Jerash for Research and Studies Journal مجلة جرش للبحوث والدراسات
This paper is an attempt to apply Brown and Levinson's (1987) politeness theory on Lady Macbeth's speech in Shakespeare's Macbeth. By analyzing her dialogues in the play, the researchers try to find the politeness strategies in these dialogues, and the reasons behind preferring the use one strategy over another. After classifying the analyzed selected parts of the play and arranging them according to Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness strategies, the researchers found that power, status and distance play the biggest role in preferring one strategy over the others. Moreover, the findings revealed that Lady Macbeth's ideology leads her to …

Food And The Irish Short Story Imagination, Anke Klitzing
Articles
Short fiction is a format heartily embraced by the Irish literary imagination since the nineteenth century. This paper takes a gastrocritical approach to investigate the role of food in selected stories from the recently published anthology The Art of the Glimpse (2020). It shows that through the years, food and foodways have been valuable tools for Irish writers, providing setting and context, themes and symbols, plot points, conflicts, characterisation, as well as the quintessential epiphanies.

Female Characters In The Novel “Death Of A Hero” By Richard Aldington, Shakhnoza Chorieva
Philology Matters
The literary process in the first half of the twentieth century acquires new styles, new techniques, it combines modernism and realism. For literary works, fantastic absurdity becomes characteristic, as a new experimental form. If in the nineteenth century, literary works described clear objective subjects, for example, love, evil, family and social relations, then in the updated literature of the twentieth century, abstract psychological methods are used primarily to describe a particular thing. The First World War became the cardinal theme of the art in the first half of the twentieth century, determined the personal destinies and formed the artistic personality …
