Ecological Implications Of Dimethyl Mercury In An Aquatic Food Chain, Lawrence P. Kolb, Donald B. Porcella, E. Joe Middlebrooks

Reports

Laboratory studies indicate dimethyl mercury may be a major product of microbial methylation of inorganic mercury. Although another methylation product, monomethyl mercury, has been extensively studied, the physical, chemical, and biologicl factors affecting the transport and food chain distribution of dimethyl mercury have remained unclear. This report presents results of laboratory studies of volatilization rates from water as a function of temperature and mixing conditions, uptake kinetics and equilibrium concentrations in algae,

Sorption Kinetics Part I: A Laboratory Investigation Of Six Proposed Rate Laws Using Batch Reactors, David W. Hendricks, Laxman G. Kuratti Jan 1973

Sorption Kinetics Part I: A Laboratory Investigation Of Six Proposed Rate Laws Using Batch Reactors, David W. Hendricks, Laxman G. Kuratti

Reports

Six proposed rate equations for sorption kinetics have been investigated by laboratory batch experiments involving some 270 individual “runs” to determine sorption uptake with time for varying conditions of initial sorbate concentration, temperature, and sorbent species. The sorbate selected was rhodamine-B dye, used because it will sorb readily and is easily measured. Two sorbents, Dowex 50 resin, and Filtrasorb 200 activated carbon were used. Temperature conditions were 10, 20, 30, and 40°C, and concentrations ranged from .0008 to 400 micrograms per ml, rhodamine-B. Analysis of data was computer automated, requiring as input only test conditions, instrument readings, dilutions, and corresponding …

The Economic Efficiency Of Inter-Basin Agricultural Water Transfers In Utah: A Mathematical Programming Approach, John E. Keith, Jay C. Andersen, Calvin G. Clyde Jan 1973

The Economic Efficiency Of Inter-Basin Agricultural Water Transfers In Utah: A Mathematical Programming Approach, John E. Keith, Jay C. Andersen, Calvin G. Clyde

Reports

The economic efficiency of water development in Utah, including transfer systems, has seldom been examined, not has the costs of public policies which result in deviations from efficient allocations. In order that public officials be better informed about water allocations, the present effort examines the efficient allocation of water in time frames up to 2020 under several alternative assumtions and calculates that cost of alternative policies. Using mathematical programming techniques, a computer model is developed to determine the supply (marginal cost) and demand (value or marginal product) relationships for agricultural water, given depletions for municipal and industrial (M&I) and wetland …

Integrated Measurement Of Soil Moisture By Use Of Radio Waves, Duane G. Chadwick Jan 1973

Integrated Measurement Of Soil Moisture By Use Of Radio Waves, Duane G. Chadwick

Reports

An integrated value of soil moisture can be determine dby measuring the attenuation of vertically-polarized surface radio waves taht are propagated over the ground between a transmitting and receiving atenna. Soil moisture values in the root-zone region were measured over longitudinal distances typically ranging from 50 feet to 600 feet with good results. Integrated soil moisture measurements over greater distances are also possible. Received field strength of propaged radio surface waves closely matches theoretical calculations. The measurement is easily made and does not disturb the soil. Dense, green vegetation, such as alfalfa or corn, causes errors in measurement accuracy. Less …

Social, Economic, Environmental, And Technical Factors Influencing Water Reuse, A. Bruce Bishop, Suravuth Pratishthananda, John Keith, Craig Colton, A. Berry Crawford Jan 1973

Social, Economic, Environmental, And Technical Factors Influencing Water Reuse, A. Bruce Bishop, Suravuth Pratishthananda, John Keith, Craig Colton, A. Berry Crawford

Reports

A growing population together with rising per capita income has resulted in increased demand for water for virtually all uses. At the same time there has been increased public concern for maintaining the quality of streams for recreation, sight-seeing, and other social uses, and to conserve environmental values. A partial answer to these conflicts in water use and management is more extensive waste water reclamation and reuse. Heretofore, water salvage and reuse has been mainly practiced in specific operational cases, such as recycling industrial process water, or on an ad hoc basis, such as a series of diversions and subsequent …

The Demand For Agricultural Water In Utah, Mark H. Anderson, Jay C. Andersen, John E. Keith, Calvin G. Clyde

Reports

Water is recognized as an essential element in Utah's agricultural economy. It is the subject of much controvery and litigation and yet most discussion of the subject is based on opinions and prejudice rather than upon the basis of sound scientific evidence. This paper attempts to provide some of the economic information necessary for sound decisions in the development and use of Utah's water resources with respect to agriculture. Utah has been divided into ten drainage regions (hydrologi subregions) and the presently irrigated and potentially irrigable land according to land class were estimated for each country or portion of a …

Solving Three-Dimensional Potential Flow Problems By Means Of An Inverse Formulation And Finite Differences, Allen L. Davis, Roland W. Jeppson Jan 1973

Solving Three-Dimensional Potential Flow Problems By Means Of An Inverse Formulation And Finite Differences, Allen L. Davis, Roland W. Jeppson

Reports

A finite difference method is developed to solve the three-dimensional, steady, incompressible, potential flow equations obtained by using a potential function, o, and two mutually orthogonal stream functions, u and u*, to describe the flow. Problems are formulated in an inverse space where the potential function and the two stream functions are the independent variables, and the Cartesian coordinates x, y, and z are the dependent variables. The boundaries of the problem in the physical space, including the free surface, have known positions in the inverse space, so trial and error adjustments to the positions of the boundaries are unnecessary. …

The structures of the resulting polymers were dependent upon the reaction conditions employed, those formed at high temperature being highly condensed materials. © 1973.

Nonlinear Optimum Design Of Dynamic Damped Structures, Mark E. Botkin Jan 1973

Nonlinear Optimum Design Of Dynamic Damped Structures, Mark E. Botkin

Doctoral Dissertations

"A method to optimize the weight of plane frames subjected to dynamic loads is presented. Restrictions are imposed upon the maximum dynamic stresses and displacements, desirable section moduli of the constituent members, and the range of values allowed for natural frequencies. Various considerations for rigid frame design include damping, the P-Δ effect, static girder loads, static column loads and girder shears transferred to the columns. A finite difference approach is presented to evaluate the shock spectrum which is used in conjunction with modal superposition to obtain the peak upperbound dynamic displacements and stresses for multistory and multibay frames. The displacement …

Premartensitic Elasticity Of Fe-Ni Invars, Bryce Linn Shriver Jan 1973

Premartensitic Elasticity Of Fe-Ni Invars, Bryce Linn Shriver

Doctoral Dissertations

"The premartensitic temperature dependence of ultrasonic wave propagation in Fe-30 pct Ni polycrystals and Fe-32 pct Ni single crystals was measured by using a continuous wave technique. As the temperature was lowered to within 10°C of the Ms, a nonlinear decrease of the relative shear velocity was observed. This effect is related to dislocation stacking fault instabilities which may trigger the martensitic phase transformation. In addition, the single crystals show a frequency dependence of the shear elastic constant C' well above the Ms. The dispersion is believed to be caused by fluctuations in the anisotropic molecular …

A Digital Simulation Of A Single Articulated Rotor Helicopter, Joseph William Klahs Jr. Jan 1973

A Digital Simulation Of A Single Articulated Rotor Helicopter, Joseph William Klahs Jr.

Masters Theses

"The investigation was concerned with the development of a complete digital computer simulation of a single articulated rotor helicopter. The simulation program was executed on an IBM model 360-50 digital computer.

The main rotor was analyzed by the consideration of a continuous rigid blade at six azimuth stations, while the airframe aerodynamics were treated in the conventional manner. The differential equations of motion of the airframe were solved in a step-wise fashion by approximating time dependent functions with cubic interpolation polynomials.

The study concluded that there was strong evidence that suggested the possibility of treating main rotor flapping as a …

A Study Of The Splash-Plate Tower Concept, A Biological Wastewater Treatment Process, Robert Joseph Millman Jan 1973

A Study Of The Splash-Plate Tower Concept, A Biological Wastewater Treatment Process, Robert Joseph Millman

Masters Theses

"Different modifications and newer methods of treatment which utilize the basic trickling filter concepts, such as the Bio-Disc process, have been developed to increase the efficiency of wastewater treatment. The purpose of this investigation was to develop and evaluate a newer such method called the splash plate concept.

The splash-plate concept utilizes a series of circular plates mounted horizontally on a vertical axis. This allows the wastewater being treated to travel over one plate to the edge and splash down to the next lower plate and so on throughout the tower. A total of four units were operated at different …

On The Complex Index Of Refraction Of Bulk Materials, Carol Jeanne Warren Jan 1973

On The Complex Index Of Refraction Of Bulk Materials, Carol Jeanne Warren

Masters Theses

"As a part of the investigation of classical reflectance, it is determined that the hemispherical reflectance for a material with a particular pair of optical constants can be approximated by computing the angular reflectance at sixty degrees, using Fresnel's generalized reflectance formulas.

Reflection methods for the purpose of determining the optical constants of a variety of materials are discussed. The unpolarized reflectance versus angle of incidence technique is used for determination of the optical constants of bulk solids. Restrictions on the simultaneous solution of the Fresnel equations are determined and a computer program is developed to compute values necessary to …

The Effect Of Porosity On Strength Degradation In Thermally Shocked Alumina, Russell David Smith Jan 1973

The Effect Of Porosity On Strength Degradation In Thermally Shocked Alumina, Russell David Smith

Masters Theses

"Strength degradation and crack propagation in Al2O3 are shown to depend on the initial strength and porosity of the material. Specimens were fabricated containing between 0 and 5% induced cylindrical, two dimensional, and spherical porosity. The strengths of the various porosity samples decreased discontinuously at a critical quenching temperature. No difference was observed in the critical temperature for the various aluminas; initial strength decrease occurred between 165°C and 175°C temperature differential. The strength retained after thermal shock decreased with increasing initial strength. The degree of damage sustained upon shocking was also characterized by crack density and crack …

Nutation Control During Precession Of A Spin-Stabilized Spacecraft, Richard James Donner Jan 1973

Nutation Control During Precession Of A Spin-Stabilized Spacecraft, Richard James Donner

Masters Theses

"The effects of precession thrust pulses and energy dissipation upon nutation of a spin-stabilized spacecraft are studied. Methods for controlling nutation during a precession maneuver are proposed and examined. In particular, a precession modulation control law is developed which uses precession thrust pulses to control nutation. Digital simulations show that precession control with separate nutation control is the fastest precessing system; however, the precession modulation method is only fractionally slower while not requiring a separate nutation control system"--Abstract, page ii.

Parametric Resonance Of A Beam Subjected To A Sawtooth, Axial Force, Alfred George Richardson Jan 1973

Parametric Resonance Of A Beam Subjected To A Sawtooth, Axial Force, Alfred George Richardson

Masters Theses

"This study considers the response of a perfectly elastic straight beam subjected to a periodic, non-harmonic, axial load. A two-mode solution is sought and the effects of axial inertia are included in the analysis. General equations of motion for the beam are developed and their stability is studied with the aid of an analog computer. Results are presented in graphical form. Regions of instability are defined for both modes. A region of combination resonance is also found to occur for the case of a two-mode solution with axial inertia. Typical response curves are presented and the effects of axial inertia …
