Analysis Of Traffic Loads On Bridges: Report Ii Characteristics Of Traffic On Ohio River Bridges - 1968, Robert L. Lynch

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The recent bridge disaster at Point Pleasant, West Virginia, has renewed concern about the mechanism of material fatigue as a possible cause of catastrophic failure of bridge structures. A reasonable methodology for evaluating the fatigue condition of the highway bridge requires a knowledge of the distribution of traffic loads utilizing the facility during the analysis period. The accuracy of such an analysis is dependent on the accuracies of the input data -- material fatigue properties and traffic characteristics. The more critical of the above parameters, with respect to accuracy, appears to be traffic characteristics. This is especially true of vehicle …

Three-Bolt In-Line Connections With Low Ductility Light-Gage Steel, D. W. Popowich, S. J. Errera, George Winter

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

INTRODUCTION In order to investigate the influence of ductility on the strength and behavior of bolted connections, Dhallal (1) conducted tests on single bolt lap joints using "low ductility" steels. As part of a separate investigation, Popowich (2) conducted tests on single, double, and triple bolt in-line lap joints using "high ductility" steels. The investigation reported herein was performed in order to compare the performance of 3 bolt in-line connections of high ductility steels (21 to 53% elongation in a 2 inch gage length) with that of similar 3 bolt in-line connections of low ductility steels (nominally 5 and 10% …

Rheological And Ultimate Strength Properties Of Cohesive Soils, Gordon D. Scott Feb 1969

Rheological And Ultimate Strength Properties Of Cohesive Soils, Gordon D. Scott

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

In recent years, there have been considerable advances made in rheological theory and its application to various materials. There has not been, however, nearly as much work done toward applying rheology to soil mechanics as the successes of others would seem to indicate. For instance, it has been shown that a variety of stress and deflection problems considering the application of a load by means of an elastic plate to an elastic foundation can be extended to include rate effects through the application of linear viscoelastic theory. Before this theory can be applied to foundation design, however, two questions must …

Settlement Of Highway Bridge Approaches And Embankment Foundations, Tommy C. Hopkins Feb 1969

Settlement Of Highway Bridge Approaches And Embankment Foundations, Tommy C. Hopkins

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The nature and causes of the differential settlement between a bridge deck and the adjoining highway pavement have been studied by only a few investigators. Highway engineers often attribute this fault in the riding surface to the settlement of the embankment because of the improper placement and compaction of material in the approach embankment. Although there exists suggestive evidence that this condition produces the bridge approach fault, no conclusive evidence has been presented which shows this to be the primary source of settlement. Jones (1), Bishop (2) and Deen (3) suggest that differential settlement between the bridge deck and approach …

Computer Specification Of Centrifugal Pump And Motor, Paul David O'Lenick Jan 1969

Computer Specification Of Centrifugal Pump And Motor, Paul David O'Lenick

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to develop a PORTRAIT computer program for selecting a centrifugal pump and motor driver. This is accomplished by means of generalized data which establishes the speed of the Dump and its power requirement. After selection of the pump, the motor is sized and specified. In addition to determining the pump and motor, the program also sizes the discharge and suction lines and the required control valve. The resulting solution yields the pump design data, motor, line and control valve sizes. From this data utility and relative equipment costs can be estimated.

A Simple Observational Technique For The Investigation Of Boundary Layer Stability And Turbulence, Tony Maxworthy Jan 1969

A Simple Observational Technique For The Investigation Of Boundary Layer Stability And Turbulence, Tony Maxworthy

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

A dense suspension of aluminum flakes in a fluid has many advantages as a flow-visualization method, and has been used to study circular Couette flow and Benard instability, among others. In the present contribution the scientific and pedagogical merits of the technique are examined further for three different cases: (a) Stability of Poiseuille flow; (b) Stability of the side-wall boundary layers created when a fluid-filLed, rotating container is suddenly brought to rest; (b) Stability of the boundary layer beneath a concentrated vortex.

The technique is also useful in other cases, especially when fundamentals of fluid flow are to be demonstrated …

Measurements Of Density Fluctuations In Submerged Water Jets, L. N. Wilson, D. W. Prosser Jan 1969

Measurements Of Density Fluctuations In Submerged Water Jets, L. N. Wilson, D. W. Prosser

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

A remote sensing technique, free from many of the problems associated with Inserting probes into a liquid flow, has been developed to measure turbulent density fluctuations In a low speed, submerged water jet. The technique employs two schlieren optical systems, composed of He-Ne lasers and photo detectors. The optical beams intersect in the flow in a plane perpendicular to the flow direction. Knife edges are aligned such that the systems are sensitive to gradients of refractive index in the flow direction. An analysis is presented which relates the cross-covariance of the two signals to the local two-point refractive-index covariance and …

Effect Of Dilute Polymer Solutions On External Boundary Layers, Brian Latto, J. A. Middleton Jan 1969

Effect Of Dilute Polymer Solutions On External Boundary Layers, Brian Latto, J. A. Middleton

Symposia on Turbulence in Liquids

The paper reports an experimental study of the flow of homogeneous aqueous polyacrylamide MRL 402 solution over a thin flat plate. Extensive velocity profile data were obtained, using both cylindrical and conical hot-file probes, and used to obtain local skin friction profiles. Direct drag measurements were made over a period of time for concentrations of 0, 25, 50 and 75 wppm and indicated that there was no appreciable degradation of the polymer. Extensive turbulence intensity data were obtained which were contradictory but indicated that the conical type probe is better than the cylindrical type for turbulence measurements and that the …

The investigation involved the study of modern mobile homes and mobile home parks, mobile home dwellers, and the social and economic aspects of mobile home living. It was suggested that a properly designed and managed mobile home park can provide a satisfactory location for the placement of mobile homes. The small down payment and low monthly payments associated with purchasing a mobile home, along with the inherent mobility of mobile home …

The Analysis Of R-S-S-R Spatial Four-Bar Mechanism, David Perng Chyi Jan 1969

The Analysis Of R-S-S-R Spatial Four-Bar Mechanism, David Perng Chyi

Masters Theses

"Although many methods are known for the kinematic analysis of spatial mechanisms, such as descriptive geometry, vector analysis, dual number theory, matrices, screw calculus, and various other methods, a better way to analyze the specific R-S-S-R four-bar mechanism is to use tensor methods in order to eliminate the apparently formidable and tedious tasks of mathematically formulating problems and obtaining solutions. The analysis described in this paper is developed basically by using tensor notations and operations, and the calculations take advantage of the capabilities of modern digital computers. A FORTRAN program for the IBM 360 Data Processing System which will analyze …

The Long Term Effects Of Frequent Cropping, Stanley Thomas Smith

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

AGRICULTURALLY speaking, few Western Australian soils are more than 50 years old. We have the responsibility of preserving them for farming—not for one man's lifetime, but for centuries.

The aim of this article is to demonstrate that cropping and cultural practices do have some effects on the soil, and that these effects should be considered when choosing a farm rotation.

An Aggregate Quality Investigation Of The Meramec River Gravels, Kadri Ercin Kasapoglu Jan 1969

An Aggregate Quality Investigation Of The Meramec River Gravels, Kadri Ercin Kasapoglu

Masters Theses

"This thesis represents a study which was made to evaluate and interpret the downstream variations in the quality of the Meramec River gravels as coarse aggregate for concrete. Since gravel deposits constitute a valuable resource for a region, it is desirable that extent and quality variations of these deposits are known. It was hoped that an evaluation of certain properties of the Meramec River gravels would assist in determining the value of the Meramec River as undeveloped aggregate source by indicating the relative quality of the gravels from alternate sites of the river. For the purpose of this investigation, representative …

Mass And Heat Transfer Relations In Evaporation Through Porous Membranes, Marshall E. Findley, V. V. Tanna, Y. B. Rao, C. L. Yeh Jan 1969

Mass And Heat Transfer Relations In Evaporation Through Porous Membranes, Marshall E. Findley, V. V. Tanna, Y. B. Rao, C. L. Yeh

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study concerns rates of evaporation and mass transfer of water vapor from a heated salt solution through a water repellent porous membrane to a cooled water condensate. This transfer is a result of temperature differences and corresponding vapor pressure differences across the membrane. Three groups of experiments were carried out which indicate that the major factor influencing the rates of transfer is diffusion through a stagnant gas in the membrane pores. However, an equation considering film heat transfer coefficients, membrane thermal conductivity, and an empirical correction based on temperature driving force appears to be necessary for representing all the …

Structure Of Shock Waves With Nonequilibrium Radiation And Ionization, Harlan F. Nelson, R. Goulard Jan 1969

Structure Of Shock Waves With Nonequilibrium Radiation And Ionization, Harlan F. Nelson, R. Goulard

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The investigations of this study are concerned with: (1) the physical processes that occur in the precursor and in the nonequilibrium region behind a strong shock wave during its approach to equilibrium in an argon like gas; (2) the influence of different atom-atom collisional rates in the relaxation region on the precursor; and (3) the cause of precursor ionization, which in this study has been assumed to be the photoionization of both the ground and excited states. The argon like gas is regarded as a combination of two gases: one consisting of electrons and the other of atoms and ions. …

Methods For Evaluating The Performance Of Small Acoustic Filters, William S. Gatley, Raymond Cohen Jan 1969

Methods For Evaluating The Performance Of Small Acoustic Filters, William S. Gatley, Raymond Cohen

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Experimental methods are needed for determining the characteristics of small acoustic filters used in systems with pulsating gas flows. These characteristics could then be used to predict the performance of proposed filter designs in a particular system, according to plane wave acoustic theory. Dependence on trial-and-error experimentation in solving noise control problems would thus be minimized. A literature survey revealed only a few earlier attempts to evaluate the acoustic performance of small filters and filter elements. Three methods for determining reflection and transmission factors are described, evaluated, and compared. A method employing a standing wave tube of unique design is …

Cutthroat Flow Measuring Flumes For Flat Gradient Channels, Gaylord V. V. Skogerboe Jan 1969

Cutthroat Flow Measuring Flumes For Flat Gradient Channels, Gaylord V. V. Skogerboe

Reports

The cutthroat flume can operate either as a free or submerged flow structure. Submerged flow calibration curves and free flow equations have been developed. Rectangular cutthroat flume sizes of 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 feet were studied and tested in the laboratory. Trapezoidal cutthroat flumes having zero (or V-shaped), 6-inch, and 12-inch throat widths were calibrated. The value of transition submergence is listed for each of the rectangular and trapezoidal cutthroat flumes. The most obvious advantage of a cutthroat flume is economy, since fabrication is facilitated by a flat bottom and removal of the throat section. Another advantage is …

State Assignments For Non-Normal Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Gary Keith Maki Jan 1969

State Assignments For Non-Normal Asynchronous Sequential Circuits, Gary Keith Maki

Masters Theses

"There is a lack of procedures that can be used to find good internal state assignments for asynchronous sequential circuits operating in the non-normal mode. Presented here, are two generalized state assignments, which are functions only of the number of rows in a flow table. The suggested bounds for the generalized state assignments are m + [log₂m] and m + [m/2] internal state variables for a 2m-row flow table, where [ ] means "next lowest integer". Both generalized state assignments produce group (linear) codes. The algorithms for generating these internal state assignments are easy and straight-forward to implement. …

A Study Of The Correlation Potential Of The Optimum Moisture Content, Maximum Dry Density, And Consolidated Drained Shear Strength Of Plastic Fine-Grained Soils With Index Properties, Marvin Tartt Harris Jan 1969

A Study Of The Correlation Potential Of The Optimum Moisture Content, Maximum Dry Density, And Consolidated Drained Shear Strength Of Plastic Fine-Grained Soils With Index Properties, Marvin Tartt Harris

Masters Theses

"The correlation potential of the compaction properties and the consolidated drained shear strength parameters of plastic fine-grained soils with index properties was investigated in this study. The interrelationships of these properties were derived through graphical and multilinear regression analysis. The compaction properties, optimum moisture content, and maximum dry density were found to be related to many of the index properties. The most important relationships were with the plasticity indices and the percentage of particles smaller than two microns; the highest degree of simple correlation was achieved with the liquid limit. The consolidated drained shear parameters, cohesion, and the angle of …

The Iron-Holmium Binary System And Related Magnetic Properties, Gerald J. Roe Jan 1969

The Iron-Holmium Binary System And Related Magnetic Properties, Gerald J. Roe

Doctoral Dissertations

"The iron-holmium phase diagram was investigated to determine the alloying behavior of these two metals and to determine the magnetic properties of some of the iron-holmium alloys which formed intermediate phases. The iron-holmium binary system was determined by three experimental techniques, differential thermal analysis (DTA), x-ray diffraction, and metallography. A phase diagram with three eutectic points and four intermediate phases was constructed from the experimental data. The two phases, Ho₆Fe₂₃ and Ho₂Fe₁₇, melted congruently at 1322⁰C and 1343⁰C respectively. HoFe₂ and HoFe₃ melted incongruently at 1288⁰C and 1293⁰C respectively. Neutron diffraction investigations were made on the intermediate phases Ho₆Fe₂₃ and …

Improvement In Target Detection With A Frequency Agile Pulsed Non-Coherent Radar, Kenneth Lee Horn Jan 1969

Improvement In Target Detection With A Frequency Agile Pulsed Non-Coherent Radar, Kenneth Lee Horn

Doctoral Dissertations

"Frequency agile tracking radars have received considerable attention in the literature. Frequency agility is useful in reducing target scintillations, thereby reducing tracking errors under certain conditions. However, little attention has been devoted to the improvement that can be expected in target detection with a frequency agile radar. In the past, complete pulse-to-pulse decorrelation of the target returns has been assumed for all of the analyses concerning target detection with frequency agile radars. This assumption always implies a transmitter with a large bandwidth.

This dissertation analyses a pulsed non-coherent frequency agile radar applied to Swerling's Case I target. The target model …
