"The development of underground gasification methods for recovering mineral fuels is comparatively recent and several methods have been evolved for treating the various source materials. The problem of recovering solid and liquid fuels by underground gasification in gaseous form was primarily approached by means of opening underground entries which created the required fire-drift for starting the gasification in place.

Increasing knowledge of the whole problem of gasification in situ led to the evolution of new improvements in the underground gasification technique and, in the course of progressive research the preparations required for starting the gasification were accomplished from the surface. …

"The construction of the apparatus for production of powder patterns at a definite temperature and the technique for evaluation of x-ray powder patterns by the asymmetric method are described in detail, and the mode of error elimination is discussed.

A new scanning device is designed for use in x-ray diffraction work.

A modified method is described for the determination of densities of solids, which eliminates some of the difficulties interfering with other similar methods thus far proposed. Formulae are derived for the calculation of density as well as for reduction of density at a desired temperature.

"The purpose of this study was the evaluation of military and commercial explosives. A standardized index of effectiveness was used as the basis of comparison.

Testing was conducted at the Experimental Mine of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy at Rolla, Missouri, and at Graniteville, Missouri. At the school mine, 16 drift rounds, 8 slab rounds and 70 quarry tests were made in the dolomitic limestone. This rock, known locally as the Quarry Ledge of the Jefferson City formation, is of Ordovician Age"--Abstract, page ii.

Every creek gulley and raw interrupted by roadway fills and embankments must be provided with an adequate drainage conduit under the pavement. If the natural drainage is impeded or the conduit is not functioning properly, impounded water over-runs the pavement, seeps through the fill, and eventually disintegrates the section or reduces its stability. The topography in Kentucky, through varied sectionally, requires on the average, one cross-drain for every thousand feet of roadway. Studies of riding qualities as determined by irregularities in high type bituminous pavements were first treated in Report No. 1 on this subject in December, 1949. At that time interest was centered as much on specifications as on the causes, the thought being that specifications did not provide satisfactory tolerances to produce surfaces with good riding qualities. Specifically, tolerances over relatively short distances longitudinally were though to be at fault.

All tractors tested at the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory were certified by their manufacturers as being stock model machines, conforming to specifications filed with the application for test. No special or high-test fuels were used except as recommended by the manufacturer as necessary. All results within the official tractor test report were actually attained in tests and are without correction or allowances for friction, temperature, altitude, etc. The results were initially accomplished with the tractor in charge of skilled operators employed by the University. Locations for the Test Sections within the Control Sections and as close as possible to the Loadometer Stations established by the Division of Planning have been selected and are described in this report. With but one or two exceptions, there is reasonable certainty that these sections of pavement can be kept in service without major changes for a period of five years. However, there are repairs that should be made on the pavements in two of the sections in order to prevent rapid deterioration that is likely to occur if these are not corrected at the beginning of the study.

The Czarina mine operated for a short time during the last Great War, lies in the southwestern corner of the Butte mining district of Montana. This area was worked during the extensive silver mining in Butte during the 1890's, and was prospected from time to time in later years. The orebody of the mine consists of fissure fillings of manganese mineral oxidized to a certain depth, in a fracture zone of the Boulder Batholith.
