The problem was the investigation of electrowinning of zinc by using a mercury cathode, employing a neutral solution of zinc sulphate and containing small amounts of zinc, in the order of ten grams zinc per liter and less. The purpose of this study was on the base of the laboratory experiments to investigate the operational data that might possibly be applied in practice or industry.

Current commercial use of the mercury cathode cell is limited to two types of electrolytic sodium cells-­the Castner cell and the Sorenson cell. Mercury as a cathode medium has also found application in polarographic analysis, a method of a simultaneous quantitative and qualitative analysis of several metal components of solution.

It was considered by the writer that characteristics of oscilloscope wave forms representing the varying pressures taking place in the CFR engine cylinder might provide an index to octane ratings of gasoline. Obtaining pressure wave forms on the oscilloscope required some medium for providing an electrical signal in response to engine cylinder pressures. A quartz pressure element was considered as the item that could fulfill this requirement.

Many fine-grained igneous rocks, basaltic and felsitic in character, are difficult to classify. In numer­ous cases, it is impossible to classify these types of rocks by quick methods of identification. It was hoped at the beginning of this study that refractive indices of glasses formed by quick artificial fusion of samples from selected suites of igneous rocks would show a close cor­relation in chemical composition.

In general, the procedures. and ranges of performance characteristics conform with things that have been discussed by the A.S.T.M. Subcommittee on Traffic Paints. Actually, A.S.T.M. has not adopted a specification, but probably they will have one within the next year or two.

This series of inspections started April 28, with inspection of pavements containing gravel located in Daviess County. It was found that most pavements containing this aggregate has been resurfaced last year using a crushed limestone aggregate. There were, however, three hot-mix and one road-mix pavements remaining.

The coordinate method for measuring pipe flow finds some application in industry where estimates must be made of the flow of fluids containing relatively large amounts of suspended solids that would render other measuring devices ineffective.
