Self-Consistent Dielectric Response Of A Quasi-One-Dimensional Metal At High Frequencies, P. F. Williams, Aaron N. Bloch Aug 1974

Self-Consistent Dielectric Response Of A Quasi-One-Dimensional Metal At High Frequencies, P. F. Williams, Aaron N. Bloch

P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications

We present the results of a calculation of the frequency- and wave-vector-dependent longitudinal dielectric function of a quasi-one-dimensional electron gas. The electrons are taken to be localized to the chains and both the tight-binding and free-electron extremes are considered along the chain axis. Local-field effects are included. Dispersion curves for plasmons and single-particle-excitation spectra are presented. We find that the plasmon modes are not Landau damped and that for long wavelengths these modes have eigenfrequencies ranging continuously from the usual three-dimensional plasma frequency for propagation along the chain axis to zero for propagation perpendicular to it. Finally, we discuss the …

Optimal Highway Safety Improvement Investments By Dynamic Programming [Aug. 1974], Jerry G. Pigman, Kenneth R. Agent, Jesse G. Mayes, Charles V. Zegeer

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The process of determining which projects to implement under a given budget, and which to defer until later, is central to the planning and management of highway systems. With a limited budget for construction, maintenance, and safety improvements, investments which will produce the optimal benefits must be chosen. This is often impossible to accomplish without the aid of a computer because of the complexity of the problem. Dynamic programming has been tested and verified as an efficient method for selecting priority projects to derive maximum benefits.

There are several approaches to priority programming as it is related to the capital …

Optical Excitation Of Plasmons In A Quasi-One-Dimensional Conductor, P. F. Williams, M. A. Butler, D. L. Rousseau Aug 1974

Optical Excitation Of Plasmons In A Quasi-One-Dimensional Conductor, P. F. Williams, M. A. Butler, D. L. Rousseau

P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications

We have carefully determined the optical spectrum of K2Pt(CN) 4Br0.3 - 3H2O near the reflectivity edge. Our data reveal, in addition to the expected monotonic background, a broad peak in ε2 (ω) above a threshold coinciding with the zero of ε1 (ω) near 16000 cm-1. We assign this band to indirect excitation of plasmons. Details of the excitation of plasmons are discussed with particular attention being paid to the problems presented by the one-dimensional character of the material. It is concluded that the electronic structure of this material cannot be …

An Automatic Rinse Tank Controller For Industrial Applications, Aliasghar Emami

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis describes an automatic Rinse Tank Control System used in detection and removal of contaminating agents from industrial plating rinse tanks. It automatically monitors the purity of the rinse water in sixteen separate rinse tanks, and permits fresh water to enter the tanks only when the conductivity of the rinse water in each tank exceeds a predetermined level. Its use will result in large savings in consumption of fresh water and the subsequent reduction in discharge of effluent to the treatment plants.

Analytical State Assignment For Synchronous Sequential Machines., Min-Hung Chao

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

An algorithm is proposed that solves the internal state assignment, input state assignment, and output circuit simplification problems of synchronous sequential machines. With few modifications, it can be applied to machines using various type of memory elements and is capable of solving the state assignment problems of large sequential machines.

The algorithm is first presented in a form for use on machines realized with D-type flip-flops; it is then generalized so that it can be applied to machines using trigger, S-R, or J-K flip-flops directly.

The features of merit in a state table that could be used to obtain internal …

Temperature Distributions In Asphaltic Concrete Pavements, Herbert F. Southgate Jul 1974

Temperature Distributions In Asphaltic Concrete Pavements, Herbert F. Southgate

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The straight-line relationship between temperatures at a given depth and the surface temperatures combined with 5-day average air temperatures appears to be as valid for upper New York State and Arizona as it was for Maryland. The main differences were in the ranges and mean temperatures. Values given herein are for straight-line equations for all 24 hours and for the depths of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 inches (5.1, 10.2, 15.2, 20.3, 25.4, and 30.5 cm). The original concept appears to be valid and may be used with confidence for estimating pavement temperatures at other latitudes and longitudes.

A Biquadratic Realization Using A Distributed-Lumped-Active Rc Network., James Lee Jorgensen Jul 1974

A Biquadratic Realization Using A Distributed-Lumped-Active Rc Network., James Lee Jorgensen

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

A common method used to realize high-order active filters is to cascade second-order (biquadratic) and first-order filter sections, to achieve the desired voltage transfer function. First-order sections are easily realized by simple passive sections; the basic building block in this method is, therefore, a network that realizes a general biquadratic voltage transfer function (BVTF).

Water Salvage Potentials In Utah, Volume I. Open Water Evaporation And Monolayer Suppression Potential, Trevor C. Hughes, E. Arlo Richardson, James A. Franckiewicz Jul 1974

Water Salvage Potentials In Utah, Volume I. Open Water Evaporation And Monolayer Suppression Potential, Trevor C. Hughes, E. Arlo Richardson, James A. Franckiewicz

Reports

An estimate of the potential in Utah for evaporation suppression by the monolayer film method is presented. The model estimates evaporation suppression as a function of wind speed, a four parameter exposure factor, and reservoir size. The estimated suppression factors vary from 0 to 30 percent and average 11 percent of the statewide total annual evaporation. Estimates of May to October evaporation and suppression potential are calculated for each of the 227 impoundments in the surface water inventory. A forthcoming report in this series will examine the potential for evaporation suppression by thermal destratification. This procedure, which is already being …

The Effect Of Unreinforced Cutouts On The Buckling Of Thin Conical Shells Loaded By Central Axial Compression, Garla Arjuna Jul 1974

The Effect Of Unreinforced Cutouts On The Buckling Of Thin Conical Shells Loaded By Central Axial Compression, Garla Arjuna

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Analytical trends for the linear bifurcation buckling of thin isotropic right-circular-conical shells with unreinforced cutouts are investigated. Clamped, constant-thickness conical shells with homogeneous, isotropical material properties are analyzed for uniform axial compression. The buck ling loads are obtained by the use of the STAGS (Structural Analysis of General Shells) computer program which is based on a finite difference numerical approach. Variables defining the geometry of the cutout and the cone are nondimensionalized and the relationship between the nondimensional buckling load and nondimensional cutout parameter is established. A range of the cutout sizes is investigated for which linear bifurcation buckling results …

Dynamics Of Explosion Remnants In Earth-Orbits, Joseph T. Fuss Jul 1974

Dynamics Of Explosion Remnants In Earth-Orbits, Joseph T. Fuss

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Explosions in space produce particles that are hazardous to space vehicles. Some of these particles are not trackable and their locations must be predicted by dynamical methods.

This investigation sheds light on three different, areas, First, ignoring perturbations, the characteristics of a three dimensional envelope outlined by the sum of individual particle orbits is determined, Second, the distribution of the particles is found as a function of time, Finally, the movement, of the body via secular perturbations is investigated. Magnitudes of the explosion, the point of. detonation in the parent satellite's orbit, and the radius of perigee of the parent …

Application Of Boundary Layer Theory To Suction Through Streamwise Slots In Wind Tunnel Walls, Michael Harold Berger Jul 1974

Application Of Boundary Layer Theory To Suction Through Streamwise Slots In Wind Tunnel Walls, Michael Harold Berger

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A theoretical investigation at Mach 6 and 8 has been conducted on a model of a wind tunnel sound shield. The flat plate model consists of interchangeable circular and wedge shaped longitudinal rods with gaps between the rods for boundary layer removal. One dimensional gas dynamics results have been applied to model the pressure distribution for the array of cylinders. Comparisons with experimental pressure distributions and numerical potential flow solutions indicate good agreement. It has been demonstrated that stagnation line heat transfer can be accurately predicted for laminar and-turbulent flow for circular cylinders. The flow around the wedge rods was …

Design Of I-Shaped Beams And Columns With Diaphragm Bracing, S. J. Errera, T. V. S. R. Apparao Jul 1974

Design Of I-Shaped Beams And Columns With Diaphragm Bracing, S. J. Errera, T. V. S. R. Apparao

CCFSS Library (1939 - present)

Cold-formed steel panels often are used as wall sheathing, roof decking or floor decking in steel framed buildings or pre-engineered metal buildings. Diaphragms formed by interconnecting these panels have considerable in-plane shear resistance, and can be utilized as bracing against buckling for individual members of a steel frame. For wall columns the diaphragm may be either directly attached or connected to girts which in turn are connected to the columns. A procedure is presented for the design of I-section beams and columns with diaphragm or diaphragm-girt bracing. The procedure is based on the ultimate load capacity of fully braced members, …

The Theory Of Multiple Measurements Techniques In Distributed Parameter Systems, Babajimi Claudius Okunseinde Jun 1974

The Theory Of Multiple Measurements Techniques In Distributed Parameter Systems, Babajimi Claudius Okunseinde

Dissertations

A comprehensive theory of multiple measurements for the optimum on-line state estimation and parameter identification in a class of noisy, dynamic distributed systems, is developed in this study. Often in practical monitoring and control problems, accurate measurements of a critical variable are not available in a desired form or at a desired sampling rate. Rather, noisy independent measurements of related forms of the variable may be available at different sampling rates. Multiple measurements theory thus involves the optimum weighting and combination of different types of available measurements. One of the contributions of this work is the development of a unique …

A Study Of An Adiabatic Tubular Reactor For The Multiple Chlorination Of Methane, Richard L. Braun Jun 1974

A Study Of An Adiabatic Tubular Reactor For The Multiple Chlorination Of Methane, Richard L. Braun

Theses

A computer program has been developed which simulates the multiple chlorination of methane in an adiabatic, tubular reactor. Euler's method is used to approximate the solutions of the programs differential equations.

The program is designed to determine the amount of an inert diluent required in the feed stream to attain some specified conversion of methane in a safe and efficient temperature range. Particular emphasis is put on determining the amount of diluent required to attain 98% conversion of methane at an outlet temperature of 723°K. The program also determines the reactor volume necessary to achieve the specified conversion, and the …

The Steady State Heat And Temperature Distribution Of A Hot Sphere Within An Infinite Wedge, David W. Horwat Jun 1974

The Steady State Heat And Temperature Distribution Of A Hot Sphere Within An Infinite Wedge, David W. Horwat

Theses

This thesis presents a mathematical model of the steady state heat and temperature distributions of a hot sphere located along the midplane of an infinitely long wedge of any arbitrary central angle. The heat and temperature distributions of this geometric configuration are of immense value, since through the use of this model as a wedge shaped unit cell the description of any number of hot spheres, arranged in a regular planar array can be immediately determined.

The method of reflections is used to solve Laplace's equation , V2T=O , analytically using the sphere and the wedge walls as …

The Effect Of Dry-Blending High Density Polyethylene On Final Product Properties, Charles H. Klestadt Jun 1974

The Effect Of Dry-Blending High Density Polyethylene On Final Product Properties, Charles H. Klestadt

Theses

The incentives for Dry-Blending Polyethylenes of varying property type may be economic gain, improved product quality, or both. The manufacturers' latest mode of operation involves seeking to meet their customers' needs with a product line made by using one catalyst system and operating at maximum capacity, while varying the fewest possible control parameters. Off-spec materials and on-spec materials not fitting customers' requirements are two prime targets for additional profits with proper dry blending techniques. The approach used in solving the problem involved starting with an existing product line and converting these products into a number of experimental blends. The blends …

Optimal Performance Of Equilibrium Parametric Pumps, Joseph A. Manganaro Jun 1974

Optimal Performance Of Equilibrium Parametric Pumps, Joseph A. Manganaro

Theses

An examination of the conditions required to obtain the optimal performance of semicontinuous and continuous parametric pumps, defined by the achieving of the maximum possible solute free product for a given column height, was undertaken. The model system sodium nitrate ? water on an ion retardation resin adsorbate was employed. Equations defining maximum values of certain important parameters such as the bottom product flow rate and reservoir displacement rate were developed by extending previous theories of parametric pumping. Experimental runs were carried out using parameters whose values were both less than and greater than the maximum values predicted for optimal …

The Determination Of An Optimum Plant Capacity In A Dynamic Economy, Frederick Louis Monesmith Jun 1974

The Determination Of An Optimum Plant Capacity In A Dynamic Economy, Frederick Louis Monesmith

Theses

A. Monte Carlo computer program has been developed in which the optimum plant capacity is determined by comparing calculated profitability criterions for various plant capacities. The estimates for input variables are developed into probability distributions. This data is then used to calculate a probability distribution for a-profitability criterion. In this thesis approximately thirty input variables are developed into beta distributions. Each variable must be estimated with a ninety percent probability estimate, a most likely probability estimate and a ten percent probability estimate. The three level estimates for each variable completely describe the beta distribution. Approximately half of the beta distributions …

Industrialized-Subsidized Housing In The Hackensack Meadowlands, Andrew Carl Gildersleeve Jun 1974

Industrialized-Subsidized Housing In The Hackensack Meadowlands, Andrew Carl Gildersleeve

Theses

New Jersey as well as the rest of the nation is beginning to feel the pinch of what has been termed the housing crisis. The products of the World War II baby-boom are now reaching the age where they require homes of their own, making the demand for good quality low-cost housing very high. At the same time, the demand for good public housing continues to grow and we are learning that our previous efforts in this field have been far from satisfactory.

In the course of this study I have looked into the possibilities of solving a portion of …
