A Comparison Of Computer Codes For Fast Neutron Dosimetry By The Foil Technique, Jau Wen Chen Jan 1971

A Comparison Of Computer Codes For Fast Neutron Dosimetry By The Foil Technique, Jau Wen Chen

Masters Theses

"A comparison of the major codes currently used for fast neutron dosimetry based on the foil technique has been made. These codes are SAND II, SPECTRA and RDMM. The comparison is based upon the deviation of calculated from-measured activities, the input data decks, the obtained information, and the computer time required. Four sets of data were used to be compared upon the above four viewpoints, the conclusion reached is that the SPECTRA computer code is the most satisfactory for the UMR Reactor fast neutron spectrum"--Abstract, page ii.

"This thesis describes the design and the laboratory implementation of a hybrid phase-lock loopage The step-by-step procedure followed in developing this experimental hybrid phase-lock loop, and its optimization with respect to various parameters are given. In regard to the performance characteristics, the loop was used to obtain the phase estimate of a split-phase modulated signal. The phase error probability density function was measured under various input noise conditions and these results are included and compared with previously published theoretical results"--Abstract, page ii.

Design And Preliminary Testing Of A Thermomechanical Rock Fragmentation Apparatus, Gary Earl Fenton Jan 1971

Design And Preliminary Testing Of A Thermomechanical Rock Fragmentation Apparatus, Gary Earl Fenton

Masters Theses

"The design characteristics of equipment to thermally weaken and mechanically fragment hard rock were developed and the apparatus constructed. An initial investigation of thermo-mechanical fragmentation was conducted on Missouri red granite. The particles from the fragmentation tests were sized and this analysis was used in the Rittinger theory to calculate surface area breakage energy. It was found that the application of thermal energy could reduce the surface area breakage energy per unit volume of material removed by as much as 41 percent. The use of kerfs in the rock increased the amount of material removed and permitted larger particles to …

The Pm3m-Fm3m Transformation And Phase Equilibrium In Solid Solutions Of Csc1 With Kc1, Rbc1, And Csbr, John David Weyand Jan 1971

The Pm3m-Fm3m Transformation And Phase Equilibrium In Solid Solutions Of Csc1 With Kc1, Rbc1, And Csbr, John David Weyand

Masters Theses

"Thermal expansion and the Pm3m t Fm3m transition of cesium chloride have been studied with high temperature diffractometry, differential thermal analysis, and heating and quenching techniques. The onset temperature of the transition in pure CsCl, on heating, is 471ºC. There are no observable premonitory effects below the transition temperature and no apparent structural relationships between the polymorphs is apparent. Both phases coexist over a 20º to 50ºC temperature range and equilibrium thermal hysteresis occurs on heating and cooling. Hysteresis behavior is explained by addition of strain energy parameters to the free energy function. Initiation of the Pm3m t Fm3m transformation …

Transient Hydraulic Simulation: Breached Earth Dams, D. L. Fread Jan 1971

Transient Hydraulic Simulation: Breached Earth Dams, D. L. Fread

Doctoral Dissertations

"A conceptual method to alleviate flood damages due to over-topping failures of small earthfill dams is the incorporation of a relatively thin erosion retarding layer within the dam. This paper investigates the reduction in the reservoir release due to the hypothetical erosion retarding layer. In addition, the paper provides a method for the determination of an optimal location of the layer so as to minimize the maximum possible reservoir release due to a gradually breached earth dam. The transient reservoir flow is simulated by a numerical model, based upon the solution of the one-dimensional St. Venant unsteady open-channel flow equations. …

X-Ray And Neutron Diffraction Study Of The Holmium-Iron System, Michael Fred Simmons Jan 1971

X-Ray And Neutron Diffraction Study Of The Holmium-Iron System, Michael Fred Simmons

Doctoral Dissertations

"Neutron diffraction and x-ray powder studies have been made of holmium-iron intermetallic compounds. The magnetic moments of Ho and Fe are in good agreement with measured spontaneous magnetization assuming a ferrimagnetic model with the Ho moments antiparallel to the Fe moments. The magnetic moments of the Fe atoms are found to be localized and thus independent of the rare earth content in the alloys. In contrast to HoCo₃, (00ℓ) type magnetic peaks in the neutron diffraction patterns are still prevalent at room temperature and gradually decrease as the Curie temperature is approached. This fact indicates that the easy direction of …

The Axial Contact Of Finite Elastic Cylinders With Application To Thermal Contact Resistance, Ross Orlo Mcnary Jan 1971

The Axial Contact Of Finite Elastic Cylinders With Application To Thermal Contact Resistance, Ross Orlo Mcnary

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Predictions of the macroscopic thermal contact resistance have been severely restricted because the macroscopic contact area between finite members could not be determined. A new method of solution to this contact problem in elasticity is developed which is applicable to a wide variety of geometries and boundary conditions. A physical lumped-parameter model is employed from which the finite difference equations in terms of displacement are derived. Calculations using this method indicate that large errors in the prediction of the thermal contact resistance can result if solutions for bodies of infinite extent are employed for finite regions of interest. Especially large …

Activation Volumes Of Interstitial Diffusion In Ferromagnetic Metals And Alloys, Manfred Wuttig, J. Keiser Jan 1971

Activation Volumes Of Interstitial Diffusion In Ferromagnetic Metals And Alloys, Manfred Wuttig, J. Keiser

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Dis accommodation technique was used to determine the activation volumes of carbon diffusion ΔV of a Fe-1.4 wt% Si alloy, of hcp cobalt, and of nickel at the temperatures of -21, 75, and 110°C, respectively. The obtained values of ΔV are +0.3 ± 0.3 and -0.6 ± 0.9 cm3 mole-1 for the two relaxations observed in hcp cobalt, and 1.2 ± 0.1 cm3 mole-1 for nickel. These results are discussed in terms of a continuum model that interprets the activation energy of diffusion as a sum of the strain and exchange energies. It is found that in ferromagnetic solids …

Preparation Of Metallic Oxide Aerosols By Vaporization And Degradation Of Organic Compounds, Tom B. Larsen Jan 1971

Preparation Of Metallic Oxide Aerosols By Vaporization And Degradation Of Organic Compounds, Tom B. Larsen

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

Simple, dependable methods for the generation of aerosols are necessary to many forms of research. Specifically inhalation research has a requirement for sub-micron sized insoluble particles.

Two different methods for the production of oxide aerosols from vaporizable compounds were tried. The first method, a modification of the Rapaport-Weinstock generator (R3), consisted of nebulization of a solution into a droplet mist. Next the droplets were vaporized, and condensation nuclei formed from the nonvaporizable impurities in the solution. The vapor was allowed to condense on the nuclei in a relatively large chamber, then the resulting liquid droplet aerosol was dried and converted …

An Experimental Study On Heat Transfer Coefficient For Carbon Laden Gas, Jacob Chi-Kwong Huang Jan 1971

An Experimental Study On Heat Transfer Coefficient For Carbon Laden Gas, Jacob Chi-Kwong Huang

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

Abstract

A complete carbon black pilot plant was employed in this study. Carbon laden gas was produced in a furnace and introduced into the outer pipe of a heat exchanger. Air, at the same time, was introduced into

the inner pipe of the heat exchanger cocurrently with the carbon laden gas. Thus, heat, with temperature difference as driving force, would transfer from the carbon laden gas to the air stream. The temperatures along the two streams were measured by iron-constantan thermal couples and recorded by a multi-reading temperature

recorder. Air supply and fuel (C3H8) supply were introduced into the furnace …

Empirical Bayesian Learning, David R. Cunningham, Arthur M. Breipohl Jan 1971

Empirical Bayesian Learning, David R. Cunningham, Arthur M. Breipohl

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

It is shown that a certain weighted average of the prior distribution and the empirical distribution yields an estimate of the posterior distribution that is consistent with Bayes' theorem. Acomparison of this approach and conventional parametric Bayesian estimation is made for some specific cases. Copyright © 1971 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.
