Individual Sow Feeders, P Mcnamara Jan 1966

Individual Sow Feeders, P Mcnamara

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

FOOD is the major cost in any pig enterprise and it is particularly easy for waste to occur in the breeding herd.

Individual feeders enable the pigman to feed each sow according to her need, and enable the sows to eat their feed slowly or quickly as they choose.

Termites Or White Ants, Clee Francis Howard Jenkins Jan 1966

Termites Or White Ants, Clee Francis Howard Jenkins

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

TERMITES are commonly but erroneously called "white ants."

Actually they are more nearly related to cockroaches than to ants, but their general appearance and subterranean habits have given strong support to the popular designation.

They may be divided into two major groups from an economic point of view, viz., wood-dwelling and earth-dwelling termites.

Synthesis And Structural Determination Of Intermetallic Compounds In The Fe-Ho System, Gerald J. Roe Jan 1966

Synthesis And Structural Determination Of Intermetallic Compounds In The Fe-Ho System, Gerald J. Roe

Masters Theses

"The intermediate phases in the holmium-iron system were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction and metallographic examination. The intermediate phases identified by X-ray diffraction data were HoFe₂ , HoFe₃ , HoFe₅, and Ho₂Fe₁₇.

A new intermediate phase, HoFe₃, was found. HoFe₃ was indexed as hexagonal with lattice parameters of a = 5.084 Å and c = 24.45 Å, and was thought to be of the space group R3̄̄m.

HoFe₂ was formed by a peritectic reaction and its solidus was estimated to be between 1325°C and 1340°C. suggested to be a congruent melting intermetallic compound with a melting point below 1340°C. …

Composite Pavement Design, James H. Havens Jan 1966

Composite Pavement Design, James H. Havens

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

There is an aura of superiority attached to the work "composite"--that is to say, the composite of anything is expected to be superior to its distinct elements of parts. It will suffice here to define a composite pavement as being compounded of "rigid" and "flexible" parts or layers. In reality, we mean layers of portland cement concrete and bituminous concrete--each of which is admirably sufficient in itself or may be so down-graded to satisfy lesser desires. Even so, we seem always to be discontent with the status quo. We are all somewhat opinionated on matters of pavement design and …

Determining The Best Computational Method For Simulation, Neil Hertenstein Jan 1966

Determining The Best Computational Method For Simulation, Neil Hertenstein

Masters Theses

"Two related problems are treated in the discussion. First, what is the best computational means to be used to simulate a given system? Second, if hybrid is chosen, how do we assign the problem to the different computers to realize the fullest advantage of the hybrid simulation? Most of the available information in the literature is presented in light of the above questions. It is found that, despite the lack of a precise theoretical solution, much insight can be gained into the problem. A proposed procedure for hybrid assignment and a sample problem using this procedure completes the discussion"--Abstract, page …

The Effect Of Epoxy Resin In Stone And Slag Concrete, James Chun-Min Chou Jan 1966

The Effect Of Epoxy Resin In Stone And Slag Concrete, James Chun-Min Chou

Masters Theses

"In concrete construction, the weight of the structure represents a large portion of the total load carried; thus, there is considerable advantage in reducing the weight of the concrete. To obtain this result, there are at least three approaches (1). The first method of producing lightweight concrete is by means of substituting a porous lightweight aggregate of low specific gravity for the ordinary aggregate. The second method relies on introducing large voids within the concrete or mortar mass; this is known as aerated, cellular or gas concrete. The third method is simply to omit the fine aggregate from the mix …

Subcritical Flow Over Various Weir Shapes, M. Leon Hyatt, Gaylord V. Skogerboe, Lloyd H. Austin Jan 1966

Subcritical Flow Over Various Weir Shapes, M. Leon Hyatt, Gaylord V. Skogerboe, Lloyd H. Austin

Reports

Submerged flow exists for any given structure when a change in flow depth downstream from the structure causes a change in flow depth upstream from the structure for any given constant value of discharge. The two flow depths, normally measured when submerged flow exists, consist of a depth upstream from the structure, which is used also for free flow conditions, and a depth of flow located any place downstream from the structure. The initial studies in which the submerged flow analysis was developed were made on flat-bottomed flumes (Hyatt, 1965; and Skogerboe, Walker, and Robinson, 1965). Later studies verified the …

Evaluation Of Free And Submerged Flow Data For Large Parshall Flumes, M. Leon Hyatt, Gaylord V. Skogerboe Jan 1966

Evaluation Of Free And Submerged Flow Data For Large Parshall Flumes, M. Leon Hyatt, Gaylord V. Skogerboe

Reports

Because the accurate measurement of water plays such an important part in water management, such structures as weirs, orifices, calibrated gates f and flumes have been developed. These structures provide the means for reasonable measurement of the smaller flows (1: .. 100 cfs), but for the large flows (100-3,000 cfs) the current meter, large Parshall flume, and various other flumes are commonly used. Where a permanent structure is required, the most widely accepted and utilized method for measurement of large flows is probably the Parshall flume. The purpose of this report has been to collect the existing flow data for …

Mathematical Hydraulics Of Surface Irrigation, Cheng-Lung Chen Jan 1966

Mathematical Hydraulics Of Surface Irrigation, Cheng-Lung Chen

Reports

The general hydrodynamic equations for a spatially varied unsteady flow in a prismatic open channel having an arbitrary cross-sectional shape can be derived from the equations of continuity and momentum. The assumptions based on the general concept of hydrodynamics and the theory of shallow water is introduced. The mathematical models in the surface irrigation can be formulated by these equations of motion with the appropriate initial and boundary conditions prescribed at the singularity point (the origin in the x, t-plane) and at x = 0. Therefore, the flow in the surface irrigation must be described by solving the boundary-value problem …

Measuring Water With Parshall Flumes, Gaylord V. Skogerboe, M. Leon Hyatt, Joe D. England, J. Raymond Johnson Jan 1966

Measuring Water With Parshall Flumes, Gaylord V. Skogerboe, M. Leon Hyatt, Joe D. England, J. Raymond Johnson

Reports

Preface: As the value of water increases, the extent to which measurement is employed in an irrigation system also increases. Additional flow measurements provide information for improved management of the water supply. Good water management requires accurate measurement. Many devices have been developed for this purpose and are in use. Included among them are weirs, orifices, calibrated gates, Parshall flumes, and current meters. Of these, the Parshall flume is one of the most widely accepted and used. Presented in this publication is a discussion concerning the use of Parshall flumes for measuring water, including the utilization of a new approach …

Anodic Dissolution Of Lead In Aqueous Solutions, Christopher Kuo-Chieh Wu Jan 1966

Anodic Dissolution Of Lead In Aqueous Solutions, Christopher Kuo-Chieh Wu

Masters Theses

"The apparent valence of lead was determined in one normal solutions of potassium nitrate, ammonium acetate, lead nitrate, and lead acetate at temperatures of 25 and 50°C. The current density was varied from 0.001 to 1.00 amp•cm -2. The apparent valence of lead ranged between 1.90 and 2.00 in all solutions. The lower valences were reached at higher current densities. The amount of disintegration was very small, and was dependent upon film formation on the surface of the anode.

Potential-current density relationships for the anodic dissolution of lead were obtained in the electrolytes mentioned above. In potassium nitrate and …

A Numerical Method For The Solution Of Cylindrical Shell Structures, Chen-Jow Hsiao Jan 1966

A Numerical Method For The Solution Of Cylindrical Shell Structures, Chen-Jow Hsiao

Masters Theses

"Many studies and analyses of shell structures to date have been either so complex and laborious as to preclude their application in practical design problems or so approximate, because of basic assumptions, as to limit their scope of application. Hence, a method of shell analysis which is convenient to use, reasonable in its results and general in its application is really needed. It is the purpose of this study to supply such a method of analysis.

In this investigation it is proposed to replace the shell structure which has an infinite number of degrees of indeterminancy with an analogous framework …

A Numerical Solution For Beam-Columns On Non-Linear Foundations, Wendelin H. Mueller Iii Jan 1966

A Numerical Solution For Beam-Columns On Non-Linear Foundations, Wendelin H. Mueller Iii

Masters Theses

"A program for Matlock's recursive method, a numerical method which will analyze beams and columns with linearly varying spring supports, was modified to enable the solution of such members supported by non-linear springs. This modification was accomplished by an iterative technique. The final result of this paper is a computer program which can be used to solve beams or columns with non-linear spring supports, giving as output the deflection, slope, moment, shear, net load and curvature of the structure at uniformly spaced locations"--Abstract, page ii.

Approximate Solution Of The Momentum And Energy Equations For Partially Ionized Argon, Sir-Hoi Chen Jan 1966

Approximate Solution Of The Momentum And Energy Equations For Partially Ionized Argon, Sir-Hoi Chen

Masters Theses

"Based on available experimental data, the transport properties of partially ionized argon gas have been determined by solving the integral equations of momentum and energy conservation by an approximate method. The momentum and the energy conservation integral equations are solved simultaneously by an iteration method by assuming both parabolic and cubic velocity and temperature profiles separately. The results are compared with the case of linear velocity and temperature profiles"--Abstract, page iii.

The Kinetics Of The Reaction Of M-Nitrobenzyl Bromide With Hydroxide Ion In Aqueous-Aprotic Solvent Mixtures, Ramesh Nagindas Sheth Jan 1966

The Kinetics Of The Reaction Of M-Nitrobenzyl Bromide With Hydroxide Ion In Aqueous-Aprotic Solvent Mixtures, Ramesh Nagindas Sheth

Masters Theses

"The reaction between m-nitrobenzyl bromide and sodium hydroxide in homogeneous aqueous dioxane and aqueous tetrahydrofuran media was studied.

The product of the reaction was identified by infrared, gas chromatography and chemical tests as m-nitrobenzyl alcohol.
The kinetics of the reaction are second order with practically no variation in the rate constants as the % of the organic solvent was changed in the medium. This seems to imply hydrolysis of the organic halide by a process involving both bond-breaking and bond-formation in the transition state.
The activation energy, measured in 50% aqueous dioxane, between 20⁰ and 69.5⁰C at 5 different temperatures, …
